Freshmen are challenged in the first unit Watch Your Language to consider the power of vivid words in a study of semantics which includes formal, informal, standard, nonstandard, slang, cliches, jargon, etc. We then observe the power of words in classic literature with units in poetry, short story, drama, and novel. Additional goals include the ability to think critically, as well as increased cultural awareness and tolerance for diversity. Students are challenged to read many books outside of class during the Individualized Reading Project. The Mechanics of Grammar are emphasized in a unit called Punctuation Prowess. A Career Unit and The Odyssey which encourage creative thinking, an appreciation for our literary heritage, and an understanding of the universal themes of life. ENGLISH 10 OPTIONS ENGLISH 11 OPTIONS THEMATIC LITERATURE - The junior language arts course is designed to present students with a thematic approach to literature. It is expected that the course will provide intellectual and emotional stimulation, develop skills which enhance the enjoyment of reading and writing, promote cultural diversity, and provide an opportunity to refine both literary and personal communication skills which will enhance the future life of the student. In addition to vocabulary building and regular writing assignments, students will be required to write several papers and essays including a research paper the first semester, and a compare and contrast paper the second semester. | |
