Introduction to Object REXX Programming
Duration:
Summary:
This course is designed to enable students to create, debug and modify programs in IBM's Object REXX programming language. The course includes execution under Windows NT or Windows 9x, although it can also be hosted in an OS/2 Warp 4.0 environment. A principle advantage of Object REXX is the ease of creating new programs that utilize existing vendor-supplied and/or site written materials. Rapid design and development techniques will be taught that result in clean, maintainable code and reusable class libraries.
Audience: This course is intended for programmers, analysts, and project leaders.
Topics:
    Introduction to Object REXX
    Quick review of classic REXX
    Introduction of objects
    Using and building classes
    Working with objects
    Defensive programming
    Performing input/output in Object REXX
Interfacing to Windows and OS/2 Introduction to Windows dialog programming in objects Using the OO dialog template generator
Prerequisites: Students should have attended a Multiplatform REXX Programming course or have equivalent knowledge of the REXX language keywords, functions and syntax. Email webmaster@protechtraining.com

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE rexx programming LANGUAGUE. In this article I would liketo show that Rexx is an interesting highlevel programming language, too.
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Garage/3323/introrexx.html
AN INTRODUCTION TO THE
REXX PROGRAMMING
LANGUAGUE Rexx is used as a command language for operating, dialog, database management, network systems, as a scripting language for automating and integrating applications in these systems and as a macro language for arbitrary application programs. In this article I would like to show that Rexx is an interesting high-level programming language, too. This is an original introduction. I will concentrate only on features of the language Rexx which are not included, in whole, in the others programming languages. Instead the chapter "Types, Constants and Variables" Declarations or types are missing in Rexx programs because:
  • All data are in the form of strings of characters.
  • The meaning of a constant depends entirely on its usage. Operations are applicable on the basis of instantaneous values.
  • A variable is a symbol that represents a value. Variables are considered to be varying-length character strings allowed to hold any binary value of any length between zero and an implementation maximum (the length of the evaluated result of an expression is limited by the available storage). Variables are automatically initialized at their first use. A variable which has not been assigned a value is not initialized. It will contain the default value of the symbol, which is the symbol's own name in uppercase letters.
  • If the characters in a string form is a valid number, optionally with leading or trailing blanks, that string may participate in arithmetic operations. Numbers may be specified in exponential notation if desired.

Welcome to Michel Castelein's Home Page
(Last updated on 11 March 2003) For more than 20 years I enjoyed being an z/OS (formerly known as MVS and OS/390) system engineer, i.e. I'm a freak that loves genuine computers (i.e. mainframes).
(So, don't ask me anything about Mickeysoft etc.)
Well, I switched sides as I am now an education consultant with Jeeves Systems Group , a company based in Vilvoorde (i.e. near Brussels in Belgium I teach several (self-written) OS/390-related courses in OS/390
Those courses are given in Dutch, French, or English.
They can be organized at your site, or you can attend our open course sessions.

Just in case you'd like to know...
Be aware that IBM Belgium has moved its education center from La Hulpe to avenue du Bourget/Bourgetlaan 42 in 1130 Brussels!
The next open courses I'll conduct in Belgium at Jeeves Systems Group's headquarters (in Vilvoorde click for the location ) and at IBM Learning Services' center (in Brussels , near the NATO) are: OS/390 and z/OS Introduction : 28-30 April 2003 ( Vilvoorde , course code ES051BE) : 05-09 May 2003 ( Vilvoorde , course code ES070BE) S/390 Assembler Fundamentals Vilvoorde , course code ADASM1BE) High Level Assembler : 22 May 2003 ( Vilvoorde , course code ADASM2) Java Concepts and Programming Vilvoorde , course code JAVA01) C Programming in OS/390 Vilvoorde , course code ADCP1BE) OS/390 and z/OS Introduction : 27-29 August 2003 ( Vilvoorde , course code ES051BE) : 01-05 September 2003 ( Vilvoorde , course code ES070BE)

Prerequisites: Knowledge of REXX Programming. The student may attend the 3-day basic REXX programming class just prior to attending this class but a programming background is strongly recommended. Email webmaster@protechtraining.com

30. The Rexx Language: A Simple Alternative For Programming
Article by Don Limbaugh, Computer Bits magazine.Category Computers Programming Languages Rexx...... It has a friendly name and it is an easy language to use. The rexx programminglanguage comes to us courtesy of Mike Cowlishaw of IBM.

October 1998
The Rexx Language
A simple alternative for programming ... by Don Limbaugh Somewhere along the line, we all get that "just out of reach" feeling when trying to accomplish a task on the computer. You need to move and rename a group of files simultaneously or delete temporary files after a backup. Perhaps you want to start three programs with one icon. Sooner or later, you'll want to have a more advanced way of telling the computer how to follow your directions. You'll hear about programming languages and consider using one to make life easier. Now that you are ready to program, how do you go about it? Being a 32-bit, hip, Windows kind of person, you are now too advanced to use Qbasic. Qbasic died with DOS, and the standard programming tool of DOS users the world over has been innovated out of your operating system (OS). You now have two choices: you can purchase a retail programming package ( e.g. , Visual Basic) or download a freeware or shareware tool from the Internet. Perusing the national magazines, you find big, splashy article headlines about Java, ActiveX, Visual Basic, C++ and HTML. Although Java is free, it changes every five minutes or so and becomes less friendly to newcomers with each iteration. ActiveX, which sounds really neato, isn't actually a language but a library for other languages. Visual Basic is easy to use and powerful, but the full version costs big money. C++ is somewhat expensive and not very user-friendly. HTML is more of a document-formatting system than a programming language.
