One of many strange Swedish dishes is "Blodpudding'." Does anybody out there have a good story in reference to this fine piece of traditional Swedish folklore? On one of our Christmas trips to Norrland my American wife had a mouthful and thought it tasted really good until she found out wat it was... ... and then there is surstroemming, palt and poelsa and other weird things. Please share your experiences. Date: Tue, 9 Jun 1998

> "I've never seen a blodpudding,
> I never hope to see one,
> However, I will tell you sir,
> I'd rather decline than eat one." Not only do I like it, but I am planning on buying and consuming some (with lingonsylt) first thing upon arriving in Uppsala in a few weeks! Blodpudding and Isterband are 2 of my guilty pleasures! Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998
From: "Jorun Feller"
To be honest. I sort of like it. I like blodpudding with lingonsylt. Quite good. I just remember it from school and friends houses, we never had this in our house. I think this was because my mother didn't like it. I never did have blodkorv however, or bloodsoup for that matter. And to be honest, it is nothing I am longing for either. Date: Mon, 22 Jun 1998

FISH RECIPES
AS IN 'FISH'
I like fish. And, I have yet to find a bad one. Like Daddy always said about girls, "They're all good." And, most fish are edible. Carp are a delicacy in Europe and the Far East. Mudfish (Grindle to you Southern folks) have firm white flesh and, if the water they come from is not stagnant, a very good flavor. In Korea and Viet Nam, I saw some strange fish cooked in some strange ways. All I tried were surprisingly good. However, the best rule I found was, "If you have to ask what it is, you don't want it." Sort of like the sign at Scroungy Harry's Grill, "You can eat dirt cheap here." And, sometimes you did.
The best fish are those that bite my lure. The 'next best' are those done to a golden brown and served on a platter with a couple of lemon wedges on the side. Here are some of those 'next best'. There some other fish recipes that follow that are done on the grill and on a smoker. They are particularly appropriate if fried foods are your 'no-no'.
YOUR BASIC SOUTHERN FISH FRY
2 cups yellow or white corn meal 1 tblsp garlic salt
1 tsp black pepper peanut oil, 2-3 inches deep

Some Ink Recipes
Claes G Lindblad
on May 21, 1998. I became interested in inks more than 20 years ago, when trying to tame a dip steel pen to behave nicely. All inks available locally were intended for fountain pen use, meaning they were too runny and too thin for proper scribal use. The Persian Recipe - my First Ink Attempt Then I came across an old recipe, once upon a time used by Hassan, a Persian Scribe. It told me to find: Ingredients
  • 500 g water 5 g salt 250 g gum arabic (see note below) 30 g gall apples, grilled and powderized 40 g iron sulphate (a.k.a. copperas or vitriol) 30 g honey 20 g soot for stage 3 (see table at right)
  • Directions
  • Mix the six first ingredients. Leave them on a slow fire for two hours and stir now and then. Then add 20 g soot. Heat it for another hour. Filter and pour into bottles.
  • It sounded thrilling as well as an easy task. Since I was a newbie, I did not know where to find all strange ingredients, in fact, it took me three weeks to scout them down. I started, late one evening. Three hours later the moment of truth arrived - but my concoction did not have the slightest resemblance with ink. Well, it was black, all right, but it behaved much more like a heap of butter, just out from the fridge. There was not a chance in the world to 'filter' it through anything, I had to scoop it up with a knife to transport it to a wide-mouthed container with a close-fitting lid. What did I do Wrong?

    Pregnant
My best friend loves to make sandwiches with barbecue sauce, pickles and processed cheese. Sometimes she adds potato chips.
Also, she has a new sandwich: meatballs with barbecue sauce and Miracle Whip.
Incidentally, she's pregnant. She wasn't for the first one tho, so there's no excuse!!
    Potted Meat Salad
I think this is great. My wife thinks it's gross. I call it potted meat salad.
Take one can of potted meat.
Add a dollop mayo. Add some chopped onions. A little mustard. As many sweet pickles as you want. A dash of salt. A sprinkle of pepper. Mix together and serve on bread or buns, um um good!! This is something my cousin and I made up and ate regularly when we were kids ... a LONG time ago ... and occasionally still eat it. Try it, you'll like it. PEANUT BUTTER AND GARDINEIRA (Vegetables in olive oil) SANDWICHES Spread peanut butter (I prefer crunchy, but any kind can be used) thickly on one slice of bread. Top with plenty of hot or mild gardineira (I prefer Hot. Gardeneira is peppers and other vegetables packed in olive oil; usually found in the vegetable or ethnic section of the supermarket). Spread a little of the olive oil on another slice of bread. Flatten the sandwich to hold the ingredients in and ENJOY! Angela For an added treat, add a slice of real cheddar cheese. Mmmmmmmm yummy. =O)

    Butter Beans
When I was a little girl my favorite sandwich was butterbean. My mother said people at school would laugh at me but it is so good it was worth it. Cook big speckled butter beans the night before. Mix them with chili sause to make a paste. Place this between two pieces of white bread. It is delicious. Also my grand daughter loves to put mustard on two pieces of white bread and fill it with potatoe chips. OH NO!
Always Lola I loved your website and was both pleased and amazed to find several mentions of my favorite sandwich, peanut butter and mayonnaise. As was mentioned by a couple of your contributors, my mother used to make this treat for me. I was almost dumbfounded a couple of years ago when my neighbor Greg, across the street asked me If I'd ever tried peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches. He was equally stunned when I replied that they were one of my favorites. His wife, Marie now thinks that there are two deranged people in the neighborhood. Keep up the good work! Regards

Dahomey was an African kingdom (part of the region called the "Slave Coast") that flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries in what is now Benin. The modern nation of Benin was known as Dahomey in the early 1970's when this recipe was published. What you need

    What you do
    • Cut the fish crosswise, into two-inch sections. Mix the flour, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Roll the fish in the flour mixture.
Heat the oil in a skillet . Cook the fish in the oil, turning it until it is golden brown all over. Remove the fish and set aside. Fry the onions in the skillet for a few minutes. Add the tomatoes. Stir and cook for about ten minutes. Add the fish stock (or water). Reduce heat, cover and simmer for ten minutes more.

I can't eat that strange stuff!" Well, soyfoods are strange no longer. They have quickly become a regular part of many people's diets. And with all the new research showing positive health effects of soyfoods, it behooves the rest of us to make soyfoods a part of our diets, too. I love to tell skeptics that if I can do it, then ANYONE can! I have very basic Midwestern food tastes, yet I've found adding more soyfoods to my eating plan is convenient and tasty. Soyfoods aren't time and labor intensive; in fact, they can be real timesavers for quick and easy meals and snacks.
