Plants Poisonous to Livestock in
Newfoundland and Labrador Publication AP048
July 20, 2000 Introduction
There are many plants in Newfoundland and Labrador that are toxic to farm animals. The cost to our agricultural industry of animals poisoned by these plants is significant. Poisoned animals may die or become sick enough that their profitability is decreased. Every year much effort is expended in treatments of these animals and attempts to rid pastures of the poisonous plants. This factsheet is the first in a series on poisonous plants in this province. Further factsheets in this series will deal with the specifics of the more common poisonous plants.
General Considerations
The folk wisdom that animals somehow know what is safe to eat has been shown to be false by the many farm animals that are poisoned every year. Many ornamental house plants are dangerous but wild weeds, garden flowers and vegetables are the major concerns for farm animals.
The effects of poisonous plants are determined largely by the amount of plant ingested. Animals that are very hungry or moved suddenly onto a pasture filled with harmful plants will tend to eat large amounts. Other factors such as the species of livestock, their age, size, nutritional status and health will be important in determining how sick the animal becomes.

Are poinsettias or any other holiday plants poisonous?
Expert:
Martin Simenc, P.E., ARM, MBA [See Biography] Question: Are poinsettias or any other holiday plants poisonous? Martin Simenc: Contrary to a stubborn myth that refuses to die, poinsettias are not poisonous to humans. Consuming large amounts of any plant can cause cramping and diarrhea, but no one has ever died or become seriously ill from eating poinsettias. Your pets, however, may have a bad reaction if they munch on these plants, so you'd be wise to keep them out of Fido's range. The plant to really beware of this season is mistletoe. While standing beneath it may earn you the pleasure of a kiss or two, ingesting the stuff will cause severe stomach cramps and diarrhea and can even be fatal. If you decide to hang a sprig over your doorway, make sure it's well secured and won't be knocked to the floor where pets and young children could happen upon it. list of emergency numbers by the phone.

The book jacket states, "In the December 1965 issue of the Florida Medical Journal, Dr. Ray Edwards of Jacksonville summarized 430 cases of plant poisoning that had been reported through the Florida poison control centers in the previous four-year period. Of these, 58% occurred in the home yard and 22% in the neighbor's yard." Dr. Sorrell L. Wolfson wrote, "Julia Morton's book on poisonous plants with the excellent photographs and commentary, will be a valuable source of information for everyone...all the Poison Control Centers in the State of Florida should have a copy of this excellent book." Many popular ornamental plants, the majority of them non-native to Florida, have toxic parts which produce a variety of reactions in humans, from contact dermatitis to death from ingestion. The full-color photographs in Julia Morton's book provide an easy way to recognize the culprits as well as valuable scientific information about their components and effects. Florida residents who don't know a rosary pea from a lucky nut should make this book required reading.

To avoid this situation I would suggest taking time to ask your client about their plans for the
property. This may create an opportunity for you to recommend plant material or at least better locations for certain types of plants that may be harmful to the horses. With established plantings, you can point out dangerous situations where horses are concerned and offer alternatives to the owner.
them becomes heavily compacted from the congregating horses providing little shade in the end.
Trees like Red Maple, Oak, Golden Chain, Black Locust and wild Cherries are potentially very toxic to horses and should be removed if in the pasture or around the fence line. A few resources Bryan has found useful regarding poisonous plants and horses are:

The most frequently overlooked plant-related hazard is actually that posed by heavy pots that could fall on your child.
