Welcome to Cage Birds!
European Goldfinches courtesy of Daniel Maldonado What is a bird?
Birds are defined as homeothermic (warm-blooded) vertebrates with two pairs of limbs based on a pentadactyl pattern. The front limbs are modified to form wings. The body is covered by feathers except over the legs and feet, where reptilian type scales exist, and over the face which is often ornamental skin. What is a bird? Birds are my companions and my friends. I wake to their songs and their chattering each morning and many days they give me the strength and the reason to get out of bed and carry on with my day. They have taught me about love and bonding and have taught me how to play again. Birds, whether my own companion birds, or the hummingbirds I see outside my window, allow me to communicate with other peopleand make new friends in a way I could not do before.

Plant Gene Register
Summary: The Plant Gene Register is a "...medium through which to publish information about plant genes," a service of the American Society of Plant Physiologists (ASPP), an organization "...founded...to promote the development of plant physiology, encourage and publish research in plant physiology, and to promote the interest and growth of plant science in general." This site serves as an index to the Plant Gene Register and its contents. At the top of the site's main page are links to the homepage of the ASPP, to the creator's of the site, to the ASPP publication, Plant Physiology , and to instructions for submissions to the Electronic Plant Gene Register. Three main search methods are constructed in the main page: (1) a full text search of all the Plant Gene Register's articles; (2) searching the plant gene register listings for 1995; and (3) searching the listings for 1996. Below these three links are the present listings for the 1997 register. Users who select the first search method must submit a keyword into the provided field. A list of matching entries is then produced; users should select an individual title to view its full record. The second and third search methods yield register records for the years 1995 and 1996, respectively. In both cases, users will find an intitial listing of entries. Articles are designated here with : (1) a Plant Gene Register code number; (2) author; (3) title; and (4) accession number. Selecting the code number of choice reveals the paper's complete record: (1) title; (2) author; (3) contact information for the author (business address, email, and fax information); (4) content of the article (in its entirety); (5) acknowledgements; and (6) bibliography. This same format is found in all papers listed in the holdings of the 1997 register.

  • 18 done - about 1682 to go... An unusual tree on this page for this update. There are about 41 indigenous species of cycads in southern Africa and about 18 of them are classified as trees. They are divided into two families - 40 of the species belongs to the Encephalartos family and one to the Stangeria family. I`ve promised some people that I`ll have the Marula tree or Sclerocarya birrea subsp. africana in this update but I have only recently got hold of some fruit and seed. This tree will be listed in the next update. If you haven`t smelled a ripe Marula fruit you haven`t smelled the bushveld! The trees added in this update is Gardenia volkensii subsp. spatulifolia or Bushveld gardenia and Buddleja saligna or False olive . Both of these are excelent garden subjects.

http://www15.brinkster.com/nswcps/
Welcome to the Carnivorous Plant Society of New South Wales home page !
The Carnivorous Plant Society of New South Wales is a non-profit organisation formed in June 1985 to promote the cultivation, conservation and knowledge about carnivorous plants. Carnivorous plants are found throughout the world, from the tropics to the arctic region.  You will even find several species of Drosera and Utricularia growing in and around Sydney.  Hence there are carnivorous plants to suit all climates and everyone should be able to grow  at least one if not many different types of carnivorous plants.  Contrary to popular belief most carnivorous plants, given the right conditions, are not difficult to grow. The Society boasts a vibrant and energetic membership dedicated to growing carnivorous plants, learning about carnivorous plants and sharing this knowledge with others. The Society aims to increase the availability of plants and seed, through the Society's Seed Bank, trade of plants at meetings, regular swap meets and free space on this web-page to members wanting to buy, swap or sell plants.

    Container Gardening
Since earliest times, people have needed and enjoyed plants. Where the climate was unfavorable, or the soil or water was scarce, containers made it possible to satisfy that desire. Container gardening is ideal when space is limited. It is a technique which permits plant materials to be moved around easily, to be changed or renewed as desired and to be enjoyed at close range. Plantings can be as simple or as elaborate as space, inclination, taste and funds permit. By its exposure, the container garden site will dictate grow successfully and how to arrange the plants. Since strong winds and sun may present problems, here are some suggestions on how to correct the situation:
    • Construct baffles or screens of opaque plastic or fiberglass to reduce light intensity.
    • Construct a screen, either of louvers or lattice, or a trellis on which to grow appropriate vines to reduce light and wind.
Container Selection Having decided where to place the plants, consider the selection of containers. Many kinds are availableordinary clay pots, wooden boxes, barrels, tubs, and metal and plastic. All should have drainage holes in the bottom. Old kettles, jugs and crocks make interesting containers, and boxes built in various sizes can be stacked in intriguing combinations. It is a good idea to treat wooden objects with a preservative such as copper naphthenate.
