Wild Things Doing the Wild Thang
January 27, 2001
Oh man, I am one sick individual. I just spent the 90 minutes of my life watching raccoons fuck in my backyard. Yeppers, I'm a Class 1 perv alright.
See, there's a big open field behind my house that has all kinds of wildlife. I have coyotes, skunks, snakes, raccoons, you name it. But it can be really cool sometimes. A few weeks ago I saw three of my resident coyotes out there just before sunset. They were so beautiful I just stood there transfixed by them. Last summer I discovered that one of the neighborhood raccoons was living under my house. I had several encounters with him as he stood on my fence line and I was hanging out my bathroom window observing him with a flashlight. I fixed the opening where the were getting under the house though, luckily without trapping it under there and having it die and stink up my house.
So tonight I'm sitting in my living room watching TV and around 9pm I hear this funky squeal from my backyard. I opened the blinds and flipped on the light to find two raccoons going at it not ten feet away. So I pulled up a chair and watched. I even called my dad. "Hey dad, guess what I'm doing right now!" Who needs Wild Discovery when you've got screwing raccoons right here at home?
So I sat there watching them go at it. And go at it. And go at it. For an hour and a half they went at it. Poor Rhonda (I decided to give them names) is was looking bored. Randy was holding her there and giving her an occasional thrust, but it apparently didn't do much for her. My heart goes out to her. Ladies, have you ever had bad sex and find yourself laying there thinking "Jeez, would you just

Raccoons
Raccoons are very sweet creatures. You are very lucky to be accepted by there
appearence near your home.
What Coons Will Eat
Raccoons will eat almost anything from fruit to meats. I've never
seen a creature that have such a wide selection of tastes. I've
seen raccoons who would eat strawberrys and others who hated them. So
it really depends on the coon. Although I have seen one that
had to try everything at least once. He was of course the
fat Ben. Raccoons will eat cat and dog food. They also like treats of chocolate
and basic junk food (just a little:-). A lot of people complain about
feeding chocolate to raccoons so they suggest you don't.
Personally we haven't had a problem as long as it is only a treat once in a while. You can regularly feed them cat and dog food daily. Many also enjoy bread and crackers but don't seem to get too excited over popcorn. they seem to like some fruits from time to time but I don't know if too much fruit could hurt there digestion so I would say moderate with the fruit.

Wild Animals and Animal Traps From time to time undomesticated or "wild" animals such as raccoons wander into residential areas. These animals should not be approached. The Peninsula Humane Society advises citizens not to attempt to capture or trap wild animals. A qualified animal control company is best qualified to handle traps and animals.
The most effective protection from raccoon and other animal problems is barriers and discouragement. Remove whatever attracts raccoons or other creatures to your property. Feed pets indoors if possible or take up the outdoor dishes and leftovers as soon as possible. Keep trash cans in a closed garage or utility room until trash pickup day. Fence your garden. Vaccinate your pets.
Homeowners should also eliminate places that could become a den for a raccoon. Fill in tree cavities, cap chimneys and seal off attics, but always make sure a raccoon is not inside first. More info can be found in PHS's brochure on Living with Raccoons . For other tips contact the Peninsula Humane Society. To receive information about how to avoid attracting animals as well as a list of trappers in the area call City Hall at the number below.

When Raccoons Fall through Your Ceiling
The Handbook for Coexisting with Wildlife
Andrea Dawn Lopez
Foreword by Lynn Marie Cuny

Have you ever had raccoons fall through your ceiling? Discovered a nest of sparrows in your hanging flower basket? Or how about woke up one morning to discover deer have nibbled on your flower garden, reducing your blossoms to stems? If so, you're not alone. The paths of humans and wildlife cross all the time, and it is the aim of this handbook to make sure those paths cross as peacefully as possible. Andrea Dawn Lopez, a former manager at Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation, Inc., in San Antonio, Texas, has distilled her knowledge of dealing with wildlife in When Raccoons Fall through Your Ceiling . She tackles a wide variety of situations that occur when human and non-human worlds clash. Have you found a baby bird on your porch? Is a snake taking up residence in your garage? Or perhaps woodpeckers are drumming against your house? Lopez offers advice on how to deal humanely with each situation with tips on relocation, repelling, and when to call in the experts (for when the bears are rattling your trash cans).

Living With Racoons Racoons RACCOON FACTS Raccoons (Procyon lotor) belong to the Procyonidae (those who came before dogs family. This highly intelligent mammal has a rounded head with short nose, small ears, and a sturdy body with minimum-length, thick, grayish brown fur. Raccoons are easily identified by (1) a distinctive pattern of alternating black and yellowish white rings around a large, bushy tail and (2) a unique narrow black face mask with two white patches above the eyes. They average 3 to 3 2 feet long (including the tail) and 12 inches high, weigh 15 to 48 pounds, and live for 10 to 13 years. Females produce one litter a year, numbering from one to six kits and averaging four or five. Over most of the U.S. and southern Canada, except in the western mountain ranges, raccoons are found in many different habitats, especially near streams, ponds, and marshes in mature wooded areas. Their range is expanding further north into Canada, because of habitat lost to agriculture and the apparent warming of northern weather. As humans have moved into raccoon habitat, this mammal has proven more adaptable than most. For nesting sites it prefers warm, dry, dark, easily protected areas. In the wild, it dens in tree hollows, hollow logs, or sometimes rocky caverns. In urban areas, raccoons may nest in drainpipes, basements, crawl spaces and house attics. Raccoon populations now are actually densest in suburban and urban areas.

INFORMATION LINKS World Wide Raccoon Web GENERAL INFORMATION
The raccoon is one of the best known and most easily recognized mammals in our region. They are very adaptable and intelligent animals, capable of living in close proximity to humans. In North Carolina, raccoons are most common in the eastern coastal plain section because of the abundant wetland habitat. DESCRIPTION
Raccoons are medium sized mammals, with adults ranging in weight from about 8 to 20 pounds and a length of 28 to 33 inches. Male raccoons are generally larger than the females. The fur is relatively long with an overall coloration of grizzled gray to brownish black. The most distinctive features of the raccoon are the black-ringed tail and the blackish coloration on the front of the face which resembles a bandit's mask. RACCOON

"The raccoons found in North America are the most familiar wild animals. Hunting by night, they have an omnivorous diet; but they are especially fond of crayfish.
More so than any other wild animal, raccoons are often sought after as pets. This is perhaps because they remind people of their own youngsters - what with their grasping paws, big eyes, and a cry that sounds very much like a human baby. As pets they seem to be good natured until they are about a year old, and then many people find that their docile pet has become a pest. You can't take wild out of wildlife, and in spite of their cuteness, raccoons are no exception. To keep wild animals as pets requires very special handling and knowledge that the general public usually doesn't have. I, myself, prefer to see the many homeless domestic animals adopted and the wildlife remain in the wild." - Amy Brackenbury

Facts on feeding Wild Raccoons Feeding wild raccoons in your backyard can be a highly rewarding experience indeed. You can watch raccoons for hours on end and never tire of their antics. But feeding wild animals is something you should take care to do properly, to avoid nasty situations later on.
Raccoons will eat just about anything . Generally speaking, they like peanuts, sweets, fruits, bread, peanut butter, and especially cat and dog food. But don't overload them with treats and you shouldn't get used to feeding them every single night.
Don't feed raccoons by hand! They sure are cute but a raccoon may bite you quite accidentally, mistaking a finger for food; or, he may bite you on purpose if he thinks you're taking his food away from him. No matter what the reason is, once it's happened you're both in trouble, because you'll have to be tested for rabies, and the local health authorities will want to capture the raccoon who bit you and cut off his head to test him for rabies.
Put out several plates of food to avoid fights. It's usually a good idea to put a few dishes out, if you're going to feed, so there aren't too many territorial squabbles over the food.

Adult raccoons may be anywhere from 24 to 40 inches in length (including 8-12 inches for tail) and weigh 14 to 40 pounds depending upon locale (larger raccoons in the north) and sex (males are larger than females). Average is about 3 feet and 25-30 pounds. Captive raccoons can weigh considerably more than their wild neighbors and they have a tendency to obescity. I would venture a safe guess that the male raccoon who weighed a record 62 pounds was not found in the wild.

Depending on the sources, raccoons average life-span in the wild is anywhere from 5 to 8 years while it ranges from 8 to 13 years for captive raccoons. Reportedly, there have been cases of raccoons living up to 16 years in the wild and 21 in captivity. In the wild, the greatest mortality occurs during the first 2 years of life - the principal causes of which are man (hunting, trapping, cars, dogs). In captivity, I would imagine the greatest mortality would also have to occur during the first 2 years of life - with the principal causes again being man (ignorance as to nutrition needs and proper raising of infant raccoons, failure to provide vet care necessary for captive wildlife, dumping a "pet" raccoon into the wild when it becomes too wild to handle).

Damage prevention
Although the raccoon may cause numerous nuisance problems, there are a number of ways to deter or prevent additional damage. Homeowners having a problem with raccoons in garbage should store the garbage in a stout metal or plastic container and close the lid tightly. It should be wired, clamped or tied shut if necessary. If the problem persists it may be necessary to tie the can to a post or other solid object to prevent it from being tipped over, or to put the garbage cans inside the garage or outdoor shed. Raccoons may be attracted by dog or cat food left out overnight, and it may be necessary to feed pets indoors or to provide food only during the day. Feeding of raccoons is strongly discouraged and is prohibited in some areas. Raccoons that have been intentionally fed tend to become very bold and dependent on people and can become especially troublesome in the neighborhood where the feeding occurs. Attics:
If raccoons are denning in an attic, the best way to get rid of them is to wait until all raccoons leave the attic, then repair the hole where they are gaining access. Raccoons normally leave their dens nightly to forage. However, in the spring and early summer, young raccoons may be present that are unable to leave the den. In winter, raccoons may remain in their dens for weeks at a time during very cold or stormy weather, coming out only on "warm" nights. Mothballs or moth crystals placed in nylon mesh bags or pie tins in an enclosed area will create fumes that may help repel the raccoons. Several pounds of mothballs or crystals would be needed for an average size attic. If the raccoons will not leave on their own, removal with a live trap may be necessary.

Raccoons and Rabies Questions and Answers About Oral Rabies Vaccine Why are there concerns about raccoons and rabies? Raccoon rabies is found throughout the atlantic and southeastern states. It is a viral infection that can affect the nervous system of any mammal, including humans. The disease is almost always fatal to both people and animals. Raccoon rabies spreads rapidly and infects large numbers of raccoons. The disease often spreads to other wildlife and pets, making human exposure a real concern. To address this problem, the USDA/APHIS/Wildlife Services and the Tennessee Department of Health are participating in a combined federal and state agency program, to keep this animal epidemic from spreading further westward by eliminating raccoon rabies in northeastern Tennessee counties. The oral rabies vaccine bait, shown here, consists of a square block made from a compressed mixture of fishmeal and fish oil known to attract raccoons. The vaccine (dyed pink) is inside a plastic packet that is inserted in the middle of the block. Baits are distributed from vehicles or airplanes. Most of the baits will be consumed about five days after being distributed. People should tell their children to leave the baits alone. Pet owners are asked to keep their dogs and cats inside or on leashes so raccoons can eat the baits. Are gloves required to handle the bait or will I be harmed if I handle the intact bait without gloves?

The raccoon is easily recognized by its black facemask and ringed tail. The mask helps reduce glare while aiding in camouflage and may enhance night vision. The tail is used as fat storage, for balance when climbing and as a brace when sitting up. Raccoon fur is long and dense. Adults may get as big as 40 inches in length (including the tail) and weigh up to 40 pounds. Their average lifespan in the wild is anywhere from 5 to 8 years. The greatest mortality occurs during the first two years of life – the principal cause of which is man. Adult males tend to be solitary; matriarchal family groups are quite social and will feed and den together into the fall. Other raccoons will defer to a female with babies in feeding situations. The home range of an adult male is about one mile in diameter, although is expands in size during the breeding season. Adult females and their young inhabit smaller areas. A raccoon uses several dens within its home range. Babies will stay with the mother close to a year. Females give birth to an average litter of 3-4 babies each Spring. Raccoons do not hibernate, but they do go through a period of decreased activity during the winter which is also their mating season.

Rabies
Rabies in a viral infection of the nervous system that may affect almost any warm-blooded animal. This disease is present in many wild animal populations in Texas, especially skunks, bats, coyotes, and foxes. Man is usually exposed to rabies by direct contact (bites) with rabid wildlife or, more commonly, by contact with dogs or cats which have acquired the infection from rabid wildlife.
Although rabies is almost always fatal, vaccination is highly effective in preventing it. Control of rabies depends on public awareness of the signs and hazards of the disease, stringent enforcement of animal control regulations, and upon immunization of dogs and cats.
Animal Bites
Injuries to humans by biting animals are a significant public health problem in Texas; more people are affected by animal bites, especially dog bites, than by any other zoonotic disease. Serious injury, viral and bacterial infections, psychological trauma, and even death can be complications of animal bites.
The number of animal bites can be reduced if the public practices responsible pet ownership, by controlling stray animals, and by enforcement of animal control laws and ordinances. Young children are especially vulnerable to animal bites and should be properly protected.
