  • Amphibians Introduction Rodents, non-human primates, dogs, cats, and farm animals have long been the preferred animal models in biomedical research. their behavioral repertoire and physiological responses to stimuli are more similar to human systems than are lower organisms. However, as amphibians, fish and reptiles become better understood in the field and laboratory, their advantages as alternative animal models are being revealed. While there are about 4,000 known species of mammals, there are over 4,000 species of amphibian, 6,000 species of reptiles, and more than 20,000 species of fish. Such diversity allows for a wide range of research on specific organs, tissues, and systems that are similar in function, but often less complex than in mammals. Due to differential rates of ova maturation and numbers of gametes produced, elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, rays) are used to study fetal nutrition and toxicology as well as gametogenesis. The monkfish is an important insulin resource for researchers since it contains 20 to 40 times more insulin-producing tissue than the laboratory rat.

Collaborative Thematic Unit Theme: Reptiles and Amphibians
by Mike Seagle and John Geanangel Grade Level
Upper Primary (2nd and 3rd) The theme of this unit, "Reptiles and Amphibians," is especially appropriate for children of this level because they are fascinated with animals and are often highly motivated to explore their immediate environment.
Focus:
The overall purpose of this interdisciplinary, thematic unit of study is to help students learn more about the distinct characteristics of reptiles and amphibians, including an emphasis on the metamorphosis and development of amphibians. The students will accomplish this through becoming involved in a number of interdisciplinary lessons and activities. The length of this unit can be adjusted according to the specific needs of the classroom. The students will have experiences in caring for animals, and they will have opportunities to express themselves through creative work in art, writing, music, and movement activities.
General Objectives
On completion of this unit, the students will:

67. Amphibians And Reptiles In The UK
More general references are listed below. Beebee, T., Griffiths, R., 2000.amphibians and reptiles A Natural History of the British Herpetofauna.
http://www.darkwave.org.uk/~caleb/ukspecie.html
AMPHIBIAN AND REPTILE SPECIES IN THE UK The UK herpetofauna is not rich in number of species. There are twelve, possibly thirteen native species. AMPHIBIANS Amphibians are small creatures with a water-permeable skin, which restricts them to damp habitats, although some are more tolerant of dryness than others. All species in the UK require water for breeding, and lay waterborne eggs. These develop into tadpoles which eventually change into the adult form, and leave the water. This metamorphosis is characteristic of amphibians. Breeding takes place in spring, although common frogs may breed as early as January in some areas. After breeding has finished, the adults usually leave the water, and do not return until the next year. Being ectothermic ('cold-blooded'), amphibians cannot generate their own warmth. They are thus not active at low temperatures, and will retreat into frost-free hiding places in the winter, where they remain in a state of torpor until the weather becomes warmer. Some may spend the winter in the water they will breed in come spring. Native amphibians in mainland Britain are represented by three species belonging to the order Urodela (newts and salamanders), and three (possibly four) belonging to the order Anura (frogs and toads). In addition, there are a number of additional species which occur only on the Channel Islands. There are also introduced species which have lived and bred in the wild for varying periods of time.

1. Have a frog race. After going outdoors to a large grassy area, each player should practice the leapfrog position - knees bent and hands on the ground in front of you - and try leaping like a frog. Choose a long starting line, a long finish line and someone to say "go." All players should line up at the starting line and on the word "go," leap to the finish line. The first player to reach the finish line wins.
  • Alternate #2 : Players can be divided into equal-sized teams. The starting line and the finish line are the same place and a "turning point" needs to be designated. When the starter says "go," one player from each team leapfrogs to the turning point and returns to the starting line; the next player may start as soon as the first tags him/her. Leapfrogging continues until all players have had a turn. The first team to finish wins.
Alternate #3 : For students able to operate stop watches, players compete against the clock. The times of all players on a team are added to find the winning team. The fastest and slowest times could be dropped or averages found whenever times are introduced.

Exotic Pet Rescues Reptiles and Amphibians Unfortunately there appears to be a great need for exotic pet rescue and shelters. Sadly, this phenomenon is not unique to the exotic pet trade. However, I believe this need is greater for exotic pets than other pets due to the "fad" nature of some exotic pets. Many people are drawn to the unique nature of the more exotic species. I admit that my fascination with hedgehogs arose out of how unique (and cute) they are. However, I found out everything I could about hedgehogs before I committed to owning one. Unfortunately, many people do not research their acquisitions and end up disappointed or disillusioned with their new pets. When they get large, aggressive or ill, interest wanes and the animal becomes unwanted. Finding homes for some of these unwanted exotics can certainly be a problem. Reptiles seem to be very susceptible to fad popularity. For example, turtles were very popular about the time that "Ninja Turtles" were a hit. Of course, those cute little turtles turned out to be less exciting to own than a lot of people thought, and they grew and needed to have their cages cleaned a lot. It was also discovered that they could carry

[[p. 234]] General Conclusions. Evolution of Middle America. We have seen in the review of the Amphibian and Reptilian fauna of Mexico that it is composed of Northern and Southern immigrants; that a considerable number of the northern group can claim to be old, autochthonous Nearctics; that some families, genera, or species have also representatives in the Antilles, and that most of these forms point unmistakably to Central America, or even further south, as their original home; lastly, that but few Antilleans belong to a northern stock. Our present task limits itself to the Tertiary period. It is doubtful whether any of the genera in question are older than the Eocene, but not a few can be proved to have existed in our region in the mid-Miocene epoch; and it is surprising that they should date so far back. Lastly, there was no Central America in the Cretaceous period.

Introduction to my own reptilian pets
I have twenty-two reptiles. One of them is a Red-eared Slider turtle, named "Turtle". The other twenty-one are a pair of adult Black Rat Snakes, named "Black Satin" and "Black Velvet"; four babies from Velvet and Satin; two Everglades Rat Snakes ; two Texas Rat Snakes ; one Albino Black Rat Snake and ten Corn Snakes . Turtle, Satin and Velvet were all hatched prior to 1990, all the other cold-blooded creepies were hatched since Spring 1999 . I also play surrogate Mom to a number of snakes and lizards belonging to my good friends, John and Pam, whenever they're out of town. In fact, it was because of John and Pam's menagerie that I got into breeding small rodents; and that led to me keeping my own snakes. John and Pam own a 1998 son of Satin and Velvet, named "Black Magic."

    Introduction
    The Herpetology Division
seeks to establish SREL as a herpetological and ecological research center that is recognized regionally, nationally and internationally. It also works to identify the Savannah River Site (SRS), a National Environmental Research Park, as an ideal field area for herpetological research. Researchers strive to attain these goals in accordance with the mission of SREL, which is "to perform independent scientific assessments of the impact of SRS operations on the environment."
SREL's herpetological research focuses on the population dynamics and ecology of all species of amphibians and reptiles. One objective is to determine functional relationships between population parameters (e.g., survivorship, reproductive output, dispersal rate) and environmental conditions, with the goal of explaining our findings at the ecological and evolutionary levels. A second objective is to apply this basic research to environmental impact and conservation issues.
Two issues of direct importance to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are:
