The State of Qatar is a small, oil-rich peninsula projecting northward from the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula into the Arabian Gulf. With substantial oil and natural gas reserves, Qatar is one of the wealthiest states in the region and has developed high quality health care and education systems. The capital city of Doha lies on the east coast of the peninsula and features a wide mixture of modern and traditional Arabic architecture. Almost 90 percent of Qatar's population lives in Doha and its surrounding suburbs. The Wahhabi sect of Sunni Islam is the predominant religion. Photo courtesy of Tom Weeks. Only 20 percent of the nation's population is native to Qatar, as a large number of expatriates from India, Pakistan, Iran, North Africa, and various Western nations live and work in the country. Qatar's official language is Arabic, although Urdu and English are widely spoken, especially among the foreign community. Education in Qatar is free from the primary to the university level.

If you fly either Gulf Air or Qatar Airways you can get to Doha from anywhere in the Gulf, most of Asia, as well as from New York and a number of cities in India and Pakistan. The only European cities served are Athens and London. Qatar is small. Qatar does not have a bus or service-taxi system, so regular taxis and rented cars are your only options for getting to and from the airport and around the country. You can rent a car on most foreign licenses, and while driving can be a little hairy, you'll have no problem getting fuel.
