Book Series: BOSTON STUDIES IN THE PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE Volume 162
An outstanding feature of this book is the broad range of the contributors, drawn from Europe, the Middle East and North America, testifying both to the range of Professor Agassi's interests and the geographical spread of his influence.
Most contributors use Agassi's ideas as a springboard to engage in debate on issues, or offer a contribution in an area that interests him. In this volume contributors consider such questions as Agassi's philosophy of education, in practice as well as in theory; the impact of psychologism in philosophy; the origins of critical rationalism in the Bible; the debates in economics stimulated by the work of Popper and Agassi, and many other topics. Besides the special topics, the reader gains some sense of the fruitfulness of critical rationalism in the hands of Agassi's friends and colleagues.

A Priori Knowledge
Asst. Prof James Pryor
Dept. of Philosophy
Course Description
This seminar will survey recent work on a priori knowledge, focusing on what it is and whether we have any. We'll look at (i) the positivists' attempts to account for a priori knowledge in terms of analyticity; (ii) Quine's attacks on the notion of analyticity; and (iii) new forms of rationalism that appeared in the 1980s. We'll also look at (iv) objections to rationalism stemming from naturalist views in epistemology and the philosophy of mind. If time permits (which it probably won't) we will explore (v) the connections between Kripke's and Putnam's work on reference and the epistemic status of claims like "The standard meter is 1 meter long," and "I am not a brain in a vat." This seminar is aimed at graduate students in philosophy. Others with an appropriate background may also be permitted to attend; please speak to me individually. There will be only a few readings, but we will be scrutinizing them closely and at length. I want the seminar to be driven primarily by group discussion, so it is very important for you to have read and thought about these readings before our meetings. I will sometimes ask members of the seminar to give a brief presentation of the readings, to start off our discussion.

Rationalism, Freethinking and Prospects of Mukto-mona [Part - I] By : Avijit Roy E-mail: avijitroy1@yahoo.com There are hundreds of evidence of rational thoughts in our ancient purans. The counter part term of theism in Indian Philosophy is Nastikata or Nastibad (disbelieving in God, the creator). This is also identical with Karmanam - denying the consequences of work. Nastikata or atheism, as a philosophy was developed by Dhisan before Gautam Budha . According to him the Universe exists, but not God, the creator; only eternal entity is the matter, and matter consists of four elements: earth, water, energy and air. The creation of life is a specific process of nature and it evolves out of the composite composition of four elements. With death all ends. Perception is the only direct proof of existence. In Indian mythology and purans, Brihospoti is considered as the preceptor of all gods (Devguru) . He was one of the prominent authors of Rikvedas and the first Rational Atheist among the Aryans. Some scholars think that he was, most probably, the first Atheist in the world . Brihoshopti is considered as the spiritual master (guru) of the charvaka philosophy. The alternative name of this philosophy is

Philosophy Level 2 core course. Lecturer: Dr. Kath Renark Jones. Room W325. E-mail: k.jones@gre.ac.uk Tel: ext. 8977 Outline of the Course Descartes is perhaps the most well known philosopher in the Western tradition and is often referred to as ‘the father of modern thought’. In the first part of this course, we will be studying Descartes most famous text, the Meditations . In lectures and seminars we will examine and critically analyse, through a close textual reading, the arguments presented in this great work. We will be paying particular attention to those issues and themes having had the greatest influence upon post-Cartesian philosophical thinking, namely:
  • Reason and the Method of Doubt The Cogito The role of God The separation and interaction of Mind and Body
In the second part of the course we will turn our attention to recent debates reflecting upon some of these themes in Descartes work. In particular, we will look at the nature and limits of reason in the Cartesian tradition, which has, arguably, dominated philosophy since the writing of the Meditations. Method of Assessment Coursework essay: 50%. 90 minute examination: 50%.

This paper was originally presented as part of a session organized by Prof. Vitalij Keis at a conference of the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages in Chicago (1982); and subsequently published in the Ukrainian literary journal Suchasnist' (1988 (No. 5)) in a Ukrainian translation done by Prof. Keis.
Chyzhevs'kyi's most comprehensive work on philosophy in Ukraine is his Outlines of the History of Philosophy in Ukraine , published in 1931. When I first read it, I became rather bewildered. There is a chapter devoted to Mykola Hohol' (Gogol) and another to the trio of Pantelejmon Kulish, Mykola Kostomarov and Taras Shevchenko. Now, I asked myself, why is it that such seemingly unphilosophical writers are given extensive treatment, while other writers and philosophers are barely mentioned? What do Hohol', Kulish, Kostomarov and Shevchenko have in common to warrant their inclusion in a history of philosophy? The only thing they appear to share approximating what I consider to be philosophy is a world-view, an ideology, a Weltanschauung I use these words synonymously. Their

The picture to the left is Raphael's famous depiction of classical Greek philosophy. These thinkers have greatly influenced many cultures throughout history, but they are neither the beginning nor the end of all philosophy. What would a contemporary "School of Athens" look like? What would take place there? What is philosophy's practical role in our lives?
At its best, contemporary philosophy is not simply a matter of restating and debating classical questions. It is an interdisciplinary practice that draws on the strengths of many diverse communities of inquiry in an effort to cultivate a very general, yet also very situational and particular understanding of the world. With this in mind, please enjoy the following exploration of philosophy. School of Athens

A History of Philosophy , Frank Thilly, 1914, 30 revised edition – Ledger Wood, 1957, has the virtues of brevity and impartiality [attempt to understand each system in its integrity; to formulate the tacit and implicit basic assumptions of each system: allowing the primary criticism to be the criticisms made by other – contemporary and later – philosophers. Often, the tacit assumptions are brought out by later philosophers of the same movement or tradition]. This history is based in Thilly’s work, re-thought and adapted to my understanding. Thilly holds the view that the only complete systems of thought are Western. I wish to briefly examine possible bases of the claim. The claim is decomposable into two parts and the first is that the Western tradition contains complete systems of thought. What does

RATIONALISM
René Descartes was a French philosopher, scientist, and mathematician. He is considered as the father of modern philosophy. His major works include Discourse on Method Meditations on First Philosophy (1641), and Principles of Philosophy (1644). His philosophy, also known as Cartesianism, describes a dualistic universe that is a world consisting of two basic substances, matter and spirit. Matter includes everything in the physical universe and spirit consists of the human mind. His belief is that both of these substances can exist independently of each other. In proving his theory, he introduced the Latin phrase cogito ergo sum , meaning I think, therefore I am.
Descartes' philosophy was not widely accepted at first. "In France and the Low Countries, Catholic and Protestant clerics combated the new teaching" (Tsanoff). The problem was that Descartes proposed the rejection of authority and tradition, and many people viewed this as the rejection of ethics and religion. "It was said that his views led to atheism" (Russell). Descartes was aware of this possible conflict, so he tried to prevent the Catholic Church from becoming his enemy. He attempted to convince the Church that his philosophy could actually be compatible with its theology. The other main factor affecting the acceptance of Descartes' philosophy was the period of history in which he lived. Descartes was writing in a time when scientists and philosophers started to develop theories that contrasted with medieval thought. This was around the time that Galileo suffered condemnation because of his theories about the universe. Galileo's condemnation greatly affected Descartes' willingness to express his own views. Fearing that he too would be persecuted, Descartes abandoned the book he was working on

The general characteristics of this [conservative] disposition are not difficult to discern, although they have often been mistaken. They centre upon a propensity to use and to enjoy what is available rather than to wish for or to look for something else; to delight in what is present rather than what was or what may be . . . an appropriate gratefulness for what is available, and consequently the acknowledgment of a gift or an inheritance from the past.
Michael Oakeshott On Being Conservative
It is a curious coincidence that two of the greatest British philosophers of the 20th Century are each known primarily for just one essayIsaiah Berlin for The Hedgehog and The Fox and Michael Oakeshott for Rationalism in Politics . That's neither to denigrate their other writings nor to diminish the two remarkable essays, but it is odd.
Michael Oakeshott followed in the footsteps of a long line of English skeptics, the greatest of whom was probably David Hume. In
