Kids Basics ... home Motor Skills and Fitness The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that there is no evidence that a child's motor development can be hastened or sports performance influenced by physical training during the preschool years. Most children follow the same sequence of acquisition of motor skills. This occurs independent of gender. During the preschool years, children learn to perform tasks such as throwing, kicking, running, hopping, jumping and catching. It is best to offer an unstructured and non-competitive environment in which a child can experiment and learn by trial and error on an individual basis. Specific skills can be refined through repetitive practice only after the relevant level of motor development has been reached. Preschool children - fitness recommendations The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the following:
  • All preschool children should participate regularly in a form of physical activity appropriate for their developmental level and physical health status.

Send an E-Card THE BENEFITS OF SPORTS CAMPS Is your child ready for sports camp? by Christine Ridout of 4 Every summer, thousands of children participate in sports camps, ranging from day camps to three- to six-day overnight camps to intensive three-week academies. These camps are a wonderful experience for many children. They encourage physical fitness; improve skills; enhance coordination and self-esteem; and give children valuable lessons in teamwork, sportsmanship, self-discipline and hard work. And, for a child in love with a particular sport, it gives him a chance to play to his heart's content. For some kids heaven is a week of nonstop tennis. But sports camps are not right for every child. Sports camps focus on a single activity and can be quite intense. Children frequently train seven to eight hours a day at the overnight camps, and when they're not on the field, they watch sports videos or train "psychologically." Day camps often follow a similar routine. For some children, the intensity, both physically and psychologically, is too much. And even for children who enjoy sports camps, special health issues should be considered.

Children get support from an unexpected corner.

Pop quiz: Who just made an impassioned case that, even in these deficit-haunted, recessionary times, the federal government should start cranking up a $30 billion program to ensure every American child a crack at a good preschool? (a) Hillary Rodham Clinton, (b) The Children's Defense Fund, (c) The Nation magazine, or (d) the Committee for Economic Development. This is one of the those multiple-choice questions where the weird answer is right. It's the Committee for Economic Development, a Washington-based group that includes 250 business leaders and educators. Perhaps it's no coincidence that the same group in 1985 published a report called, "Investing in Our Children: Business and the Public Schools," that focused on the failure of America's schools to graduate enough qualified workers. Years later, the committee has concluded, as have many others, that seeds of this failure are sown before children even reach kindergarten. CED trustee Roy Bostock, an advertising executive who helped oversee the "Preschool for All" report starts by declaring, "I am a Republican."

Legislature may change public preschool plan
By JENNIFER BUNDY - The Associated Press CHARLESTON, W.Va. Never mind. That may be the message the West Virginia Legislature soon sends public schools that were ordered only last year to provide public preschool to all 4-year-olds by 2012. The state has provided free preschool to disabled 3- and 4-year-olds for years, in accordance with federal law, and some counties already provide public preschools to all children. Last year’s directive to provide preschool to all 4-year-olds is to begin being phased in this fall. The program will not be canceled. It’s "too important" to do that, says House Education Chairman Jerry Mezzatesta, D-Hampshire.
