Considering its size the UAE has a wide variety of natural habitats and for our chapter on plants in this general wildlife book we shall take a look at communities within these habitats, rather than present a taxonomic treatise or flora , a task better left to the professionals. As we undertake this floristic escapade, briefly exploring their plants within different communities, I shall guide you, not as a trained botanist, but rather as an enthusiastic plant collector and observer. In nearly thirteen years of enjoying the deserts of the UAE, I have been amazed at the diversity of its plant life and the wonderful adaptations that have evolved to cope with the harsh living conditions.
On a four-hour drive along the western coast going from south to north, you will see the saline sabkha flats of Abu Dhabi turn into sandy plains dotted with halophyte vegetation like Salsola imbricata and Zygophyllum mandavillei with a few stunted Tamarix . All these halophytic plants have their methods of dealing with the high levels of salt in the soil. The tamarix excretes the salt on its needlelike leaves whilst the succulents store it in the fluids of their globular leaves. In sheltered lagoons along much of the Gulf coast mangroves ( Avicennia marina ) are home to many species of birds and fishes.

General Information and Links to Echinacea Websites
Links updated September 14th, 2001 The Flower with Power Although very popular in the last few years, the potential of echinacea as the truly beneficial herb it really is, has yet to be fully understood by most. For several generations, Native Americans knew of the power of this plant and other herbs in treating or preventing many different ailments. Commonly know as the coneflower, echinacea can be found growing as a wildflower mostly in the prairies, the midwest states and as far south as Texas. Today this flower is not only an ornamental in many gardens, but also a cultivated herb with it's beautiful flowing rows of purplish blossoms. Of the several varieties of echinacea the three most popular are purpurea, angustifolia and pallida. They are harvested for their roots, flowerheads, seeds, or juice of the whole plant and can then be made into capsules, extracts, tinctures and tea. Other species are probably just as effective medicinally but little research has been done on them. Echinacea is best known for its' immune enhancing ability, but has proven very effective in many other areas as well. To find out more detailed information on echinacea, visit the sites listed below. Just keep in mind that you need to do your research carefully. Whether you plan to use echinacea or grow it read as much as you can before coming to your own conclusions.

    http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/chromista/chromista.html
    Introduction to the Chromista
From microbes to giants. . .
It may seem hard to believe that microscopic diatoms , with their delicate silica skeletons only forty millionths of a meter long, can be related to the giant kelps , which may grow as long as fifty meters, or that either one is related to the downy mildew that nearly destroyed the French wine industry. But they are related placed together in the great kingdom-level taxon Chromista. The name Chromista means "colored", and although some chromists, like mildews, are colorless, most are photosynthetic. Even though they are photosynthetic, chromists are not at all closely related to plants, or even to other algae. Unlike plants, the Chromista have chlorophyll c , and do not store their energy in the form of starch. Also, photosynthetic chromists often carry various pigments in addition to chlorophyll, which are not found in plants. It is these pigments which give them their characteristic brown or golden color. Photosynthetic chromists are some of the most important organisms in aquatic ecosystems. The cool and temperate coasts of continents are lined with kelp forests , where many commercially important fish and shellfish feed and reproduce, and diatoms are frequently the primary source of food for both marine and fresh-water organisms.

You can locate a distributor of this valve in your area by calling the ARO company. Even if you cannot locate this exact valve, your local dealer might be able to suggest an equivalent substitute of a different brand. Diversity in size and structure.
Among the gymnosperms are plants with stems that may barely project above the ground and others that develop into the largest of trees. Cycads resemble palm trees, with fleshy stems and leathery, featherlike leaves. The tallest cycads reach 19 metres (62 feet). Zamia pygmaea, a cycad native to Cuba, has a trunk less than 10 centimetres (four inches) in height. Of the gnetophytes, Ephedra (joint fir) is a shrub and some species of Gnetum are vines, while the unusual
