Like the famous explorer for which she is named, the Marco Polo is a world traveler. She was built with a strong ice-strengthened hull that makes her perfect for Antarctic expeditions. Her broad teak decks are a splendid vantage point for admiring fjords in Scandinavia or South America. And her mid-size allows her to enter intimate ports around the world where the giant ships can't go.
Traveling with around 700 passengers, you'll never feel as if you're just part of the crowd. The atmosphere aboard is warm and friendly, with gentleman hosts to assure that unescorted ladies enjoy ship activities, also a guest lecturer series. Renowned for her skilled Scandinavian officers and the warm smiles of her Filipino service staff, the Marco Polo the perfect ship for exploring the world's most fascinating ports.

He sent them back to Venice as his ambassadors to the Pope. He sent a request for 100 wise men to teach his people about Christianity. They were given gold tablets to prove they were on the Khan's business so they would have safe passage. Kind of like the first passports! It took them three years to get home. The Pope had died and it was 2 years before another one was elected. Marco was 15 years old when his father returned and 17 years old when the set out on their return trip to the East. "I did not tell half of what I saw."
Marco Polo was born in 1254. Soon after his birth his family moved from Korcula to Venice. His father, Nikola Polo was an explorer who left his wife while she was pregnant with Marco on a voyage for fourteen years. His father and Uncle, Mate Polo were explorers penetrating deep into Asia. They made contacts as far as the Tatar peoples and even reaching the court of Kublai Khan in China. His father's passion for integrating east and west was passed down to Marco. Marco received the usual noble education being able to speak French and Italian, especially trade language. In addition, he was skilful in keeping records. As he listened to stories of his uncle and father about the far east, he became very interested in exploring himself. In 1271, at the age of seventeen, Marco embarked on his first journey with his father and uncle. It was during these travels that he discovered eye glasses, ice-cream, and spaghetti. It was on this trip to the east with his father and uncle that he was introduced to the court of Kublai Khan. Marco Polo was twenty-two years old when he first met the Great Khan. Upon meeting, Khublai said, "Who is that young and handsome

Interview with Caleb M. Schutz Interview by Shaun Danis Marco Polo The name comes from the early explorer, Marco Polo, who explored the east and returned with new information. Marco Polo (1254-1324), is probably the most famous Westerner traveler on the Silk Road. He was noted for his determination, his writing, and his influence. His journey through Asia lasted 24 years. He reached further than any of his predecessors, beyond Mongolia to China. He became a confidant of Kublai Khan (1214-1294). He traveled the whole of China and returned to tell the tale, which became the greatest travelogue. Tip Built in 1996, the Marco Polo Trail was one of the first in the country to truly embrace the 'biopark' concept -the idea of combining cultural, historical and zoological experiences. The Marco Polo Trail is a multifaceted exhibit tracing a three-year journey of explorer Marco Polo through Asia.
To give visitors a sense of the culture and history of the era, the Zoo recreated scenes from Marco Polo's journey including a Venetian plaza, Bedouin tent and the hull of a 13th century trading vessel. Along the trail through the 2.5-acre exhibit, visitors encounter animals native to the countries Marco Polo visited. Three habitats are featured - the Dromedary camel , the 'ship of the desert'; the elusive snow leopard , an endangered species hunted almost to extinction; and the moon bear , also known as the Himalayan or Asian black bear.

Tips for living the abundant life
Was David Thompson a Canadian Marco Polo
I am unaware if mostTheatre Companies carry on the old tradition of saying ‘break a leg’ on opening night. But one of the best things that ever happened to the famous BC explorer David Thompson was when a large log rolled from a sleigh and crushed his leg. All things really did work for the good through that tragedy (Romans 8:28). His broken leg gave him time to learn math, science, and instruments of surveying, how to keep field notes and journal-keeping. As a result, David Thompson learned the necessary skills which enabled him to put Western Canada on the map. The early 19th century Western Canada map was essentially blank until Thompson filled it in. Thompson was one of the master-builders of Canada and possibly the greatest geographer the world has known. As a land geographer, Thompson was the peer of Captain James Cook, the great sea geographer of the oceans. Thompson has been described as a great surveyor disguised as a fur trader, as a marvelous scientist with the sensitive soul of a prophet. By his own initiative and industry, he explored and surveyed more than a million and a half square kilometres of wilderness, accomplishing the staggering feat of mapping half a continent. Even Alexander Mackenzie, the renowned explorer, was quite astounded and remarked that Thompson had performed more in ten months than he expected could have been done in two years. Thompson’s map, his greatest achievement, was so accurate that 100 years later it remained the basis for many of the maps issued by the Canadian government and the railway companies. We can even credit David Thompson with the exacting survey of much of the Canadian/US 49th Boundary.

While these artifacts are hard to authenticate, there are few long-standing homes in Cavendish, P.E.I . that do not lay claim to some remnant of the ship-wrecked vessel, the Marco Polo. Its story has spread just as widely as its relics. The ship was built in 1851 by Smith Shipbuilding of Saint John, New Brunswick. The vessel took its name from the Italian explorer, whose principal claim to greatness was the new trade routes he staked out between Europe and China. Appropriately enough, the ship that bore his name also won accolades for its Pacific voyages. After completing a round trip between England and Australia in a scant 11 months and 21 days, it won the undisputed title of the fastest ship afloat in the world. Banking on this recognition, its owners sold it to the Black Bell line, where it became one of the most famous passenger ships of its day. Enduring a regular battering from the seas, however, wooden ships could not stay fast or glamorous forever. As it aged, the Marco Polo followed a predictable fall from grace. It was refitted and used in the Australian immigrant trade. By 1880, it had been condemned and was purchased by a Norwegian company to export Canadian timber. While the Marco Polo may have been carrying fresh lumber, its own wooden hull had seen its better days. In 1883, the ship was heading back for England and, just off the coast of Prince Edward Island, its seams began to pour water. The crew began to jettison cargo, but in the process, had to saw in half some of the ship's supporting girders. The move backfired, as the gale force winds began loosening the ship's tired hull even more. Finally, in an effort to salvage at least their own lives, the captain and crew ran the ship aground at Cavendish beach.

MARCO POLO
Reconstruction by THE LOOSE CANNON TEAM
Reviewed by Steve Hatcher
On of my pet hates, about which I have been known to moan at length, is the misuse of the word “literally”. So, I hope readers will understand that when I say that that Loose Cannon’s reconstruction of Marco Polo is literally breath taking, I do mean just that. Gasps and sharp intakes all-round.
This is the release that reconstruction fans have been waiting for. There can surely be few stories whose absence from the archives is more keenly felt than "Marco Polo", a story which has gained near mythical status among the “lost” episodes of Doctor Who. Dating from the middle of the programme’s first season, the first of John Lucarotti's three great historical stories (followed by "The Aztecs" and "The Massacre Of St Bartholomew's Eve"), judged on the quality of the script alone, is the programme's lost masterpiece. To that one can add a marvellous guest cast, boasting several actors who were big names on TV in 1964, technical staff on top form, lavish sets and costumes by wonderful designers, a brilliant director, and a regular cast who were reaching their peak on the show. The fact that this piece of classic television was junked is a tragedy, which borders on the criminal. Now, 38 years after Marco Polo’s one and only broadcast on UK television, viewers can again glimpse a little of what made this story special, thanks to the efforts of the Loose Cannon Team – Derek Handley, Dean Rose and Rick Brindell.

Marco Polo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Marco Polo ) was a Venetian merchant and explorer who, together with his father and uncle, was among the first Westerners to travel the Silk Road all the way to China . They lived there for seventeen years. They returned to Venice. During the wars of Venice in Italy , Marco was captured and held prisoner. Then he dictated to Rusticello da Pisa a widely read book ( Il Milione ) about his travels. While most historians do not doubt that Marco Polo did indeed reach China , in recent times some skepticism has been advanced as to whether Polo actually visited China or only retold information he had heard from others. Among other omissions, his account fails to mention chopsticks tea , foot-binding, or the Great Wall , and Chinese records of the time do not mention him, despite the fact that he claimed to have served as a special emissary to Kublai Khan Some Croats claim that he was born in the Venetian island of Curzola in the Adriatic (currently Kurcola Croatia ) and even that the Polo family was Slav in origin.

Marco Polo
April 5, 2000 Dear Post Master General, Marco Polo was a great European explorer who shouldn't go unnoticed. I think you should issue a stamp in his honour and I've done some research from when he was born in 1254 to when he died in 1324. Marco Polo was even the first European explorer to cross the entire continent of Asia. The thing is, someone who's that courageous couldn't go without a stamp. He went to places like Turkmania and Zormaria and if he had a stamp more people would know about him. Marco Polo was a brave, courageous explorer who was on so many adventures, like in 1298 he was taken captive by Genose. He was on more adventures than a super hero. His father, Nicolo gave him some influence along the way. Marco married a girl named Danota and she had 3 daughters. Before he died he said," I did not tell have of what I saw because no one would have belived me." I think Marco Polo was the greatest European explorer in the world. If you made a stamp for Marco Polo more people would no how great he is! Sincerely

March 22, 2000 Dear Post Master General, Marco Polo was the first European explorer to cross all of Asia. He discovered eye glasses, ice cream, spaghetti and riches of Asia. Marco Polo was born in the year 1254 in Venice. Marco was a Italian traveler and explorer. His parents names were Nicolo and Mate Polo. In 1298 Marco was taken prisoner and in 1299 he was released. In 1324 Marco died when he was 70 years old. Marco went on a lot of voyages in his life. He made lots of overland journeys during 1260 to 1271. When he was gone he passed through places like India, Tabriz, Iran, Sumatra, China, Bukhoro, Uzbekistan, Akko, Israel, Amu Darya, Oxus and a few other places. When Marco was lying on his death bed he said," I never told half of what I saw because no one would have believed me." Also he was the first explorer to leave a record of what he saw and did. Text and photos by Harold Stephens
What schoolboy, upon hearing of the travels of Marco Polo, wouldn't be all fired up with the spirit of adventure? I was no exception, a farm boy who had never ventured more than a hundred miles from home. But never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that one day I would follow the trail of this great explorer. My first steps on the trail blazed by Marco Polo came quite by accident. Shortly after World War II, when I was in the Marines, I was sent to a Chinese language school in Peking, known as Beijing today. Marco Polo was the subject of much of our discussions at the school. He had spent 17 years in Peking in the service of the great Mongol leader Kublai Khan, having arrived in 1275. Marco was only 17 years old when he set out from Venice with his father and uncle. It took them three and a half years to reach the Chinese capital. In Peking I devoured all the books on Marco Polo I could. His own work, written many years after his return, was essentially a travelogue solely his observations, without any abstract embellishments. Marco was not a literary man; rather, a merchant travelling with his father and uncle to open trade with China. What he wrote of was totally alien to Europe, and I often wonder how much he left out for fear he might be scorned and his tales taken to be fiction.
