Essay Writing: Overcoming a Student's Nightmare
By Sharon G. Boddy The most common form of writing is the essay, and knowing how to write one effectively is a fundamental skill for writers of all ages. The essay is not only used for academic papers. Feature articles, business reports and even "letters to the editor" follow the same pattern: introduction, body, conclusion. Unfortunately, few are taught the essay format thoroughly in high school, and when students enter university they may be writing them for the first time. Never fear! Essay writing may seem an insurmountable obstacle, but once you learn the "tricks of the trade," writing them becomes easier, even enjoyable. The method used is almost identical for freelancers, so if you are an aspiring writer, learning the essay format can put you ahead of the competition. All essays follow the same pattern of production: choosing a topic and focus, preparing an outline, researching, drafting, and producing a final version.

Darcy Pattison Editor's Note: The internet changes quickly and some of the sites and services listed in this article have vanished. The links are left as a matter of historical accuracy and preserving the article as closely as possible to its original publication in the CWIM 2000.) If you haven't discovered it yet, the Internet is SuPER for Writers. SUSUpport Before I went on-line, I felt isolated and lonely. No one else I knew was trying to write for children and I had no way of getting feedback on my stories. Enter the internet, which knows no geographic boundaries. Suddenly, I found peers from across the United States who were struggling with the same issues I was. I participated in various critique groups, shared setbacks and joys; I had found a community of writers. You, too, can find support and encouragement from the on-line community of writers, through bulletin boards, e-mail critique groups, private mailing lists and other resources.

Screenwriting 101
Elsewhere on the Web The Writers Guild Outside Article 2 Okay, so you're about to write a thriller about a NYC cop who devotes his entire life to hunting down the killer of his six year old daughter. The only problem is...you've never been to New York City, you don't have any kids and well, you're not a cop. So then how do you write a film about something you know nothing about? You don't! Just kidding, of course you do but it means you better do your research. Here are a couple of basic tips to help you in your researching endeavors.
  • Interviews: Do lots of them. If you're writing about NYC cops then you better hunt some down and find out the in's and out's of how they live and how they do their job. No, your friend who happens to be park ranger isn't good enough. This helps you write from the inside out. Learn how they talk, walk and eat. A lot of times cops are more then happy to help writers out with this kind of information. Sometimes all you have to do is ask. See if you can hang out with them for the day or even go on a ride along. These kinds of things make a good writer great and a good story even better.

And when it comes to research, the Internet is one of the easiest, most efficient tools around. But how safe is it? You might be surprised to learn that ferreting out information online can have serious repercussions if you're not careful—repercussions that can cost you everything from your time to your reputation, and even your assignments. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Check your sources, watch what you say The anonymous nature of public lists, newsgroups, chat rooms and Web mail accounts makes it difficult, if not downright impossible, to know whom you're conversing with online. Here are two smart research strategies that will help to minimize the risks of anonymous interactions online: • Don't put anything in an e-mail message or on your Web site that you wouldn't say in front of a prospective editor, competing writer or potential source (for example, specifics regarding your intended pitch, publication or pay rate).

Closer scrutiny of patterns, behaviors (both repetitive and unique), as well as developing trends must be closely examined. With the acceleration of technological change, and a growing emphasis on institutional learning and continuous product improvement, both the concepts and the policy prescriptions of traditional analysts have become less foolproof than they once were. The three primary approaches to analyzing and forecasting capital and financial markets - fundamental analysis, technical analysis, and behavior finance - are discussed in depth. Learning Resources Center West Virginia Northern Community College HELPFUL RESOURCES FOR ENGLISH AND LITERATURE INTRODUCTION The Learning Resources Center has a variety of information to help you with research in the area of literature. When researching a piece of literature and its author, it is good to remember that information may be found from many different perspectives. Literature can be approached directly by looking for the title of the work and the name of the author. Information can also be found by approaching it by its genre, by what the work is about, by the culture, race, or nationality of its author, by the time period it was written in, or by a literature trend such as romanticism. It is always best to start any research that you need early. This allows time for subjects to be narrowed and more clearly defined. Also, if the Learning Resource Center does not have the resources that you need, it may be able to borrow the source from another library through the interlibrary loan system. The most current information will generally be found in magazines and reference books. When researching in the humanities, this is not usually as important because humanities sources tend to be more timeless. An attempt to look for current interpretation of a work should still be made though to see if there is now a difference in the interpretation. Remember to ask for any help that you need and to start researching early!
