In the Sea
"The reading programme is the language, the life of the classroom." Ask the children to reread the story In the Sea . They suggest alternative verbs for lives (e.g. swims, eats, dives) and write a sentence.
A whale in the sea.
Children illustrate their sentence showing the sea creature and its movement. Create a variety of stimulating reading experiences by reading and listening to stories on audio cassettes, computers and other audio-visual equipment. Create a drama around a story either by reinacting or developing a play to present to the class. Read other books, both fiction and non-fiction, related to the sea.
Ask children to write short poems about one of the creatures from the sea. Ask children to work in pairs. One child rereads the story and the other child asks the question "What lives in the sea" as each page is turned. Read a variety of poems about the same subject as In the Sea to build a class anthology.

"Remember to read the Big Book daily" KS1 Shared Reading Lesson Plans Shared Reading is a whole class reading time often used to help individual children read books that would be too challenging for them to read independently. You can help the children with skills for word level, sentence level and text level work through these lessons. Be selective. Choose only those that help children to read better. Remember that reading and reading enjoyment is about understanding the text. When focusing on skills, remember to retain the sense of the whole book so that children understand what the story means. Above all, children should enjoy the story! Go to Class Organisation to prepare for the lesson. To see a 5-Day Shared Reading Lesson Plan, click here At the end of the lesson plan for reading and writing there is a list of the skills covered. You can click on any skill and access more activities using the skill. Click on your chosen book to start that lesson plan.
