It is situated south of the equator and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Almost in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the island is remote from the mainland. The nearest neighbor is the island of Reunion (220 km to the southwest), Madagascar is about 880 km to the west and India is 3,860 km to the northeast of Mauritius. Together with the islands of Rodrigues and Reunion it forms the Mascarennes Archipelago.
Mauritius is a small fragment of a large volcanic chain, drowned in the Indian Ocean. T,he island has an area of 1,860 square kilometers and is made up of a central plateau gradually rising towards the southwest where it reaches its highest point at 800 meters with the Piton de la Riviere Noire. Due to the volcanic origin of the island, this plateau is surrounded with what has remained from the primary crater - the mountain ranges with fantastically shaped masses of basalt and some isolated peaks. Numerous rivers, streams and waterfalls crisscross the central plateau.
Mauritius boasts a marvelous extended coastline of almost 350 km. Long beaches covered by finest sugar-white sand are sheltered by a colorful coral reef. Mountains with abrupt slopes, surrounding the central plateau, overlook the coastal plain. As a country, Mauritius includes the inhabited island of Rodrigues, some 560 km to the northeast and other nearby coral atolls such as Cargados Carajos and Agalega.
