Miller Library, the often-photographed building with the clock tower in the center of campus, houses the humanities and social science collections, the College archives, Special Collections, and the library's administrative and technical staff. The branch library for art and music is in the Bixler Art and Music Center and features a listening center and a rapidly growing slide collection. The science library, in the F.W. Olin Science Center, includes individual as well as group study areas, each complete with computer network access, and incorporates the geology map collection. The Colby libraries are open from early morning until late at night throughout the academic year and during daytime hours in the summer. Some study areas and a computer cluster are open 24 hours a day. An open-stack system allows easy access to a collection of more than 900,000 items, and the on-line catalog and the library's electronic indexes and Internet files are available on library workstations and computers campus-wide. The collection strongly supports all curriculum areas and contains more than 2,700 currently received periodicals, many long runs of retrospective periodicals of historical and scholarly value, and daily newspapers from this country and abroad. Miller Library is a depository for U.S. and Maine state documents and subscribes to the United Nations depository collection on microfiche.

Numata Lectureship in Buddhist Studies at McGill University May 25, 1998 The Faculty of Religious Studies at McGill University is the recent recipient of a $1 million gift from the Tokyo- based BDK Foundation to establish the Numata Lectureship in Buddhist Studies. This newly created position will strengthen the Faculty of Religious Studies and its program of East Asian Religions. The Lectureship will provide additional support to the Faculty in its mission to study, teach and interpret world religions, particularly the increasingly popular Buddhism. The Numata Lecturer will work with faculty members, contribute to scholarship within the Faculty, and guide students at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels. Dr. B. Barry Levy, Dean of the Faculty of Religious Studies, is thrilled by both the gift and its timing : "The Numata grant is important for several reasons. Coming as it does during a time of fiscal restraint, it offers our Faculty of Religious Studies the opportunity to expand offerings in Buddhism and to give this important spiritual tradition added visibility in the Western world. As well, it demonstrates international confidence in McGill and the Faculty by strengthening us as a permanent center of Buddhist Studies."

The main library complex consists of two connected buildings that function as a single entity. The Speer Library , opened in 1957 (and named in honor of the renowned missionary statesman Robert E. Speer), has space for 400,000 volumes and 200 readers. In addition to the Circulation and Reference departments, it houses the main reading room and several smaller study rooms and carrels, offices for acquisitions, cataloging, and serials, two medium sized classrooms, and meeting space for committees and outside groups. The Henry Luce III Library , dedicated in 1994 (named in honor of a distinguished trustee, Henry Luce III), will accommodate an additional 350,000 volumes and 250 readers. Along with the Special Collections and Information Research departments, it contains extensive facilities for Ph.D. candidates at various program stages, a large exhibit area, thirty-eight lockable carrels for which students may apply to the Reference Department, several rooms for seminars and for group or individual study, space for special projects that draw upon the resources of the library, and a general meeting room. The Reigner Reading Room , named for publisher Charles G. Reigner, is located on the Tennent campus, and serves the seminary's Christian Education programs. Under the supervision of the professional library staff, this facility has space for over 10,000 volumes and for an extensive collection of curriculum materials, filmstrips, tapes, records, pictures, and other resources for the church educator. It can accommodate approximately thirty readers and twice that number in occasional workshops. .
