Religion on Internet and in Digital Formats
There is wealth of data available on the Internet for religious studies. Almost every major academic institution with Religious Studies program has a home page that lists selected resources and provides links to others. They differ in comprehensiveness, arrangement, and purpose. The resource is rapidly growing and institutional home pages such as this one cannot maintain it current. Consequently, navigation through variety of resources is advisable. In some areas there are centers or persons that make an effort to keep the developments up to date. More To Know About Boarding Schools
University Placement Counseling
Each school has a placement counselor whose job it is to help you in the process of applying to a college or university. This counselor will assist you in choosing several appropriate institutions for application and then will advise you in filling out the application and preparing the essay. In addition, many universities seek strong students from boarding schools and send an admissions representative to visit the campuses each year to speak to students about their programs. This is an opportunity for students to get to know the U.S. university system before they begin making campus visits.
Financial Aid
Some schools do offer financial aid to international students. Financial aid is a reduction in the annual tuition based on the financial need of the family. If you feel that you cannot afford to go to boarding school or summer camp in the U.S.A., contact the schools you are interested in to see if they will award foreign students financial assistance. If so, you will be required to fill out a financial aid application that will help the school determine how much aid you need in order to make it possible for you to attend. Do not be afraid to ask!
Foreign Student Advisors and Orientation
Most schools have a foreign student advisor who is responsible for the well-being of the international students on the campus. These teachers will be sure that the non-English speaking students understand the rules and regulations, get involved in the daily life of the school and that they know from whom to seek help academically, socially and medically. These teachers also often coordinate activities that help international students share their own culture with the rest of the school.

"The study of religion allows the exploration of the most fundamental ideas that shape women's lives.
" -Ann Braude
Director, Women's Studies in Religion Program Women's Studies in Religion Program
Founded in 1973, WSRP was the first program to focus on the interdisciplinary study of women and religion. It is the only program of its kind, focused on research that expands our base of knowledge about women in religion. Well over 100 Research Associates have participated in the Program. Together, they have produced a body of scholarship that has helped transform the study of religion and the theological education of ministers and religious leaders. Their publications challenge long-held assumptions about the meaning of religious scriptures, the presence of women as religious leaders, and the significance of religious teachings and practices. In many cases, their work calls into question the universality of language and methods of past scholarship. In addition to increasing attention to women and gender within the study of religion, the Program promotes awareness of the importance of religion for an understanding of women's situation. Program scholars come from literary studies, anthropology, law, political science, psychology and history, as well as from theology, ethics, biblical criticism, and other fields of religious studies. The program has developed a generation of faculty expert in addressing questions of religion and gender, whose teaching spreads knowledge of the field to students across the country, and to many parts of the world. Together, this community of international scholars provides a crucial resource for religious communities, policy makers, and educational institutions.

What is a Subject Heading?
There are basically two ways to search for information on a topic: using key words from the title or information about the item, and using subject headings (also sometimes referred to as descriptors). While keyword searching relies on the language used by the author, the publisher, or the person writing the abstract or summary, subject headings use a single word or phrase to represent a particular topic or concept. For example, the terms substance abuse chemical dependency , and addiction are all terms used to describe the same concept, but only one of them will be used as the subject heading. This makes subject headings a very powerful way to search for information on a topic, because once you know the subject heading, you can search for everything on the topic regardless of the language used in the title or other information about a book.

The role of books in national development: Bangladesh as a case study by Fazle Rabbi
Director since 1979 of the Bangladesh National Book Centre, Fazle Rabbi has studied book production and marketing in many countries. After graduating from Karachi University, he joined Bangla Academy in his native Dhaka, where he served as Director of Publication, Sales and Printing. Author and translator of numerous books in Bengali, Rabbi has served the cause of the book in Bangladesh as teacher, innovator and organizer. Recently formed countries provide revealing case studies of the role of the book in national development because experience which has taken decades in countries with longer histories has to be compressed into years. Bangladesh (population 110 million) became independent in 1971. It had been part of Pakistan for twenty-four years, its culture, industry, politics and inevitably its literature being subservient to the Urdu-speaking West Pakistan, 2,000 miles away. East Pakistan, as Bangladesh had been called, was the creation of the decision in 1947 to allocate predominantly Muslim areas to Pakistan. Bengali-speaking East Pakistanis revolted and Bangladesh became suddenly independent as the outcome of war between India and Pakistan. The Bangladeshis were then faced with all of the challenges of new nationhood, in which the development of a publishing industry, a book trade, a national literature and a library system were low priorities. Under Pakistani rule, the only publishers had been school textbook suppliers, distributing books authorized by the government.

INTRODUCTION
There is an enormous amount of information on the Web about religion and you will be able to find data on most, if not all, of the religions of the world. However, a large proportion of the sites are directed towards the religious adherent rather than the scholar of religion, and other sites serve simply as locators for organizations. Nevertheless, there are still many sites that an academic would find very useful. This guide has been prepared as a resource for the faculty and graduate students of the Centre for the Study of Religion, University of Toronto. It is intended to be an introduction as well as an appetizer for those members of the Centre who are new to the Web. Back to: [ Table of Contents
Search Engines
It is possible for you to conduct your own search of the Web using any search engine available to you. However, it would be useful to begin with the following three sites, where indexes are provided for topics which are routinely searched by these engines. YAHOO: Society and Culture: Religion
This site contains an extensive index of religions and related topics. You will find links to religions ranging from African Religions to Zoroastrianism and to topics ranging from atheism to theosophy. The number of sites found for each item listed is shown.

Selection Sources for Congregational Libraries:
Introduction
This site is intended to heighten awareness of a particular type of library, namely congregational libraries. Here, visitors will find links to library associations, software for running a library, and reviews of print and electronic sources designed to aid in library purchasing. The site will be most useful to church and synagogue librarians, although anyone interested in learning about church libraries, or finding worthy religion books and videos, may find helpful information.
For the purposes of this site, a congregational library is defined as a library located in a Protestant, Catholic or Jewish house of worship. Characteristically, the library serves the local congregation, and collects primarily religious materials.
Developing a collection from donations and a limited budget can be a challenge for any librarian, but congregational libraries present special constraints upon material selection. While these libraries are specialized in terms of collecting exclusively religious materials, religious materials are available in a variety of formats for various audiences. Uniquely, a congregational library attempts to gather materials which reflect a denomination's viewpoint while maintaining a balance of other religious views.

Comparative Study of Religion
Dr. Kimerer LaMothe, Head Tutor The Comparative Study of Religion offers undergraduates access to a range of human experiences that have produced much of the greatest literature of the world, inspired its art and philosophy, and shaped its moral consciousness. The concentration also provides students with a basic understanding of one or two of the major religious traditions of the world through study of the traditions' sacred books, ritual and artistic symbolism, philosophy and theology, and the traditions' social history. To achieve its ends, the concentration stresses the acquisition of certain specific skills: (1) the arts of reading and interpreting texts; (2) clear writing (essays are a substantial part of the requirements of the sophomore and junior tutorials); (3) an understanding of the basic modern literature on the theory of religion and of the methods of the study of religious phenomena; (4) a reading knowledge of a foreign language. Concentrators draw up a Plan of Study under the supervision of the Head Tutor and their adviser in consultation with appropriate members of the Committee on the Study of Religion. There are three options within the field: one involving work in two religious traditions, one in a single tradition, and one in a single tradition and in a secondary field of study. All three programs involve required work in general, methodological, or comparative courses outside of the major religious tradition(s) being studied. Concentration credit for study abroad is possible; students interested in such credit must petition the Committee on the Study of Religion, through the Head Tutor.
