Grade Level - 4th Quotations I. Grade and Developmental Level: 4th Grade Language Arts II. Objective: · Students will be able to punctuate and capitalize quotations correctly. · Students will be able to use quotations correctly in their writing. III. Procedures: · Focus: The teacher will pass out copies of a page in the book The Bernstein Bears Get Stage Fright that contains quotations. The teacher will direct the students to find as many quotations in that passage as they can. Once students have been given time to find the quotations, the teacher will ask for students to raise their hands and point out the quotations they found. The teacher will then explain to the students that they will be discussing quotations. The teacher will also point out that quotations are used in a variety of writing and that knowing how to correctly include quotations in one’s writing is important. · Input: The teacher will explain that a quotation is the exact words of a speaker. The teacher will also explain that quotation marks show where the speaker’s exact words begin and end. The teacher will tell the students that the first word in a quotation begins with a capital letter. Next, the teacher will explain that when a quotation comes last in a sentence, students will use a comma to separate the speaker from the quotation. Finally, the teacher will tell the students how to correctly punctuate a sentence with a quotation in it when that sentence involves a statement, question, or exclamation. The teacher will remind students to remember the period at the end of the sentence. After explaining the correct format to be used when including a quotation in a sentence, the teacher will model correct usage of quotations that meet the criteria mentioned above.

Printable Version for your convenience! Language Arts: Direct and Indirect Quotations by: Diane Perigin GRADE LEVEL: 4th OBJECTIVE: The students will differentiate between direct and indirect qoutations. PROCEDURE: The teacher will write the words to make up a sentence on diferent pieces of paper (1 word per page). The teacher will also have pieces of paper with different punctuation marks, including quotation marks. The teacher will ask for volunteers to take a piece of paper. The students will then look at their word or punctuation mark and line up in the correct order so as to make the sentence make sense. The rest of the class will then read the sentence aloud and determine if the sentence is in correct order, and whether or not it is a direct or indirect quotation. If it is a direct quotation, then two stidents will need a sheet of paper with a quotation mark on it. They will then need to place themselves in the correct position in the sentence.

A Quotation a Day: Just What the Language Doctor Ordered!
Many teachers have discovered the power of famous quotations. Such quotations can be used to develop students' writing and critical thinking skills. Included: "Why use quotations?" plus a quotation a day for 180 days of school. Last year at P.S. 209, a K-8 school in Brooklyn, New York, principal Howard Leibowitz asked each teacher to select a quotation that would be printed in large type, laminated, and hung over the classroom doorway. "Initially, many teachers thought this was a hokey idea," teacher Elyse Hunt told Education World, "but it caught on quickly. Teachers and students eagerly read and sometimes pondered the meanings of those quotations." Leibowitz encouraged teachers to initiate discussions about the quotations, added Hunt. Teachers reinforced them in a variety of ways. Hunt even created hidden-message word search puzzles using the Puzzlemaker Web site. The hidden message was a well-known quotation.
