Pet Care for Youth What all (responsible) pet guardians need to know
The 7 essentials of responsible pet care Friends for Life Animals trust you to provide care for the rest of their lives. This is a big responsibility but it is very rewarding. Here is what you must provide for your pet: Food All animals need to be fed the correct food. Cats cannot eat dog food, nor can guinea pigs eat rabbit pellets or birds live on seeds alone. Generally, if your pets are young and active they need high energy food. When they get older and slow down they need food that has less fat. Water Give your pet plenty of fresh water. While there are many different types of animals, one thing they have in common is that they all require fresh water. Change the water every day and wash the water container regularly. Shelter Shelters should keep your pet warm, dry and safe. Dogs need a weatherproof dog house, rabbits and guinea pigs need a shelter box and cats like the safety of your whole house. Small animals such as mice need nesting boxes in their homes. Exercise Keep your pet fit. Plenty of exercise will keep your pet happy and healthy. Walk your dog twice a day. If you have a rabbit make a special exercise area or buy a harness and go for walks.

Owning a Ferret Ferrets can be a lot of fun, and under the right circumstances they can make wonderful pet. They are not the same as caring for a dog or a cat, and before getting one of these playful critters you should try to learn as much about them as possible. They are not, however, usually recommended in household with very small children. General Information Ferrets come in several different color schemes: the Fitch ferret is the most popular. Fitch ferrets have a buff colored coat with black markings on the face, feet, and tails. Albino ferrets are white with pink eyes. Some ferrets have a buff coat with light markings. The female ferret is called a jill, the male is a hob, and the infants are called kits.

Rabbits Rabbits are naturally very active
They are creatures that need to run, jump and burrow
In the wild rabbits are sociable creatures living together in large groups in underground warrens. When kept as pets, two does from the same litter are good company. A neutered buck and a female are best companions. Never keep un-neutered bucks together as when mature they will most certainly fight in a confined space. However, two neutered bucks do get along well. Apart from cats, rabbits are the most unwanted pets to come into our care so please—be sensible and do not breed from your rabbit. Always provide a nibbling branch of fruit or birch tree as overgrown incisors is a common problem in pet rabbits. Check them if he seems off his food as he could starve to death if not treated. SUMMER PET CARE TIPS
Heat Stress Hot summers in Davis and other hot places
Any pet can suffer heat stress, dogs, cats, birds, horses, rabbits, etc. but some animals are more prone or susceptible:
  • very young or very old animals
  • short-nosed breeds of cats and dogs
  • overweight animals
  • pets with cardiovascular or respiratory problems
  • heavy coated breeds
  • animals with a history of heat stress
  • so-called arctic breeds of dogs
  • Rabbits cannot tolerate temperatures above 85-90 degrees very well
[menu]
Help Prevent Heat Stress
  • Provide plenty of clean, fresh water at all times, change water daily
  • provide adequate shade and/or shelter from the sun and, if pets are kept in a kennel, adequate air circulation
  • avoid exercise during hot weather
  • hot pavement can mean hot or burned paws, avoid walking your dog on hot pavement or roads
  • baby pools filled with cool water can be fun and cooling for most dogs (use the hard plastic pool)
  • fill a gallon milk container with water, freeze, place it in cage or in a cool spot in the yard so rabbit, cat or dog can lay next to it and get cool
  • NEVER leave pets in a parked vehicle!!!!

Eva's Home Page Eva's Cavy Page Eva's Mouse Page Eva's Rat Page ... Eva's Rat Articles Differing views on pet care:
I think it is very interesting that people have so many different views on the topic of pet care. I have been thinking about this a lot. Some people I know use the smallest cages they possibly can and they give their animals the cheapest and easiest-to-feed kind of food to the animals, in order to be able to keep as many animals as possible for breeding purposes. Some of these people, when asked, of course have totally other views on pet care than the person with just a few highly beloved pets. This is exactly as with dog owners. Some dog owners think it is totally ok to leave the dog alone all day, and take it out on a 5 minute pee walk once in a while. Other dog owners would feel that it is totally unthinkable to leave such a highly social animal as a dog alone all day, and would also take the dog out for long walks every day. Some dog owner's fool themselves by getting two dogs and think that two dogs may be happier together in the absence of their owner. But two lonely dogs are just two lonely dogs, waiting for their owner. It is better to pay somebody to walk the dog during the day, or even pay somebody (a human companion) to

Photo courtesy Cathy Powell Rabbits are an all time popular pet for children and adults alike. We are attracted to them due to their soft cuddly fur, small size, and quiet, sweet dispositions. Most can be kept indoors or out (except in extreme weather). Bunnies are pets that prefer to be clean, and most can be house trained. They do need to chew to keep their teeth trim, so you must watch out for your electrical cords if you keep them inside! Sizes vary with the type of breed. The Netherland Dwarf only gets to be about 2 pounds, while the English Lop can be 10 pounds and up. Regular rabbits can get pretty big (18-20 inches), bigger than you might think! Care and Feeding:
Rabbits, both dwarfs and regulars eat the same kinds of foods, which are vegetables, fruits, rabbit pellets, and alfalfa or timothy hay. Baby rabbits (under 3 months old) shouldn't be fed fresh fruits and vegetables because it can upset their stomachs. However, when they get older they should eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Chew sticks or hard pellets are good for rabbits that want to chew a lot. Their teeth grow constantly like hair so they need to wear them down by chewing. If their teeth get too long, you must take them to a veterinarian to get them trimmed! They will need a fresh supply of water every day. In general, rabbits are healthy, and only need to see a veterinarian if they get ill or hurt.
