Where Did They Go? Who Am I? Women Miscellaneous Researchers/Writers The following researchers have written, or are writing books or magazine articles on a variety of topics relative to Vermont in the Civil War. We've offered them space here to share information on their projects. Jack Anderson My current writing project is a book to be entitled: "Vermont in the Civil War as Told by Its Monuments and Memorials" or something close to that. I believe I have located every Civil War monument/memorial in the state of Vermont which was put up from 1865 to roughly the 1930's - when the veterans were still alive. I have photographed each and am researching the history of each, including sponsorship, funding, design, materials, dedication ceremonies, etc. The monument is actually a segway into the story of that town's participation in the war, with vignettes about particular soldiers and officers, battles fought, honors won, etc.I am not including monuments in cemeteries. I am not including modern day monuments. The period of commemmoration I am choosing is from the end of the Civil War to the last days of the GAR. I would appreciate hearing from folks if they feel I have overlooked any monument. So far I have catalogued: ... Gregory Bova My current project is a book length history of Ship Island, Mississippi with a focus on its role during the Civil War. Ship Island, located twelve miles off Biloxi, Mississippi, was the strategic key to New Orleans' capture. Used by the British in the War of 1812 that campaign failed at Chalamette. The Union's attempt was successful due in part to the advent of steam powered warships.

Documentation, Part II
by Derik Casper

The first part of this article (#106, November 2000) dealt with general issues of documentation in the four leading styles: APA, CBE, CMS, and MLA. In this second part, we focus on the documentation of online sources. As any teacher knows who requires documented papers, students are relying more and more on the Internet, especially the World Wide Web, for source material for their papers. Indeed, many students will use nothing but web sources if they are not specifically required to include print sources. This trend raises two issues: how to evaluate the worth and reliability of web sources, and how to document them in a paper.
Evaluating sources
It is easy for students to use a search engine and type in keywords that ultimately point them to the info they are looking for. In fact, students like to treat the web as a replacement for the library. However, the way in which information is found in the library requires students to evaluate the sources. For instance, while researching in the library, students will look in specific directories and read abstracts in order to decide if the source is useful prior to reading the source. Researching on the web is not as intensive. A key word search can lead straight to an article. Therefore, students need to think about more than just finding information when they use the net. The Internet is not any different from other sources in this respect. The excitement of finding something useful for a paper often overwhelms students, and they forget to look for author and title as well as other important things, like the last time the source was updated.

June 22, 1998 The Internet offers so many wonderful resources that will make researching for your next novel much easier. Let's see what we can find: Are you writing an historical novel, or a novel that requires your characters to wear a certain type of apparel? Visit and look under Costumes. Categories include Elizabethan Costumes, Biblical Costumes, and the History of Costumes. Here's a site that offers information on Historical Boys Clothing. Industry Interview: Jeff Kleinman

Most writers dream of publication. But there's another side of the publishing business everyone should consider: the legal aspect. Graybill and English is both a literary agency and law firm, specializing in literary, art, entertainment and media clients. FictionAddiction.NET's Apryl Duncan talked with Jeff Kleinman, one of the firm's agents and lawyers, about getting an agent, contracts and legal issues. Does every author need an agent? Nope. Not at all. The first thing you need to do is to figure out if your book is something that should go to a larger, more commercial press - as opposed to a smaller, more regional press. If the former, it really helps to have an agent (although it may not be necessary, depending on the press; but usually most larger publishers require that you have an agent); if the latter, you certainly don't need an agent - although having a lawyer, or someone knowledgeable in publishing law, is certainly a very good idea. How do you feel about agents that charge up-front fees?
