Here are some basic points about specific age groups to keep in mind when you are choosing a child's book. BABIES AND TODDLERS Very young children are attracted by brightly colored pictures of simple objects. They are listeners, and respond well to books with simple texts and good rhythms. Wordless books stimulate them both visually and mentally, and encourage them to create their own stories. They are delighted with board books and cloth books, which have the virtue of being practically indestructible. NURSERY SCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN Mother Goose, nursery stories, and other books depicting familiar objects and experiences are enjoyable to children in this age group. These children like listening to slightly complex texts with good rhythm and effective word repetition. They are also coordinated enough to have constructive fun with toy-like books that may pop up, move, or provide other astonishments.

At the 1996 annual meeting and conference, feedback from the membership urged that LPM take a more active stance in public awareness and communication with stakeholders. We embarked on our 10th anniversary year with this mandate firmly in mind. Various means to this end were carried out, in addition to our contractual obligations to perform prescribed projects funded by the National Literacy Secretariat. Accomplishments achieved in our tenth year of service to the community included: 1. Looking under LEARN and Listening to Callers
    2. Linking People to Programs

Through a joint venture with the National Adult Literacy Database and retired operators from the Telephone Pioneers of Manitoba local chapter 50, we created a computerized template for a 1997-98 database of program sites and features. With this tool the provincial A.L.C.E. and LPM staff who answer the LEARN helpline will be able to provide in depth answers about local program features, hours and supports. 3. Resources and Tips for Parents
Tips for helping children get the most out of visiting the library:
    • Visit the library on a regular basis.
Regular visits to the library establish a life long pattern. Your child will learn to regard the library as an important part of his or her life. Get to know the library staff.
Children (and adults) are sometimes shy about asking the librarian for help. They'll be less afraid of approaching a familiar face. Younger children will know where to go for help if they are separated from their adult. Talk to your child about library manners and other rules of using the library.
You know the rules… indoor voices, no running, pick up your toys when you're through playing; don't put books back on the shelves; and so on. But you may have some family rules of your own. Stay with your young children in the children's department and take them with you to explore the other areas of the library.
The "grown ups library" has all of the same things as the children's department. As your child gets older, they'll easily make the transition to using the rest of the library. If you don't see or can't find what you want, ask the librarian.

The book lists below contain suggestions to fit a wide variety of interests typical in middle and high school students. The works include literary classics as well as contemporary works.
