This season's vivid retro-Mod shirts may sport a slim cut, French cuffs and Savile Row patterns, but they're the opposite of boardroom button-down. Think Coors' "Guys' Night Out" commercials and you've got the shirttails-out mood. British label Ben Sherman started the skinny-shirt revolution way back in the 1950s and hit icon status in the '60s on the backs of the Beatles, the Who, the Stones and every Mod who ever scootered to Brighton. Now it has found a whole new generation of music-industry fans and achieved cult status all over again. Ask Jan: Hydrox-C is still on hand, with a new manufacturer

Foreign Correspondent's Club of Japan
The Foreign Correspondent's Club was started in 1947 by reporters living in Japan covering the Occupation and General MacArthur . To this day it continues to host visits from cultural and political figures and provide valuable services to journalists working in Japan. Of course, they no longer offer overnight accommodation. And as lively as some of the guests may seem today, it seems the club has known some livelier times. According to one regular, "Shots have been fired on the premises," reports Henry Scott-Stokes, "by a New York Times correspondent." Today, the club is in its third location, in the penthouse of the Yurakacho Denki building. The 20th floor has the restaurant, meeting rooms, a bar/cafe, and a sushi bar. The 19th floor has a library and workroom. The membership is comprised largely of businessmen, mostly Japanese. It can be a great way to meet and socialize with other businessmen. According to the American club model, you can only fraternize there as a member, or a guest of a member. If first heard about the Foreign Correspondent's club flying to Finland.

Promising Trends in
Recent Writing about
American Religion by Jan Shipps Thought for the day: "Many are cold, but few are frozen."
(from the Readers' Digest) In the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century, that is until the 1950s, the virtual reality of a unified culture was coupled with the notion of exceptionalism to make the United States, if not God's New Israel, at least a land of promise. A critically important coupling device that kept the notion of a unified culture and exceptionalism together was a tradition of historical writing that magnified the (Protestant) principle of individual choice, celebrated religious freedom, and practically sanctified the First Amendment. At the same time, these accounts either overtly or covertly assumed election and intimated that however much the nation might, at present, be wandering in the wildernessrecall the Jeremiad traditionthe kingdom of God and the United States would eventually be one and the same. Such historical writing lent itself to generalization and (over) simplification. Hence it is not surprising that the role of religion in the Making of America, to use the title of a popular school history text of many years back, found its way into the school curriculum at almost every level. Religion was not merely as much a part of the story as economics or politics, it was the heart of American history. For generations, moreover, this particular telling of the story withstood challenge. And it did so despite the presence of many who were not themselves religious and some even who were hostile to it. Skepticsit should be rememberedhave been a part of the national scene since the days of Tom Paine without calling into question teaching about the role of religion in the nation's past. They might scoff Mencken-style, but they, too, wholeheartedly accepted the principle that freedom to believe and practiceor not to believe or practicewas a matter of individual choice. How tempting, therefore, to conclude that religion was simply crowded out when the U.S. public became conscious and sensitive to the actuality of diverse cultures clamoring to be heard.

It also includes a few important newspapers and newsmagazines. All of the sites offer free, English-language news. Readers should realize that, like most news sources, the sites listed below can be biased at times. Many are run by the religious bodies whose news they are reporting; others are independent but are intended as tools for evangelization. All news sources, of course, reveal some bias, no matter what the subject; religion news, though, still does not receive adequate coverage from the mainstream media, and so religion news stories are often carried by only one source. (For more about this problem, see Religion and Reporters Starred sites are particularly worth visiting. These are news sites which, drawing from a number of sources, achieve excellence in quantity, quality, and variety.
