Arizona State University In addition to understanding, prediction, and control, the goal of educational psychology is to influence practice. This requires attention to the fact that people have a preference for stories, meaningful narratives about other people and the problems that they face in every day life. It is argued that the findings and concepts of our discipline are not seen as possessing verisimilitude and rarely influence educational policy and practice because they are not well contextualized for educators. To do better, we must learn to tell stories about our research that focus on real teachers and students in ordinary school setting.
The nature and mission of educational psychology is to provide psychologists, other social scientists, and a broad spectrum of educational policymakers and practitioners with data and concepts to create sensible, persuasive, and powerful stories. It is this emphasis on the importance of stories that differentiates this article from the scores of others that have examined the nature and mission of our field over the century. In recent years we have learned, as Calfee in this issue notes, that the mind has a preference for stories. Knowledge is contextualized, it is situated, it is enmeshed in webs of meaning. Educational psychologists have not, as a rule, used that insight to think about how their data and concepts can have the most usefulness. Failure to understand the importance of stories has contributed to our marginality in both psychology and education. We were warned about that problem at the very beginnings of our discipline, but we failed to heed the cautions of one of our founding fathers. In his presidential address before the American Psychological Association, John Dewey (1899) discussed psychology and social practice. He pointed out the failure that had to occur if educational psychology would not recognize that the teacher:

Introduction

Psychology is the study of human and animal behavior. It seeks to understand and explain both normal and abnormal behavior, mental ability, perception, development, and individual differences. Because it considers the mental, attitudinal, motivational, and behavioral characteristics of individuals, psychology has many subdivisions and areas of specialization and is a more complex field than many realize. Among the major sub-branches within psychology are behavioral neuroscience, cognitive, clinical, educational, social, developmental, and organizational psychology, as well as psychometrics and statistics. Psychology majors find jobs in social service agencies, non-profit organizations, government agencies, educational institutions, hospitals, pharmaceutical firms, rehabilitation centers, and correctional institutions. They also find jobs in business and industry in market research, public relations, customer service, management, advertising, human resources, and sales. While many psychology graduates work in a related occupation and obtain an advanced degree, others choose another direction. Many careers do not require a specific major but rather a wide range of demonstrated skills and accomplishments. Regardless of your career choices, increase your marketability through internships, responsible work experience, good grades, and involvement in college activities.

NORWAY Abstract when somebody explicitly asks "What is educational psychology?", and what kind of philosophical, historical or ideological debate is or ought educational psychology to be embedded in? Introduction Handbook of Educational Psychology (1996) gives a summary of the early 90s mainstream in American educational psychology. In Europe a similar development may be observed, even though there are some differences. Some tendencies could be observed both in the European and the American traditions: The cross-disciplinary tendency . Some kind of meeting and integration with other disciplines seems to be reflected in research, education and scholarly writing within the field of educational psychology. Aspects of a new framework for the relationship between practice and theory are seen Learning and development is an ongoing life-long process A new optimism is observed in which educational psychology is said to be relevant With special regard to educational psychology I ask what kinds of fundamental questions have to be considered when a teacher education program is to be designed or assessed.

How To Become a Child Psychologist
I receive many email request for information on how someone becomes a child psychologist. Here is some basic information. Fist, check your states requirements for licensure. In order to practice as a psychologist in any state, you must hold a license issued by that state. Each state may be a little different. Your best bet is to contact the licensing authority in the state in which you desire to practice. For example, if your objective is to end up practicing in California, you would check with the California Board of Psychology, and ask them to mail you information about licensing , or you can read the online summary posted at their web site. Keep in mind that each state is different, and you cannot practice in any other state unless licensed in that state. Note that a psychology license in most states is a generic license, and states do not license "child" psychologists, or clinical psychologists or any other specialty of psychology, they just license generic psychologists. When someone calls themselves a "child psychologist" they simply mean they are licensed as a psychologist, and then limit their practice to children. Hence if you want to be a "child psychologist" you would start by simply obtaining a generic psychology license by complying with the requirements for licensure in the state in which you desire to practice. Second, obtain the necessary educational background.
