The Pony Express Rides Into History
Written and published by the United States Postal Service in 1970 A little more than a hundred years ago, a courageous band of young men enlisted in an incredible enterprise to carry mail by pony relays through 2,000 miles of savage wilderness in frontier America between St. Joseph, Mo., and Sacramento, Calif.
They took an oath on the Bible of honesty and devotion to duty and went on, despite the daily threat of death, to carry the mail 616,000 milesequal to 24 times around the earthduring the 18 months the enterprise oper-ated. In doing so, they wrote the unforgettable chapter of "The Pony Express" into American History.
The Pony Express was a horse relay mail carrying system operating in both directions between Missouri and California. The service carried the mail in 10 days from St. Joseph to Sacramento, and cut in half the time required to send mail by coach. It continued for 18 months, from April 1860 until October 1861, when the cross-country telegraph was completed.
In all, 308 runs were made each way, delivering 34,753 pieces of mail. Postage was $5 per half ounce at first, but was later reduced to $1 a half ounce. Each run carried up to 20 pounds of mail. Most accounts in-dicate about 90 Pony Express rid-ers, 119 relay stations and 500 horses were used at one time or an-other during the 18 months.

It is a fact of nature that isolation of organisms results in unique and interesting evolutionary histories. For example, the mammals currently living on the island continent of Australia combine a unique ancestry of monotremes and marsupials that have evolved into ecological niches similar to placentals in the northern hemisphere. Yet, even though they have exploited the range of herbivorous and carnivorous habits of their northern counterparts, they nevertheless have many unique characteristics, for example, their mode of reproduction. Although North, Central, and South America are today connected by dry land, during most of the Cenozoic Era from about 60 to 3 million years ago, the Isthmus of Panama did not exist and South America drifted as an island continent, much like Australia is doing today. Consequently, South America evolved an isolated biota, including indigenous mammals unlike those found elsewhere at the same period of time. South American pouched marsupials occupied the carnivorous niches of their northern hemisphere placental counterparts, the former perhaps most strikingly exemplified by the Miocene saber-toothed possum Thalacosmilus , which was only a very distant mammalian relative of the familiar Pleistocene saber-toothed cat Smilodon from North America. In addition to mammalian carnivores, other groups, such as large flightless birds and land-adapted crocodilians, also were the top carnivores in terrestrial ecosystems during much of the Cenozoic. Several stocks of South American mammals, including the litopterns and notoungulates, independently evolved herbivorous habits. During the Miocene many groups of South American notoungulates evolved very high-crowned teeth, presumably for feeding on abrasive plant foods like grasses, independent of horses in North America during the Miocene. Some of the litopterns evolved a simplified limb with only a single functional digit (see

    Chapter Nine:
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PONY EXPRESS NATIONAL HISTORIC TRAIL AND RECOMMENDATIONS INTRODUCTION
The Pony Express was officially discontinued on October 26, 1861, with the completion of the overland telegraph line. During the eighteen months of operation, it made 308 rides each way, covering a distance of 616,000 miles, and carrying approximately 35,000 pieces of mail, with a good percentage of the mail (67 percent) going east from San Francisco and Sacramento; [
ANNIVERSARIES After its demise, people did not forget about the Pony Express, but its heroic history was resurrected from the annals of history as a significant page in transportation and communication history. Though William F. (Buffalo Bill) Cody demonstrated the Pony Express in his Wild West shows in the 1880s, recognition of the significance of the Pony Express came at the turn of the century after the publication of Frederick Jackson Turner's famous essay "The Significance of the Frontier in American History" in 1893. Thereafter, fearing the consequences of the frontier closing on our American character, we as a nation, drew strength from our frontier heritage and rise of the American West. In this quest for a usable past, the Pony Express became a usable American Western icon, symbolizing America's strength, work ethic, entrepreneurship, and individual heroism. American companies soon capitalized on the Pony Express to make correlations between it and their products. For example, one nationwide credit card company offered its customers the opportunity to purchase a collection of United States historic coins, one coin displaying a Pony Express rider. [

    Chapter I
    At A Nation's Crisis
The Pony Express was the first rapid transit and the first fast mail line across the continent from the Missouri River to the Pacific Coast. It was a system by means of which messages were carried swiftly on horseback across the plains and deserts, and over the mountains of the far West. It brought the Atlantic coast and the Pacific slope ten days nearer to each other.
It had a brief existence of only sixteen months and was supplanted by the transcontinental telegraph. Yet it was of the greatest importance in binding the East and West together at a time when overland travel was slow and cumbersome, and when a great national crisis made the rapid communication of news between these sections an imperative necessity.
The Pony Express marked the highest development in overland travel prior to the coming of the Pacific railroad, which it preceded nine years. It, in fact, proved the feasibility of a transcontinental road and demonstrated that such a line could be built and operated continuously the year around - a feat that had always been regarded as impossible.
The operation of the Pony Express was a supreme achievement of physical endurance on the part of man and his ever faithful companion, the horse. The history of this organization should be a lasting monument to the physical sacrifice of man and beast in an effort to accomplish something worth while. Its history should be an enduring tribute to American courage and American organizing genius.

1860 to 1861- The Pony Express Benicia was not on the regular Pony Express Route, but when the riders' missed their steamer connection to San Francisco from Sacramento, they took the alternative route through Solano County. This happened a total of 19 times in the 19 month history of the Pony Express. Benicia was a busy steamer port of call and ferry station which made it an ideal place for the riders to take the ferry to Martinez and then on to Oakland and then the ferry to San Francisco. There was a total of 190 stations and up to 300 station keepers and stock tenders. There were three kinds of stations; Home stations where riders were exchanged and accommodations for them to rest, Swing stations to change horses, and Way stations which were mail drops. 300 of the finest, fastest horses were selected since they would have to travel 10 miles in an hour, however some stations were as far apart as 25 or 30 miles. In the life of the Pony Express, over 200 riders participated, including Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill. One of the first riders was William F. Fisher who led a most interesting life after the Pony Express. Read all about the

On Sunday, August 27, 2000, the Crown Amateur Radio Association helped the Kansas State Historical Society bring the 1860's back to life by blending together the telegraph, the Pony Express and ham radio. Here is the story: The Pony Express, which operated only from April 1860 to October 1861, represented rapid communications for that erataking about 10 day to travel between St. Joseph MO and Sacramento CA. When a telegraph line was finally stretched across the plains and through the mountains, the Pony Express became a part of history. The Hollenberg Pony Express Station is thought to be the only Pony Express Station in the nation to have been preserved and left on its original location, making it a unique part of American history and a proud part of Kansas' history. This historic station, which is operated by the Kansas State Historical Society, is located near the town of Hanover in northeast Kansas. The telegraph office equipment consisted of two HF transceivers, an Alinco DX-70T and a Yaesu FT101E both running about 80 W of power, in addition to a Kenwood TM631A 2m/220MHz rig. A Chushcraft R5 vertical was used to support 20-m and 17-m operation, an inverted-V dipole was used for 40m and a simple quarterwave groundplane antenna was used on 2 meters. All radios were operated off battery power, as were two fans, which proved to be RFI generators! To make the "Telegraph Office" sound authentic, an old telegraph sounder was frequently connected to the output of the radio to turn the dits and dahs into clicks and clunks.
