Links to Related Sites THE EVOLUTION OF A CULTURAL LANDSCAPE Introduction to Prince Edward County: the natural/cultural mix, linked with pastoral, coastal and rural settlement vistas Prince Edward County, famous as a part of United Empire Loyalist settlement, is an island community encompassing less than 700 square kilometres, which boasts of over 800 kms of shoreline with varying geological features. The relative isolation of the island has nurtured a special rural culture, with overlays back through time as this culture evolved according to the natural setting and proximity to various markets. Within the County are to be found a remarkable mixture of heritage features (natural, architectural, archeological, historical), each meeting defined criteria for heritage significance. Clans Tartans History Travel ... Feedback Canadian History Prince Edward Island Prince Edward Island’s Celtic heritage is still very much alive, underlying many tourism and holiday-related events. This significant presence is due in large part to the fact that, in the early nineteenth century, people of Scottish origin comprised the vast majority of the colony’s population. They eventually settled across the Island, but were concentrated primarily along the north shore from Malpeque Bay to East Point and throughout Kings County and Eastern Queens County. Most of Prince Edward Island’s Scottish population came from the Highlands, Gaelic speakers who spoke little English. The Highlands were in a state of economic and social upheaval after the Battle of Culloden at the turn of the nineteenth century. These hardships, together with the highland “clearances,” religious discrimination against Catholics, a general population increase, and the exciting tales of life in America were more than sufficient to motivate Highland Scots to emigrate to the New World. Upon arriving on the Island, the Highlanders had no capital with which to buy land and found themselves entangled in “the land question” that has marked Island history. While under British rule, the Island was divided into lots owned primarily by absentee landlords who, in the majority of cases, made no effort to develop their land or foster decent and just relations with their tenant-farmers. On the other hand, the Lowland Scots, relatively few in number, enjoyed a more favourable fate than their Highland cousins did. Coming to the Island primarily from Glasgow or Greenock, they benefited from an economic and social status on par with the “English.”

Prince Edward Island! back to New Brunswick July 7th, Shediac to Summerside, 57 miles cycling, 9 miles riding [part #2] Confederation Bridge. That is the name of the link attaching PEI and New Brunswick. This 14km long, billion dollar bridge was newly opened on June 1st to much fanfare and publicity. Its claim is "longest bridge over ice covered waters". Opening of the bridge has increase traffic on the island by 30% and some say changed it forever. Seeing this new bridge was one thing I looked forward to on the trip. My view of the bridge was like the picture on left since bicycles are not allowed on the bridge. There are actually nice 4ft shoulders, but it is more a safety concern with winds, etc. A free shuttle service (i.e. pickup truck) is provided for cyclists. Not a bad deal since autos pay $35 to cross the bridge. While I was being driven across, radio chatter concerned bridge attendants catching one cyclist trying to sneak across. Claims he spoke only French and didn't see the signs. They may write him up with an $85 ticket. Shuttle drops you off at a nice visitor area. Got info and maps about PEI.

An hour after starting we found ourselves crossing the harbour of the petit Racica (Racicot). The entrance to the harbour lies north-north-east and south-south-west, and is navigable only by boats, and even then only at high tide, and in fine weather. The lands surrounding the harbour are covered with all kinds of hard wood fit for use in the construction of schooners, bateaux, and boats; whilst the soil is good in quality and fit for cultivation. About six o'clock in the evening while passing the harbour of the Grand Racico in a strong wind we were forced to put into port there. The harbour lies on the north coast eight leagues from Saint-Pierre. We found that the entrance of the harbour lies north-east and south-west, that it is about one hundred toises in width and that it is only accessable to vessels of 30 to 40 tons burden. Inside the entrance the harbour divides into two arms. One runs inland three leagues to the east-south-east towards Petit Racicot. The depth of the water has not been ascertained. The other half runs a league to the south-west and in it vessels anchor ordinarily in three to four fathoms of water whilst two rivers empty into this arm, the one in the centre and the other in the extremity.

September brings the fall with it's cool evenings, warm days, and a turning of colours you have to experience.

The Department of Education has recently released a report, A Matter of Choices, containing the following five recommendations: That the minister, through the department, implement a model for program evaluation that identifies its role in the curriculum development process; a mechanism for input from all education partners; needs assessment methodologies; qualitative and quantitative sourcing for information; and a plan and cycle for implementation. That the minister acknowledge the central role of the teacher in student assessment through the establishment and support of a program for the ongoing professional development of teachers, to enhance their knowledge and skills regarding the assessment of students. That the Teachers' Federation and education partners be consulted and that sufficient financial and human resources be allocated. That externally administered assessment instruments be used for formative purposes in program evaluation and system reporting.
