About Us Adult Learners Success Stories ... Forms
Literacy Volunteers is a nonprofit organization which trains men and women to tutor adults free of charge on a one-to-one basis. You can help adults who want to learn to read or who want to learn English as a second language.

One new and exciting change on the near horizon is the impending merger with Laubach Literacy International. Frank Laubach, a missionary to the Philippines and other Asian nations, started his literacy program in 1955, while Ruth Colvin started Literacy Volunteers in 1962. Interestingly, both programs were launched in Syracuse, New York and had faith-based backgrounds. Through the years, Laubach Literacy International experienced greater growth in the western United States and internationally, while Literacy Volunteers of America reaches more people in the eastern U.S. While training techniques have differed, both programs ultimately have the same goal…assist those in our communities to read and speak English to reach their personal goals. Pooling resources makes sense as educational programs and non-profit organizations seek to make the most efficient use of available monies and volunteers. Representatives from both organizations have served as consultants for advertising, planning, and administrative decisions and both programs have extensively researched this merger. We expect a name change by early 2002 and you will receive additional information as it becomes available to us.

County offers tutoring to help adults
Reading: About 47 percent of county residents have trouble
By Pamela Isaacson Staff writer Tutor Mary Schmid places purple and yellow leaves onto pieces of construction paper. She takes notes as Lori Neely, 31, describes the colors and patterns she sees. "I'll write her responses down and make a lesson plan out of the words," Schmid said. Since last December, Neely, 31, has been working with Schmid on reading, writing, math and communication skills so Neely can reach her goals. Neely represents about half of Richmond's adult population who struggle with reading, according to the 1992 National Adult Literacy Survey. The survey showed about 47 percent of Wayne County's adults have difficulty reading.

A banner hanging above Reuben Hubbard's desk at Bakersfield Adult School describes his motto in three words: "Teaching is Learning." That saying will be tested this summer when Hubbard's tutoring program, now in its second year, expands to include first- through sixth-grade students. The three-week reading camp opened Monday with 23 tutors and 53 children. Hubbard created the program last year, pairing his adult students with first- and second-graders from Mount Vernon and Roosevelt elementary schools. He had previously arranged for his English as a Second Language students to go into elementary classrooms and tutor children informally. Community Based English Tutoring funds from Proposition 227, which banned bilingual education statewide in 1998, paid for a structured program with about 40 upper-level ESL students tutoring children one on one last summer. The children were tested before and after participating in last year's summer reading camp, and they all showed improvement, said Virginia Ramirez, last year's summer director.

ROCHELLE RILEY: Nun follows a call to help nonreaders
January 17, 2003 BY ROCHELLE RILEY
FREE PRESS COLUMNIST For Sister Marie Schoenlein, the goal has been the same since 1988: to wipe out adult illiteracy in Detroit. That year, she presented a plan to the Catholic Archdiocese and major religious superiors to tutor adults who could not read, thus improving their lives, the lives of their children and the lives of their community. "We had so many retired sisters who would not want to be in a classroom, but would be energized by that kind of work," Schoenlein said. Her plan became the Dominican Literacy Center, which has trained nearly 2,500 volunteers to give the gift of reading to more than 2,400 adults, aged 19 to 91. Some adults, who entered unable to recognize words, left a year later able to read signs, directions, menus and job applications. Others have learned to handle budgets and read bank statements. Still others could prepare for citizenship tests. The center's 14 years of service will be honored Monday when Schoenlein receives a Martin Luther King Jr. Keep the Dream Alive award.
