When preparing their preschool age children for later reading, parents usually think of teaching them their ABCs. Inadequate development in other areas can make learning to read much more difficult. Rather than starting in on formal school too early, try some of these suggestions to put your children on the right path early on....
1. Learning the Names of Things
Often before a child begins to talk, around the age of 18 months, they are working on mastering the language by recognizing words and associating them with appropriate people, places and things. While most of this learning can take place quite naturally and without much deliberation on the part of the parents, there are some activities which can enhance this learning. These activities will tend to be fun for little ones and they may enjoy having their own special "school time" each day. Materials: Any or all of the following three types of materials will be useful for this stage.
a) "small objects" - You can find many useful items around the house or at garage sales for this purpose. It should be fairly easy to collect a key, a button, a nail, a bead, small plastic animals and perhaps some dollhouse furniture. for this purpose.
b) flash cards - simple pictures, preferably photographs without excess background (which can be confusing and distracting) work quite well. The Dorling Kindersley flash cards are especially nice because they are simple photographs with a plain white background. Look for pictures of household items, people, animals, plants, buildings, etc. Magazine pictures attached to index cards (double-sided tape is best because it doesn't wrinkle the picture or the card) and covered with contact paper work quite well too.

The ABCs of Justice Court starts reading lab to help teach troubled teens. The Albuquerque Tribune - December 20, 2000 Placido Perez was afraid in second grade afraid to read out loud. Third grade was no different, nor was fourth or fifth. His fear of reading turned to dread, then hate. He hated to read and he hated school. He remembers refusing when his teachers at Armijo Elementary School called on him to read. There was nothing they could do. He wouldn't read. Period. "I couldn't read and I didn't want to sound all stupid," said Perez, 16. Times and reading ability have changed a lot since then for Perez, who recently served as a mentor in the new reading lab at the Juvenile Justice Center. For Perez and other teens in trouble, the lab has been a valuable resource. All of the teens using the facility were sent there by Children's Court judges or other officials in the juvenile justice system. Delinquents are not sentenced to the lab, just encouraged to try it and the hours they spend in the lab are counted as community service, which is required to complete probation.

    The Politics and Culture of Literacy in Georgia, 1800-1920"
    by Bruce Fort Abstract: This study also takes issue with one of the most enduring and demeaning stereotypes of the region: the image of the ignorant Southerner. This reputation has persisted in black and white for generations, as the slouching, mumbling Tom and as the illiterate, spit-drooling cracker. This dissertation traces the roots of this widely held view of Southerners and examines how both the image and the underlying realities came to be. I assess the extent to which Southerners of both races and various classes were engaged in learning. Thus we hear a bookseller speaking of people in rural Georgia "tearing me to pieces" trying to get their hands on his books; we see white children in antebellum Georgia learning to read in makeshift schools; we see slaves reading despite the threat of severe punishment; we see the centrality of reading in defining black freedom; and we see the students of Atlanta University teaching other children the ABCs in the Georgia countryside. Throughout the study, I have sought to weave together public and private narratives of literacy. Alongside stories of battles over public school funding and the suffrage are other stories, stories marked more by private reflection than by public pronouncement. As the study revisits the public discussions about education, it also revisits the parlors and cabin porches where people read and wrote privately, for pleasure and relaxation, for self-improvement, and to stay in touch with distant relatives. As the study examines efforts to institute or to eliminate anti-literacy slave laws, it also revisits brush arbors where black Southerners learned to readfurtively and illegally as slaves, and with open determination after freedom. It looks into tent meetings, editorial offices, schoolrooms and bedrooms, listening for conscious and unconscious expressions of the ways that reading changed peoples' lives.

    Reading is the single most important educational skill your students will learn. Understanding the organization and meaning of text and instruction in both phonics and literature is essential to helping young children read. By understanding the prerequisite skills for reading, teachers can build a solid foundation for their students to learn and succeed in school.
    Create Appreciation of the Written Work
    • Share stories with children and invite them to explore a story's magic.
    • Share informational texts and invite children to wonder about the new ideas presented.
    • Take every opportunity to point out the ways in which reading is essential to the communications of everyday life (e.g., on labels, instructions, and signs)
    Develop Awareness of Printed Language and the Writing System
    • Make sure students know how books are organized. They should be taught the basics about booksthat they are read from left to right and top to bottom, that print may be accompanied by pictures or graphics, that the pages are numbered, and that the purpose of reading is to gain meaning from the text and understand ideas that words convey.
    • Read to children from books with easy-to-read large print. Use stories that have predictable words in the text.

    The National Center to Improve the Tools of Educators
    Each year, thousands of children are identified as having a learning disability, and many more fail in school because of difficulties in learning to read. A new analysis of decades of research about how young children can best learn to read indicates that, in most cases, these difficulties can be prevented, according to the National Center to Improve the Tools of Educators (NCITE), based at the University of Oregon. The results of the synthesis funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) have been released through the Learning to Read, Reading to Learn public awareness campaign.
    The ERIC Clearinghouse on Disabilities and Gifted Education (ERIC EC), its host organization, The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), and the ERIC Clearinghouse on Reading, English, and Communication (ERIC CS) at Indiana University are among the 25 partner organizations that will provide information about this reading research.
    A network of researchers who can act as resources has been established. These researchers can provide technical assistance for schools trying to create an effective reading program for children with learning disabilities. A list of these researchers is also provided.

    Re-learning your ABCs ABC and CPA can be valuable tools when you learn how to use them. All these years the ABCs for me referred to the alphabet, and a CPA was either a Certified Public Accountant or a "cart path assist" for an errant golf shot. However, about five years ago I performed an Activity-Based Costing Analysis (ABC) on a couple of my larger accounts with the assistance of one of my vendors. This was a very basic CPA (Customer Profitability Analysis). Of note were the findings that one of the accounts was clearly profitable and the other clearly unprofitable. Today we do very little business with the account deemed unprofitable at that time. Good decision? Unfortunately, little further effort was made to analyze individual accounts. Some basic assumptions were made about all accounts and I continued macromanaging. I had a sense that 20 percent of our customers provided 80 percent of our profit dollars and that many accounts broke even and lots of accounts were unprofitable. But guided by the 1980s dogma that all growth is good, our company continued on its upward sales pattern. Also, our unprofitable accounts were valuable to our vendors. And you never give up business to the competition, right? Of course, more sales meant more costs with more people and more infrastructure. About a year ago, with life in the distribution business changing at an ever-accelerating pace, our company began to compile more statistics about our business transactions and started posting measurements, largely as an outgrowth of our ISO 9002 certification in March, 1995. With our ISO management team as the driver behind the process, we began to measure telephone calls, in and out; customer order lines, stock and non-stock; vendor order lines, stock and non-stock; customer packing slips and packing slip lines; incoming packages; on-time delivery performance; and the number of deliveries made by our personnel with our vehicles. Honestly, we still couldn't put the information to effective use. Why not?

For most parents, it's one of those warm and fuzzy experiences watching their kids (4 1/2 to 6 years) develop letter recognition which quickly evolves into reading words, sentences, and stories. Suddenly, an entire new world of reading is available for you and your child to explore. You can help your child learn to read or improve reading skills by using the computer and playing these great reading programs on CD-ROMs. But don't forget to take your kids to the library and check out some real books. You should also continue to read stories to your children because I've found that reading aloud is one of the best learning experiences around. Kids can learn to enunciate and pronounce words as well as how to emphasize certain words or sentences by practicing how to be a good listener. Later, you and your family can all take turns reading favorite stories.

    Reader Rabbit's Interactive Reading Journey 2
    My all-time favorite is Reader Rabbit's Interactive Reading Journey 2 , a new reading exploration for kids ages 5 through 8 years. This comprehensive reading program includes a CD-ROM filled with 100 phonics, words, and lessons; 30 printed stories (bound in five books); and a sing-along cassette of Reader Rabbit's favorite songs. This software teaches first-grade reading skills but may be appropriate for younger or older kids, depending on their abilities.
