    QBasic Programming Beginner's Tutorial
Students can program the computer to perform different tasks. Some of the things that programs can accomplish are: Solve repetitive tasks.... For example using math formulas! Creating an interactive program... for example you are giving a survey or test and you could program the computer to ask the questions and then evaluate the answers. Use programming to create games, graphic designs, cool sounds and much more! Use a Qbasic program to control an external device such as a motor. This is called interfacing. Qbasic is only one of many different programming languages. Some others include Visual Basic, ADA, PASCAL, FORTRAN, C and C+, and many others. We will also look at Visual Basic 5.0 Learning Edition software in this course. Qbasic takes its roots from the older GW Basic. Some differences between GW Basic and Qbasic are: Qbasic is a software package with menus and an extensive online HELP section to get you programming quicker and easier. GW Basic used Line Numbers for each statement while Qbasic does NOT use line numbers.

    QBasic Programming Worksheet
    The Dummy String
The dummy string is often used in input statements when you want the user to simply press the enter key to continue on with the program. You can call the variable by any name you wish but normally it is called dummy$ as the programmer does not want the user to enter and store any value in the string. Try this Example: CLS PRINT "Welcome to my program" PRINT "this program shows you how" PRINT "to use the Dummy String!" INPUT "When you are ready to move on press the enter key! ", dummy$ CLS PRINT PRINT "this can be helpful when you " PRINT "to pause a screen allowing a user" PRINT "to read text" INPUT "press enter to continue...", dummy$ CLS PRINT "So now you see how the Dummy String works!" PRINT "Thank you for running my program!"
    2. The Locate Statement: Used to place text at a specific point on the screen. Syntax: LOCATE row, column, cursor row – the number (integer) of a row on the screen column – number of a column cursor – a value indicating whether cursor is visible or not (0 = cursor off, 1 = cursor on)

    Lab: Computer Programming with QBASIC
    Background
In the early days of computers, most people wrote and ran their own programs. This led to the conclusion that everybody that was going to use a computer needed to learn how to program. Courses like "Computers and Society" were substantially about programming. Now, however, it is clear that most people who use computers are not programmers, but use programs (applications) written by others; programs such as word processors, spreadsheets and database programs. Today, some of these can involve programming. Here, building formulae in Excel, you have done some programming. And even major word processors such as Microsoft Word contain built-in programming languages for customizing work. Usually, however, anything substantial is done by specialists within an organization. It can still help to understand something about programming. But this is nowhere near the amount of programming that was done to create the applications. Here you will examine some pre-written programs to see how they work, using the QBASIC programming language. DOS always came with a built-in programming language. Earlier DOS versions came with GWBASIC, but later, QBASIC became the standard. Early versions of Windows came with a programming language, but starting with Windows 95, programming languages became for-sale add-ons.

    Begin Programming With QBASIC
    DOS

How would you like to design your own computer programs? It’s easy with the QBASIC programming language. At least among seasoned computer programmers, learning the QBASIC programming language is considered easy. That opinion sounds like a matter of perspective to us. Even though the acronym BASIC stands for Beginner’s All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code, that title sounds like beginning brain surgery to some people. Take heart: QBASIC isn’t that difficult. Its language structure, or syntax, uses English words and phrases, punctuation, and algebra-like equations. It does have its share of cryptic commands, such as IOCTL and SADD, but even the advanced commands make sense after some training. With some study and trial and error, you’ll be able to create DOS computer programs, from simple games to complex business applications. Everyone has to start somewhere, and this is the perfect place for a beginning programmer. It’s free and easy to learn. We can’t teach you to program with QBASIC in this space, but we can introduce you to the possibilities with using this beginner-oriented language.
