Some of these chemicals, like mercury , are known to be highly toxic, even in small amounts. For others, like tungsten , we have very little knowledge of their toxicity.
Some of the substances get into our bodies after being emitted by industrial facilities as pollution; others come from the foods we eat, natural sources, past pollution, or a combination of all three.

The Astronomical Society of Greater Hartford is a club member of the International Dark-Sky Association The members of the Light Pollution Education Committee work hard to raise awareness of the Society members and the general public to inform them about the effects that obtrusive outdoor lighting have on society. Light Pollution affects astronomers more profoundly in one way because it greatly diminishes, if not completely removes the view of deep sky objects in the cosmos, but the Light Pollution affects everyone!
Join! What is Light Pollution? How could light ever pollute something? It disappears as soon as the lamp is turned off and no sticky toxic residue is left in its wake. This cannot be a form of pollution, can it? The answer is yes, light can actually pollute the outdoor environment and wash away the view of stars in the sky. As awareness raises around the world, this term is heard in more and more places. It is a curable problem and can be prevented through the application of well designed and applied outdoor lighting. Light Pollution occurs in the three following forms:
  • It causes an atmospheric phenomenon known as skyglow. Have you ever noticed the clouds overhead glowing an eerie pink, white, or orange color before? This wasted light is known as skyglow. It happens because of poorly designed and improperly aimed light fixtures called luminaires. Luminaires that do not offer adequate shielding usually spill wasted light into the sky and across property lines where it does not benefit anyone. When light spills into the sky, it reflects off of tiny airborne dust and moisture particles. This happens even on very clear evenings, too. The skyglow phenomenon directly affects the scientific research of amateur and professional astronomers. It also affects everyone else who simply enjoys a dark night sky abundant with stars overhead. Skyglow is a curable condition, and we can still have adequate and safe illumination in the outdoor environment.

Increasingly, the nation is coming to understand prevention's value—as an environmental strategy, as a sustainable business practice, as a fundamental principle for all our society. P2 is also a vehicle for "reinventing" traditional Agency programs and devising innovative alternative strategies to protect public health and the environment. It is a key element of new EPA initiatives to focus attention on reducing risks from persistent, bioaccumulative toxic pollutants in the air, in water, and on land; to promote environmental justice and urban environmental quality; to empower state and tribal programs; to lower the incidence of climate change; and to demonstrate the results and benefits of our labors. In addition, EPA is incorporating P2 into programs that encourage environmentally preferable purchasing and corporate eco-efficiency. P2 is a building block for private sector environmental performance and sustainability.

WATER POLLUTION AND SOCIETY By David Krantz and Brad Kifferstein INTRODUCTION Comprising over 70% of the Earth’s surface, water is undoubtedly the most precious natural resource that exists on our planet. Without the seemingly invaluable compound comprised of hydrogen and oxygen, life on Earth would be non-existent: it is essential for everything on our planet to grow and prosper. Although we as humans recognize this fact, we disregard it by polluting our rivers, lakes, and oceans. Subsequently, we are slowly but surely harming our planet to the point where organisms
are dying at a very alarming rate. In addition to innocent organisms dying off, our drinking water has become greatly affected as is our ability to use water for recreational purposes. In order to combat water pollution, we must understand the problems and become part of the solution. POINT AND NONPOINT SOURCES According to the American College Dictionary, pollution is defined as: “to make foul or unclean; dirty.” Water pollution occurs when a body of water is adversely affected due to the addition of large amounts of materials to the water. When it is unfit for its intended use, water is considered polluted. Two types of water pollutants exist; point source and nonpoint source. Point sources of pollution occur when harmful substances are emitted directly into a body of water. The Exxon Valdez oil spill best illustrates a point source water pollution. A nonpoint source delivers pollutants indirectly through environmental changes. An example of this type of water pollution is when fertilizer from a field is carried into a stream by rain, in the form of run-off

It's easy to cut your energy costs for laundry. About 80-85% of the energy used for washing clothes is used to heat the water. You can reduce this cost by using less water by washing full loads and using cooler water and cold-water detergents - switching the temperature setting from hot to warm cuts a load's energy use in half. You can reduce drying costs as well: clean the lint filter after every load to improve air circulation, and don't over-dry clothes. Use the cool-down cycle to allow clothes to finish drying with residual heat. Also, periodically inspect your dryer vent to ensure it's not blocked. For more tips on saving energy at home, visit

Toxic chemical pollution generated by the state of Massachusetts. Includes chemical index by name and health effects.
    http://www.geocities.com/deadmanwalking90
Cape Cod Pollution T he residents of Cape Cod are aware of the clean up efforts involving the Mass Military Reservation and the effect of pollution on the underlying groundwater. Since this area is under Federal control the massive cleanup efforts are monitored and supervised by the Federal Enviromental Protection Agency. This is unfortunately not the case involving the use of toxic materials by the state. Massachusetts is a self-invstigating, and self-insuring state. An acronym for this state would certainly seem to be a monopoly. What does this mean to residents? The state does as it wishes without fear of penalty or interferance, since neither the Federal EPA or OSHA can investigate without the invitation of the state even while in violation of state and Federal law. see Pesticide Bureau Investigation ) Yet where better than adjacent to the Military Reservation to pollute, as any material found in test wells will be assumed to be from the base. Intrestingly this herbicide is used only by the S.E. MA District
