Rare peregrine falcon chicks are at risk
Surveillance cameras have been installed in trees in England's Peak District to protect rare birds of prey from persecution. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds says 20 of the birds were lost in just one part of Derbyshire last year. It suspects someone is deliberately targeting them. Cameras with night-sights will be used to protect goshawks and peregrine falcons in the Derwent Valley, and for the first time the public will be able to watch the images live. Systematic destruction Mark Thomas from the RSPB said: "We need the public to see how fabulous these birds are. "Seven nests were lost last year." "The whole nest is being removed. Somebody is systematically trying to rid the valley of them," he added. The nests have been rebuilt and both covert and overt cameras are in use 24 hours a day. When the base of a conifer tree is approached, a sensor activates both a camera and a video recorder.

No love nest for rare birds
World's most endangered bird puts home comforts before sex.
9 May 2002 JOHN WHITFIELD One of the last three po'ouli on earth. An attempt to bring together a pair of the world's rarest bird has failed. The female headed home without meeting her intended mate. There are only three po'ouli ( Melamprosops phaeosoma ) left - two females and one male. The finch-like birds live in a forest reserve on the Hawaiian island of Maui. But their home ranges do not overlap, stunting the birds' love lives. After a month of trying, conservation biologist Jim Groombridge and his colleagues caught one of the females - the male eluded them. The researchers released her in the male's home range at dusk. But by the middle of the next day, she was on her way home, apparently without having encountered the male. "It's obviously disappointing," says Groombridge, who heads the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project. "But it came as no surprise - we're very pleased it went as well as it did." The island's rugged terrain, strong winds and high rainfall hindered the operation. The knowledge gained in the attempt will be vital to future conservation efforts, says Groombridge. The female po'ouli fed and behaved normally in captivity. A radio tag fitted to the bird also allowed the team to track her movements for ten days.

County Hotline Birds (Oregon)
Admittedly, some species may occur more often than would be implied by the number of records. Accuracy is limited by how well areas have been covered, and whether or not I have been provided information about these species. I welcome any and all information that will result in updating and clarifying the status of these county rarities. Review species are NOT listed. It is assumed that these species, rare anywhere in the state, will be considered rare regardless of location, and it is hoped they will be documented and reported to the Oregon Birds Records Committee. How should you use these lists? At the very least report any rare species to other birders that you know have an interest in the county. Record the date and exact location where the species has been found, and write down a description of the bird (or better yet, photograph it). In addition, please provide me your records by clicking [here] to access the report form or send them to me at the address below. I am interested in past records as well as new records of these countywide rarities. I will update the lists as new information becomes available. Craig Miller

Rare Bird Archives: About Rare Birds FeederWatchers are encouraged to submit a Rare Bird Form when they see a bird that is out of its typical range in winter. Each Rare Bird Form is reviewed by Lab staff. The report is posted on our charts if the bird is identified with a reasonable degree of certainty and is considered rare or unusual at that location in winter. Lab staff use all accompanying information to identify the birds in each report, but are unable to make positive identifications unless the report is accompanied by photos, sketches, or videotapes.
If you sent in a rare bird form but do not see your bird listed on this site, it doesn't mean your sighting isn't interesting to us. It could mean that we didn't have enough documentation to confirm the bird's identity or that a winter sighting in your area is not considered unusual. All rare bird forms, whether they are posted on this site or not, are kept on file. 2002 Express written permission required for use of images or text on these pages.

This article was originally published by the American Birding Association in Birding , June 1992, Vol. 24: Number 3, pp:145-159.
Sketches are helpful to rare-bird documentation. Even the crudest of drawings by individuals professing little or no artistic abilities can later be an integral part of the record. This Fork-tailed Flycatcher ( Tyrannus savana ) was seen at Ricardo, Kleberg County, Texas, in late December 1988.
Preparing for Field Observations Look Beyond Field Marks Size nevertheless can be determined fairly accurately from a photograph of a bird next to some object that can be measured. Louisiana's first Great Black backed Gull (Larus mariyius, LBRC no.82-5) was photographed on a pier piling (Figure 3). To determine the size of the gull, one of the observers subsequently swam out to the piling and measured its diameter. This allowed a fairly exact calculation of the bird's size to confirm identification. A more precise measurement was that obtained for the first record of Green Violet-ear (Colibri thalassinus) from Arkansas. The bird was photographed at a hummingbird feeder (American Birds 1986, 40:128). The bird's bill length was obtained by measuring a plastic "flower" on the feeder and then extrapolating to determine a value for the bill. The measurement was able to clinch the identification of Green Violet-ear, separating it from the very similar, but distinctly larger, Sparkling Violet-ear (C. coruscans).
