Peter Collins - Managing Director
Peter Collins first joined Team Lotus in 1978, having emigrated from Australia at the beginning of that year to pursue a career in motor racing. His dedication was rewarded when he was offered the position of assistant competitions manager by Colin Chapman. Peter soon progressed to Team Manager and persuaded Chapman to offer a testing opportunity to Nigel Mansell, at the time thought of as a racing driver of unknown talent. Thereafter he has developed an enviable reputation as a spotter of fresh talent and a man of vision and still maintains a close watch on the formulae leading to F1. Peter is one of the few in recent years to offer a Formula One seat to a driver graduating from British Formula Three, this enabling Mika Hakkinen to bypass Formula 3000, the usual route into Formula One. Following a spell as Team Manager at Williams, Peter moved to fill a more responsible role setting up the new Benetton Team. In his second year Peter introduced Gerhard Berger to the front of the Grand Prix grids, giving Benetton their first Grand Prix victory with Gerhard at Mexico. He also gave Johnny Herbert his first Formula One contract while still recovering from injuries sustained during a Formula 3000 racing accident at Brands Hatch. At the time many felt Herbert's career was over, but Peter did not lose faith in Johnny's ability and confirmed his opinion by offering him a Formula One contract for 1988, whilst Herbert was still recovering from his accident.

State Affiliations
Getting to the track is half the battle (and for this particular component, anywhere from 2% to 5% of your total team points) in big-league motor sports. Just like major and minor sponsors, the state affiliation you choose for your team will either help you or hurt you, and in a very tight championship season points race, your decision may spell the difference between winning and losing. How It Works
The cost associated with the state affiliation you choose is related to the marketing costs that your team incurs in registering your team, complying with local laws and regulations, and in participating in programs specific to the state you choose. In return, your team receives access to technology, products, and marketing programs from that state program. The cost you pay to register your team with a specific state is a season-long cost. It is possible to change your affiliation mid-season; however, you'll incur the entire registration cost to do this. Because of the cost penalty involved, its rare for a team to change its state affiliation mid-season. Note that Indy Racing is a truly international sport, with drivers from five different nations competing. But because the majority of drivers are from the USA, we offer separate state affiliations as well as non-American country affiliations. For simplicity, all these are referred to as "State" affiliation.

    EXEMPLAR ACTIVATION AND INTERPERSONAL BEHAVIOR
    Luigi Castelli
    Università di Padova Cristina Zogmaister
    Università di Padova Luciano Arcuri
Università di Padova ABSTRACT This study investigates the effects of exemplar activation on the verbal responses of participants. Two-hundred people were sent a clearly miss-addressed e-mail message. The name of the sender was manipulated so that he could have the same name as a famous positive exemplar or as a famous negative exemplar. Replies (15%) showed no effect on the number of responses. However, effects emerged on the content of the responses. Overall, participants were much more friendly when the sender had the same name as a positive exemplar. Thus, it is demonstrated that assimilation effects might occur when a social target shares some irrelevant feature (i.e., the name) with a famous exemplar. Results are consistent with recent models that underlie the importance of exemplar activation on social perception and behavior.
INTRODUCTION Once the pervasive nature of the effects of person-based representations on information processing are demonstrated, the following logical step has been to investigate the effects of exemplar activation on actual behavior (Dijksterhuis et al. 1998; Herr 1986; Lewicki 1985, 1986; Macrae et al. 1998, Study 4). For instance, Macrae and his colleagues demonstrated that the subtle activation of a person-based representation influences the performance in an ostensibly unrelated task. Participants were faster in reading words when the words were presented as part of the "Schumacher Word Reading Test" rather than of the "Shimuhuru Word Reading Test". This result is interpreted as the effect of the activation of the famous Formula One motor-racing driver.

One of the events to fall victim of the infamous FISA-FOCA power struggle, the 1981 South African GP was officially not an F1 race. In fact, it was probably the last Formula Libre race ever. So technically, it wasn't even a non-championship F1 event since the cars present did not conform to the new-for-1981 F1 rules prohibiting the use of skirts. This decision generated serious problems in Johannesburg. The organizers had started promoting the race, printing and distributing posters with the original date, while event sponsor Nashua had also signed on for February 7. Furthermore, the South Africans claimed, the April date could lead to a meteorological debacle that would have been similar to the spectator mudwrestling match at the 2000 British GP. We should not forget that April is the Southern-hemisphere equivalent of October in the northern part of the world, meaning that weather conditions could well be less than favourable. On top of that, Kyalami Enterprises - the new company that managed the track - had signed a contract with FOCA for the specific date of February 7!

Only now, with the FIA still embroiled in a war of words with the European Commission over their supposed F1 monopoly, is the world motorsport authority comtemplating to abandon Europe for sunnier regions of the world that possess more common sense and healthier wallets. It would be a drastic move that would create a stark contrast with the emphasis on Europe the leading championships of the world have had ever since the dawn of motor sports. Before the war the greatest championship up until that time was the AIACR European Championship that ran between 1935 and 1939 while after the war the World Championship has always concentrated around a long European summer season. By and large, what is called the FIA F1 World Championship has been a northern-hemisphere plaything.

    Importance of Advertising
During the last few years, with the worldwide adoption of the Internet, e-commerce opportunities and simplicity of use have become household standards. The power of a simple graphic image, somewhere on-line, has grown to be an ever so powerful tool. Today, it is more important than ever to provide catchy, eye popping advertisements designed for a particular demographic niche. On the Internet, it is exceptionally important to place advertisements in the proper location with the correct focus. Rather than spending time throwing your advertisements on random pages in cyberspace, here is an opportunity to help your company reach your targeted motor sports audience with very little work, research, or capital.

The Bookworm Critique "Juan Manuel Fangio:
    Motor Racing's Grand Master"
    By Karl Ludvigsen.
    Published by Haynes.
    by Mark Glendenning,
    Australia
Juan Manuel Fangio was arguably the greatest talent to slide in behind the steering wheel in the history of the sport. His race record is almost freakish - 200 starts netted the stocky Argentine driver 147 placed finishes, including 78 victories. Along the way, he collected no less than five world championships; a record that will probably never be surpassed. Fangio was also among motor racing's most effective ambassadors, as demonstrated by the fact that he remains a worldwide household name despite having retired more than forty years ago. Released last year, this book is the third in a series that previously explored the careers of Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart. I have not yet had the opportunity to read the two earlier books, however having just finished this one I can safely say that this is a situation that I'll be making every effort to rectify as soon as possible. Driver biographies tend to vary in quality to a greater extent than any other category of motorsport books (except, perhaps, officially approved team biographies), but this one delivers the goods in fine style from beginning to end. The definition of the term 'biography' has become increasingly flexible over the years, and this book reflects the ways that these kinds of books are changing. It must be difficult to write about an individual like Fangio - his life and career have already been exhaustively documented, and coming up with new ways to explore such a driver would not be an easy task. In this case, the book is not an exhaustive account of Fangio's life, but it is clear from the outset that this is not really the author's intention.

The Bookworm Critique "DRIVE TO WIN:
    THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE
    TO RACE DRIVING"

by Carroll Smith ; Published by Carroll Smith Consulting, Inc by Mark Glendenning,
    Australia
Books that address the art of driving a racing car are nothing new. These kinds of publications are probably unique amongst the various genres of motorsport writing in that it is difficult to write a really good manual on racing unless you are in a position of some authority on the subject. Amongst those that have produced such works in the past are Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Emerson Fittipaldi, Niki Lauda, and Denis Jenkinson. Guys that know what they're talking about, in other words. What sets this offering by Carroll Smith apart from the others is the basic approach. Traditionally, racing manuals have been written from the driver's point of view. 'Drive to Win', though, looks at the role and requirements of the driver from a variety of perspectives, particularly those of the race engineer and team manager. For sure, concepts such as racing lines are dealt with to some extent, but for the most part they are not examined in any great depth. As Smith himself indicates, this particular territory has already been very thoroughly covered in the past. Actually, the author goes one step further than merely pointing out that a great deal of literature already exists on that aspect of racing, and provides the reader with a list of what he considers to be the best works on the subject (along with a recommendation that these books be read before embarking upon 'Drive to Win').

Express Information at the State Library
The former Business Information Unit at the State Library has a new, expanded identity, and is now known as Express Information. For a fee, the staff in this section can complete research projects using the resources of the State Library and some commercial databases.
Express Information is now no longer operating a free telephone reference service. All basic business enquiries should be referred to Vision, or the public telephone enquiry number of 9669 9824.
If you have a library patron who needs research done quickly, and is prepared to pay, Express Information can be contacted on 9669 9845, or email info@expressinfo.com.au
