Reports for the period 1 October to 31 December 2001
Paul Milne, Secretary IRBC January
The first days of the new year always encourage bird listers to open their account for the year by seeing as many bird species as possible. Of course, this often results in some good rarity records. The month opened with news of a Stone Curlew at Timoleague, Co Cork, which is highly unusual - though not unprecedented - in winter, and it seemed to follow a pattern where many 'summer' visitors were recorded in the winter of 2001-02. Perhaps this has something to do with global warming?
Also early in January, there appears to have been an influx of Ring-necked Ducks, with reports of several from Cork and singles from Westmeath, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Donegal, Kerry, Wexford, Clare and Mayo. Other American ducks were an American Wigeon at Rogerstown and three at Timoleague; Green-winged Teals (now elevated to species status) in Kerry, Dublin, Antrim, Down, Cork and Wexford; Surf Scoters at Waterville, Co Kerry, Ballyvourney, Co Waterford, and Murvagh, Co Donegal - where a total of five were seen; and a Lesser Scaup at Lough Neagh.
Numbers of Black-throated Divers seem to have been lower than in recent years, with 13 the maximum recorded from Galway Bay during the month, and scattered reports of single birds from Dun Laoghaire, Strangford Lough, Donegal Bay and Dursey Island, although three together were seen off Helvick Head, Co Waterford. Similarly, numbers of rare grebes were also down on previous years: only one Red-necked Grebe was reported, from Castlegregory, Co Kerry; two Black-necked Grebes at the usual haunt near Cobh; and isolated reports of Slavonian Grebes from around the coast, but one inland at the Gearagh, Co Cork.

Birders now generate many of today's data on species' distributions and field-identification aspects of North American ornithology. Most professional ornithologists recognize that the large volume of data generated by birders, especially that involving extralimital records, cannot and should not be ignored just because most of it is not based on specimen evidence. There has been considerable debate, however, over what sorts of other documentation are acceptable. In recent years, rare-bird committees (RBCs) have been formed in most states, provinces, and many foreign countries (Roberson 1990) to help bridge the gap between specimen and non-specimen records. RBCs are composed of experienced amateur and professional ornithologists. The RBC process includes acquisition and protection of rare-bird documentation, evaluation by a panel of knowledgeable peers, and publication of proceedings. Many RBCs that must limit the volume of records they receive (or be overwhelmed) compile a

Preparing for Field Observations Look Beyond Field Marks Cameras and Tape Recorders for the Field Photographs Photographs provide the best means for birders to provide tangible proof of a bird's occurrence. You need not be a professional photographer to take recognizable pictures of a bird, nor do photos have to be of publication quality to serve as documentation. Even distant, blurry, or poorly exposed images may be useful in identifying a bird or providing support that the identification was correct. Many such examples have been published in American Birds (see also Roberson 1980).

VARCOM was conceived in the fall of 1986 and was initiated with hopes of achieving three specific goals and these were to: (from bylaws section II) A. Maintain the official list of Virginia birds . Publish annual updates of this list in the VSO journal, The Raven, or in the VSO Newsletter. B. Validate documentation of birds from the State of Virginia and adjacent ocean. "Adjacent ocean" is defined as that area bounded on the north by latitude 38ø02'00", on the south by latitude 36ø33'05, and on the east by all points 200 statute miles from the nearest point on the Virginia coastline." C. Serve as the repository for all documentation of the occurrence, status, and distribution of Virginia birds.

32. Documenting Unusual Or Rare Birds
in a written description see the ‘hitlist’ below or download our rare bird report Forlongstaying, really unusual birds that are well seen by many people
http://www.ecoventures-travel.com/vso/VARCOM/documenting_unusual_or_rare_bird.ht
If you have seen a bird you believe is unusual take a look at the review list to see if it is listed there. If so we would be glad to archive any documentation you might have if the bird was found anywhere within the area noted. If it is not listed on the review list OR the state list then it may be new to the state and we would especially appreciate receiving any photos, video or audio recordings and/or any written description you could provide us. Contact secretary Sue Heath at: sheath@erols.com If you are unsure or curious what kind of information to include in a written description see the ‘hitlist’ below or download our rare bird report form ‘Hitlist’ of helpful information to include in a written description
Your name and contact information.
The species you are reporting and the number of individuals of that species.
The location of the sighting, the weather and lighting and your distance from the bird(s).
The names of any other observers that also saw the bird(s).
Any field notes (or copies of them) if you were able to take them at the time of the sighting.
A physical description of the bird. We encourage observers to write as detailed a physical description as possible including: the bird’s size (an approximation or compared to another nearby bird), shape, structure, overall plumage, and the age or sex of the bird(s) if possible. Often several paragraphs are necessary to adequately describe a species, but sometimes extremely detailed reports are not possible or even necessary. We would suggest that people always include as many details as they can in any description.

SPECIAL REPORTS Investor's Centre Outsourcing Special NI_AD('BottomLeft'); Country Life March 01, 2003 Look out, here comes a stag party James Owen Deer are on the rampage and putting rare birds at risk The march of red deer in upland Scotland has been matched by roe deer in lowland England. The roe deer, extinct in England and Wales 200 years ago, now numbers about 700,000. The sight of a big roe buck leaping across farmland thrills the heart. We are glad for its wild spirit, unfettered by hedges, fences and roads. Unfortunately its freedom is increasingly at the expense of other plants and animals. This spring the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the British Trust for Ornithology will begin monitoring birds in 350 woods. The study follows startling declines in many woodland species. Since the 1970s willow tit numbers have fallen 78 per cent, woodcock by 74 per cent, and song thrushes by more than half. Deer can change a wood drastically. They nibble back ash, bramble, hazel, honeysuckle and sallow, leaving less palatable species to flourish. They eat shoots and saplings, so preventing woodland from regenerating. Gradually they reduce the plant variety which is crucial for the diversity of other woodland wildlife.

There are fewer than 1,000 black-faced spoonbills worldwide (Image: John Holmes/BirdLife)
By Alex Kirby
BBC News Online environment correspondent Dangerously high numbers of one of the world's rarest and most spectacular birds have died from disease in the last month. An outbreak of avian botulism has killed 71 black-faced spoonbills in Taiwan since 9 December 2002. This is more than 7% of the world population of 969 birds, according to BirdLife International. The higher than usual winter temperatures that appear to have triggered the outbreak seem to be consistent with anticipated climate change patterns
BirdLife International
The outbreak follows a spell of unusually warm winter weather, and ornithologists think similar incidents could become common. Avian botulism is caused by a water-soluble toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum (in this case, type C). It is a potent neurotoxin.
