It combines object-oriented, functional and concurrent elements. Status Scala is a successor of Funnel Based on the experiences with Funnel, the Scala language underwent a fundamental redesign. Funnel was built on a concurrent core of functional nets, aimed for minimality and relied on encodings for higher-level concepts such as objects or pattern matching. Scala incorporates these higher-level constructs in the language itself to make them more accessible to programmers. On the other hand, the added expressiveness made it possible to drop concurrency constructs as primitives, and to replace them by library abstractions. In that sense, language constructs that used to be primitive were replaced by more flexible and expressive composition and decomposition constructs. The name of the language, which is an acronym for " Sca lable la nguage" reflects this shift in emphasis.

Starlog is a declarative temporal logic programming language for general purpose programming, for simulation, and for modelling reactive systems. A Starlog program consists of two components: a set of timed facts describing a history of the Starlog world up to this point, and a set of temporal logic rules describing how to compute a new state of the world from facts true in the previous and current states of the world. For example, here are some rules that compute prime numbers. When this program is executed, the rules generate facts like prime@2, prime@3, mult@4, prime@5, and so on. prime@N < integer(N), N >= 2, not(mult@N). mult@I*J < prime@I, integer(J), J >= I. Starlog repeatedly applies the program rules to the current history of the world, thereby generating a new history of the world, which gets fed back into the next iteration of the loop. The history of the world includes facts corresponding to I/O operations and to the values of program variables of conventional programming languages. As a result, Starlog programs have a natural, declarative specification of I/O and destructive update.

A secondary audio program (SAP) service is carried along side a television channel as an alternative to the standard audio that accompanies the video portion of a program. Listeners can choose this secondary audio signal through either a television, a stereo VCR equipped to receive SAP signals, or a special SAP receiver. A portable SAP receiver allows traveling individuals to catch all the audio from their favourite television show. The SAP feature allows a TV station to broadcast other information to the viewer through the audio receive system. That other information could be the same program audio in another language, or something completely different, such as weather information or Descriptive Video Services (DVS) for the visually impaired. DVS is a service where a narrator describes the action of a scene during pauses in the dialogue. Audiences can hear that an actor sadly buries his face in his hands, for example.As another example of S.A.P. application, ABC regularly provides Spanish audio commentary during "World News Tonight" and "Monday Night Football" as well as other selected sporting events and specials. They do this using the Secondary Audio Program (SAP). Viewers who had the SAP feature turned on could hear the game in Spanish.

Bristol CS Index Research Escher Escher is a declarative, general-purpose programming language that integrates the best features of both functional and logic programming languages. It has types and modules, higher-order and meta-programming facilities, concurrency, and declarative input/output. Escher also has a collection of system modules, providing numerous operations on standard data types such as integers, lists, characters, strings, sets, and programs.
