They are very mild mannered and enjoy being handled, but please, don’t buy one as an Easter gift. Through my volunteer work at animal shelters I have seen countless rabbits become homeless during the months following Easter because people got them as gifts and didn’t want the responsibility after the thrill of a new pet was over. Nutrition Commercial rabbit pellets are available in most pet stores. Contrary to popular belief, they can not survive on a diet of lettuce and carrots, however, these can be offered as healthy tasty treats and make your rabbit a happypet. You can also treat your rabbit to sunflower seeds (it’s fun to watch them spit the shells out) nuts and fruits, but don’t overdo it. They might come to prefer these items and refuse their regular diet. You may be shocked, one day, to find your rabbit eating it’s own feces. This practice is called coprophagy. While disgusting to humans, coprophagy is a perfectly normal practice for rabbits that helps aid in digestion, and increases nutrient absorption within the body. As with any pet, fresh water should be readily available at all times. Housing Rabbits can allowed free run of the house if they are litter trained, but if your rabbit is to be kept in a cage, it should be housed individually in an enclosure no smaller than 5 square feet, 16 inches high and have smooth flooring. It's Nicer to Neuter By Carina Norris If they don't want to breed from their pets, responsible dog and cat owners have their pets neutered. But rabbit owners? Far too few rabbit owners know that their pets would be far happier and healthier if they had this simple operation. In the past, many female rabbits which were assumed to have died from 'old age' were actually killed by reproductive cancers, such as breast, uterus and ovarian cancer. Unless they are spayed (the neutering operation for female animals), up to 80% of female rabbits naturally develop these cancers by the age of five years. As soon as they are old enough to breed - at around four to six months - they will start having repeated pregnancies, or false pregnancies, and will probably become moody and aggressive. However, spaying eliminates or reduces the behavioural problems, and prevents the possibility of your pet developing these fatal cancers. Male rabbits benefit from being neutered, too. Boy bunnies have gained a somewhat unfortunate reputation for being 'bruisers', but if they are neutered, they will be less likely to fight. Neither will the operation affect your rabbit's personality - except for perhaps making them calmer and easier to live with, both for you, and any rabbit companions they may have. Neutered rabbits have a much more laid-back attitude, and are much less likely to bite or scratch their owners, or attack even when a hand is put inside their cage or hutch, or be destructive in the home.

Neutering your Rabbit Rabbits are social animals and like to live in groups. A rabbit on its own is perfectly acceptable as long as you have time to spend with it. If you have more than one rabbit it is best, to prevent lots of unwanted young, to have them neutered. A lot of research has been carried out recently on the subject of neutering pet rabbits. Entire male rabbits, that is males which have not been neutered or castrated, can be very aggressive and mark their territory if kept together. Unneutered males and females kept together may also fight, and females kept together will not necessarily get on. If you are not going to breed with your rabbit it is best to have it neutered. Male rabbits (bucks) can be castrated from around 3 to 4 months of age. This is the age at which the male rabbit can actually start to be able to breed. The testicles normally descend at this time making the castration operation possible. Female rabbits (does) can be neutered (spayed) at 5 to 6 months of age. This is the age at which the doe can come into season, is sexually mature, and can start to breed. The spaying operation involves the removal of the ovaries and the womb. Research shows that a high percentage (up to 80%) of unspayed females can develop womb cancer (ovarian or uterine). The risk of this happening is obviously reduced if your rabbit is spayed. Once the instinct to breed has been removed by neutering you will find that your rabbit is calmer and less prone to being aggressive and destructive.
