All branches of arts have flourished during the past century in Iceland. In the last few decades, the Icelandic film industry has had great success. Literature has a tradition going back to the middle ages. Novelist Mr. Halldór Laxness won the Nobel prize for literature in 1955. Painting started in earnest about 100 years ago and many Icelandic works are exhibited in galleries around the world. The National Theatre, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Icelandic Dance Company and the Opera House all contribute to a rich cultural life. In popular music, Björk has had international success. There are a number of excellent libraries in Iceland, the largest of which is the National and University Library of Iceland. The National Museum of Iceland is the chief body for preservation of antiquities in the country, and by far the oldest. Iceland has a number of other national and local museums.
There are three national newspapers in Iceland as well as a number of local papers. There are five television stations, including a public channel, plus local stations. A number of radio stations operate in Iceland, national and local, public and private. About 1,600 book titles are published every year and upwards of 1,000 periodicals.

Lawrence E. Sullivan Surveying modern methods concerned with the nature and function of religion, this basic course reviews prominent theorists and schools in order to ground key questions about religion and culture. Is religion rooted primarily in a personal quest for meaning or in institutional control of society? Do the order and function of religion operate largely on an unconscious level, like the structures of spoken language? Do myth and symbol point to truth? How can such truths be known and expressed? Are religious texts the best guides to religious meaning, or do actions speak louder than words? Do the origins of religion still shape religious experience and practice today? Are religions similar or different? Is the human being fundamentally intrinsically religious? Open to undergraduates. Offered by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences as Religion 1016. Half course (fall)

Black History in Guelph and Wellington County: Religion and the British Methodist Episcopal Church The church was the most important institution in most Black communities. Church leaders were often spokespersons to the larger community. The denominations were usually Baptist or Methodist. Baptist congregations encouraged a democratic participation by the election of their ministers. Black Methodists, coldly received in White congregations, turned to the African Methodist Episcopal church, which entered the colony from the United States in 1838 and by 1840 had organized an Upper Canada Conference. The Conference was instrumental in supplying the church with ministers and sending bishops occasionally to oversee its work. In 1856, feelings arose that reforms had to take place, and an independent British Methodist Episcopal Church was formed. A British Methodist Episcopal (BME) Church was started in Guelph in 1870, in a frame building on Market Street. Rev. Thomas Jefferson was pastor. The original congregation was comprised of former fugitive slaves from the United States. On September 18, 1880, numerous citizens gathered to witness the laying of the cornerstone of the new stone church on Essex Street.
