Your Career Consultant Description Of Major When people first hear that you are considering a major in psychology, the initial thought is that you will be that typical psychiatrist counseling patients on a black leather couch. But there is much more to the field of psychology beyond that skewed image. Psychology investigates human development, mentoring roles, organizational structures, therapy techniques, and the connections of the mind to behavior. The knowledge and skills of psychology majors can be applied to but not restricted to the areas of residential care, social services, human resources, therapy, and teaching/research.
Residential care facilities are focused on providing shelter and services for patients with a variety of issues including mental illness, drug abuse, and delinquency.
Social service draws from many fields including childcare, law, political science, criminal justice, health and nutrition, and psychology. Entry into the field involves the seeking out of information, connecting clients with resources, and providing support to those searching for such information and resources.
Human resource professionals attempt to create a company environment that fosters professional and career development for employees along with organizational development for group and company success.

Rehabilitation Psychology is a specialty area of practice within the broad field of psychology. Rehabilitation Psychology is the application of psychological knowledge and understanding on behalf of individuals with disabilities and society through such activities as research, clinical practice, teaching, public education, development of social policy and advocacy. Professionals who provide Rehabilitation Psychology services are called Rehabilitation Psychologists. Rehabilitation Psychologists participate in a broad range of activities including clinical care, program development, service provision, research, education, administration, public policy.
Rehabilitation Psychologists who provide clinical and counseling services assist individuals in coping with, and adjusting to, chronic, traumatic or congenital injuries or illnesses that may result in a wide variety of physical, sensory, neurocognitive, emotional, and/or developmental disabilities. These may include (but are not limited to): spinal cord injury; brain injury; stroke, amputations; neuromuscular disorders; medical conditions with the potential to limit functioning and participation in life activities such as cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, or limb weakness; chronic pain; congenital or chronic developmental disorder such as mental retardation; severe psychiatric disability; substance abuse; impairments in sensory functioning; burns and/or disfigurement; deafness and hearing loss; blindness and vision loss; and other physical, mental and/or emotional impairments compounded by cultural, educational and/or other disadvantages.

Transformative alternatives to
Mental Darwinism and Interactionism
Preface, Beginning in 1859 with Darwin's (rather Lamarckian) views on mental evolution and ending with an emphasis on the regressive aspects of the federal "Leave No Child Behind" Act in America (signed by Bush on Jan, 8, 2002), this book obviously covers a fair bit of interdisciplinary and cultural-historical ground. It tells the tale of how both Mental Darwinism (i.e., the psychometric selection of the so-called fittest, most talented minds) and Interactionism (i.e., genes plus environment rationales) have guided the production, implementation, and interpretation of past and ongoing standardized testing programs. It also, however, compares the track record of these two "bell curve" based approaches with that of a succession of examples of those who took a third path -which I call " Transformative ."

Cultural Contact
Drawing upon contemporary research by social psychologists, the program has supported investigations of group contact on college campuses, diversity in the workplace, and, in one notable instance, an intervention program at the University of Michigan to help minority undergraduates overcome the effects of racial stereotyping and improve their academic performance. In all this work, the Foundation has been concerned with the way in which beliefs, attitudes, and habits of mind shape the nature of contact among groups, frequently cause misunderstandings and make the resolution of conflict difficult.
The program has been guided by a working group of social psychologists who seek to understand the ways in which culture can shape social perceptions and group conflict. Under the leadership of Dale Miller and Deborah Prentice of Princeton University, the group has published one book Cultural Divides: Understanding and Overcoming Group Conflict , which provides examples of how social psychological research can inform problems of group conflict and misunderstanding that increasingly affect the functioning of modern institutions.

About the Museum and Resource Center
The OSU Psychology Museum and Resource Center (PMRC) provides undergraduates and graduate students "hands-on" learning experiences in psychology. The PMRC contains both computer and non-computer demonstrations in such areas as animal and human learning, cognition, social psychology, and physiological psychology. Video tape demonstrations describing various aspects of invertebrate learning are also available. The resources and expertise of the PMRC are available to all primary and secondary schools as well as colleges and universities in the state of Oklahoma. Two unique features of the PMRC deserve mention. First, the PMRC maintains a training program for any student and faculty who wishes to learn how to use and create their own demonstrations. Second, the resources of the PMRC can be taken on "the road" in the form of the "Psych-Mobile." The Psych-Mobile can make visits to various educational institutions.
Examples of Activities
Activities at the PMRC can be broken into two types: demonstrations and resources. The demonstrations are hands on illustrations of real psychology experiments. See the Museum Shop for examples. Also the PMRC has resources of older documents used by psychologists. All of these materials are available for loan to any educational institution. Tours of the PMRC can also be arranged.
