Hay there, got any food? Hay is the best food to give your rabbit. Start a baby rabbit out on alfalfa hay and work up to grass hay. Your pet will also like special rabbit pellets, available from a pet supply store. Give small rabbits 1/4 cup of pellets a day; larger rabbits get 1/2 cup. Pellets are a good source of nutrients and energy, but don't overfeed or you'll have a fat bunny! Rabbits are total vegetarians, and yours will need two to four cups of fresh veggies every day. Feed green veggies such as dandelion leaves, spinach, parsley, broccoli and collard greens. You can also try root vegetables, such as carrots (just like Bugs likes!), turnips, parsnips and celery. Add in a little bit of fruit, such as apple or tomato. Just make sure everything is chopped up nice and small.

Rabbit Pet Care brought to you by Doolittle's Pet Stores... Caring for your Rabbit Rabbits are one of the most popular of pets, most families at one time or another have had a pet rabbit. Pet rabbits are hybrids of the wild rabbits, originally from Africa, then introduced into Spain by the Moors. It is said that the wild rabbits in Britain are descended from pet rabbits that were originally gifted to our royalty, some several hundred years ago - guess what? they escaped and started breeding in the wild. That is one story! This is the other. Romans regarded the rabbit as a great delicacy, they used to keep rabbits in a large walled enclosure called a leporaria. Rabbits were not seen in Britain until the Monks started to breed them during the 13th century and of course some escaped. During the 1960's wild rabbits increased in such number that we 'had' to unleash Myxamotosis, this terrible virus almost killed all the rabbits in Britain. It was not until the 18th century that the breeding of rabbits started in earnest and this gave rise to the furs of rabbits becoming fashionable for coats.

Fly-strike Your Rabbit and Stone Lion Rabbit Health Check Stone Lion Veterinary Centre offers a free check up consultation, prior to vaccination, for all rabbits. During this appointment we will thoroughly examine your rabbit and check the teeth and give advice on diet. Back to the top Vaccination Policy Rabbits should be vaccinated annually against myxomatosis and VHD. The vaccination comprises two injections which should be given in the spring, at least one week apart. In areas of high prevalence of these diseases the vaccinations can be given twice a year. Rabbits can be vaccinated against myxomatosis from six weeks. Myxomatosis is found in wild rabbit populations and is carried by rabbit fleas and mosquitoes. The signs of myxomatosis are puffy eyelids and discharge from the eyes. Death usually occurs about a week later. VHD or viral haemorrhagic disease can strike at any time. Sudden death in rabbits may be due to this calicivirus. Other signs of infection include not eating, fever, followed by convulsions, coma and death. If there is an outbreak of the disease in your area it is advisable to vaccinate against VHD twice a year instead of annually. Further details on rabbit vaccination can be found in the leaflets on rabbit vaccination and VHD obtainable from Stone Lion Veterinary Centre Reception - or ring the surgery for a rabbit pack.

Things to take into consideration are: Space - if you have, for example, a small flat with no access to a garden a large dog would not be practical. Time - if you do not have the time to groom your pet daily it is advisable not to have long-haired pets; time for exercising dogs is also a factor. Exotic animals also usually require time to look after. Life-span - do not forget that cats can easily live for 15 years and dogs 12 years. Budget - think about the costs of looking after an animal. The larger the pet the more it will eat. Worming tablets are sold depending on weight. Drugs if your pet is ill will also cost more than if you have a smaller animal. Exotic animals also may cost a lot more to treat if they are ill than a less exotic pet. Whatever animal you decide to buy always make sure that the animal is bright and lively and the surroundings are clean.

    WHERE FROM?
A reliable breeder is your best source.
Visit the breeder if possible to see the young rabbit's parents, which is a good way of seeing how big your rabbit will be on maturity.
Usually most breeds of rabbits reach maturity at six months of age. WHICH BREED?
Domestic rabbits are divided into two classes, Fur and Fancy.
For pets, usually the Fancy type rabbits are chosen, as the are smaller and more patterned. CARING FOR YOUR BABY RABBIT
A rabbit can leave the doe (mother) at eight weeks of age.
If the rabbit is to be a child's pet, eight years old is a recommended age to be responsible for a pet rabbit. Baby rabbits in particular are very lively, so help will be needed for the child to look after his/her new pet at first.
Grooming and handling soon has your pet manageable. Meal times are a good time for this to be done. HOUSING Hutches made of wood are the most common form of keeping your rabbit warm and dry. They should be weatherproof and at the same time, well ventilated.

    Rabbits as Pets
The Animal Rescue League adopts rabbits to be family pets. Under no circumstances should a rabbit be used for food for other animals; for experimentation or laboratory work; or for any other use other than as a family pet. The ARL strictly enforces this policy under the terms of the adoption contract.

    Housing
Provide a roomy cage, six times the size of an adult rabbit. A front opening door is preferable for rabbit to come in an out on her own; top opening cages are nice too in that they allow humans to reach in and out. Both top and front opening door is ideal. Door must be large enough for litter box. Provide toys in cage.
Provide a heavy pellet bowl or clip-on feeder for food and a water bottle or crock for water. If rabbit tends to get wet chin from a water bowl, switch to a bottle.
    Running Space
Outdoors: fenced patio, porch or wire playpen (with floor), daytime only, with supervision.
    Consumables
    For digestion, try the following:
    • Papaya enzymes/multiple enzymes (especially Prozyme for prevention of fur-block and enteritis).

    http://www.geocities.com/hollands3354/petcare.html
I t is important to acquire a cage, before bringing your rabbit home. He will need a safe place to rest, and get used to his new surroundings. He will also need a safe place to stay when you are not around to supervise his activities, and it will become home to him. For a Holland Lop, a 24in.X 24in. cage will be enough for him. He needs at least this much room. The cage should have a wire floor of 1 inch X 1/2inch wire. This is a small enough weave not to let his feet fall through, but big enough to allow any urine and droppings to fall through, so that his space remains clean. Rabbits are very clean animals by nature and do much better when they are allowed to live this way. Always, one bunny to a cage. This is important because they are very territorial by nature, and need their own space to feel secure. For an indoor cage, a tray is required under the wire to catch all of the droppings. This tray should be cleaned often to keep the ammonia fumes from becoming strong and threatening the quality of the air that he breathes. Kitty litter used in the tray, particularly in the hot spots(where he urinates regularly), will help keep the smell down until cleaning time. Just scoop out the small area where he goes regularly and replace the litter. If the wire itself becomes dirty, a wire brush can be used to keep it clean. Water is a very important part of a rabbit's diet. A heavy crock style bowl that can't be easily tipped works best. A rabbit will not eat at all if water is not available at all times. The water should be changed daily and the crock cleaned thoroughly at least once a week. A solution of chlorox and water works nicely to sterilize it.

    Pet Care Tips:
    Pets in Pockets
From the moment you hold a soft ball of fluff cupped in your hands, you're smitten. The nose twitches, the whiskers wiggle, and the eyes shine. A fragile, furry bundle of love has put its trust in you, and you have made a new best friend. Welcome to the world of pocket pets. Rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, guinea pigs, and ferrets are often called "pocket pets" because they are small, cute, and inexpensive. Their name is not meant to imply, however, that they're disposable or that they can be neglected. These small animals have specific diet, housing, and handling requirements, and they need care and attention just as much as a dog or cat. And if they're well cared for, they can also be just as much fun. No place like home
    Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize
You can enrich your pet's environment and keep him comfortable and active with a number of accessories. A "hide box"a small box, tube, or other enclosed area where your pet can conceal himself-will make him feel safe and comfortable. Plastic tunnels, wheels, hollow rolling balls with latching lids, and other toys are available that can let your pet exercise. Make sure your pet is safe and can't get trapped inside or catch his feet or tail on a seam or a corner. Also make sure that the toys are made out of metal or durable plastic so your furry friend can't chew and ingest them. You can buy chewing blocks made out of wood or very dense pressed plant fibers for rodents. Rodents' teeth grow throughout their lifetimesthey chew constantly to keep their choppers filed down to a comfortable length.
