Reading 1: Prudence Crandall and the Canterbury Female Boarding School
In the fall of 1831, the residents of Canterbury, Connecticut, approached 27-year-old Prudence Crandall about opening a private school for young women in their community. Crandall accepted the invitation and paid $500 as a down payment to purchase the recently vacated Paine mansion located on the town's green. Having been educated at the Friends' Boarding School in Providence, Rhode Island, and having taught at local district schools, Crandall came to the position with a fine reputation as a teacher. The Crandall family, Quakers from Rhode Island, moved to south Canterbury when Prudence was young. The Canterbury Female Boarding School enjoyed the complete support of the community and was soon a success. Subjects taught included reading, writing, arithmetic, English grammar, geography, history, chemistry, astronomy, and moral philosophy. Basic tuition and room and board cost $25 per quarter. Students paid extra fees for instruction in drawing, painting, music, and French. With student tuition, Crandall was able to pay off the $1500 mortgage within a year. At the time Crandall opened her school in Connecticut, white and African-American children received a free elementary education at the district schools. No further public or private education was made available to black children. Crandall became aware of the injustices to African Americans in Connecticut and elsewhere through her housekeeper Marcia Davis, and Marcia's friend Sarah Harris, both African Americans. Sarah's father was the local distributor of the abolitionist newspaper

THE BOY’S CLUB OF NEW YORK’S ACADEMIC ALL STARS Photo Gallery Itinerary BRAVE BEIJING PROTEST…EMERGE AMBASSADORS OF GOODWILL On the morning of June 16, 1999, and long before most of the residents in the communities and neighborhoods surrounding The Boy’s Club of New York’s four clubhouses in East Harlem, Manhattan’s Lower East Side and in Flushing, Queens were awake, sixteen BCNY members, four Agency officials and film crew boarded a bus to JFK where they would begin a journey that would take them to China. For the Boy’s Club of New York, it would be a chance to promote the principals of student diplomacy and cultural exchange through international competition. What followed was nothing less than an odyssey of personal discovery. Individually, we were each challenged and as a group, we quickly had to learn just how important it would be for us to exercise our collective will in the face of adversity. With an emphasis on service, community and scholarship, The Boy’s Club of New York has been providing its members with an array of educational and recreational opportunities and alternatives since 1876. On the surface, the benefits of international travel seemed quite clear. Although the young men who were eventually able to join us all live in their lives in isolation and without the appropriate resources often find it impossible to reach beyond the confines of their own communities. They are; however, extremely able and when given the chance to freely represent their country, they do so with a genuine sense of dignity and promise that is far too often missing when members of our own political leadership are asked to articulate their positions relative to our most pressing global concerns.

The Legionaries of Christ The following material is from a series of investigative articles written about the Legionaries of Christ that appeared in The Hartford Courant in 1996 and 1997. The articles not only expose certain abusive practices of the Legionaries, but also contain accusations of sexual misconduct made by former Legionary seminarians against the founder of the Order, Fr. Marcial Maciel Degollado. Reprinted with permission. Introduction From its founding in Mexico in 1941 by 20-year-old theology student Marcial Maciel, the Legionaries of Christ has grown into a religious order of 350 priests and 2,000 seminarians in 18 countries, double the number of a decade ago. About 40 of the priests are in the United States. The order has a major presence in Connecticut, including headquarters in Orange, a minor seminary in Cheshire, and a center in Hamden where it publishes two national Catholic newspapers and carries on direct mail fundraising operations. It operates "apostolic'' boarding schools for younger boys in Center Harbor, N.H., and Edgerton, Wis. In Westchester County, N.Y., the order has a new novitiate on a 100-acre estate in New Castle and a family center in Rye. In Mount Pleasant, the order purchased from IBM a 264-acre conference center assessed at $40 million.

http://www.mala.bc.ca/homeroom/Content/Schools/Private/britps.htm
The British "Public Schools"
From the 1850s to the 1950s, many of the non-denominational independent schools of British Columbia were patterned on the "public schools" of Great Britain. The British public schools were not "public" in the common sense of the word. They were not intended for the children of ordinary or common families; rather, they catered to the British aristocracy and to affluent middle-class families. The elite British boarding schools were styled "public" because many of them were incorporated by (public) statute and because they were not privately owned. Also, unlike some of the old English grammar schools, they were open, on a fee-paying basis, to the "public" - i.e. to students from any part of the country and not simply to children of local residents. By the end of the nineteenth century, the British public schools enjoyed tremendous prestige, not because they offered a high calibre of academic instruction but because they developed character in their pupils. Character involved resourcefulness and self-reliance, respect for tradition and loyalty (to one's school and, by extension, to one's country.) Indeed, the success of the British Empire was attributed in large part to the spirit of the British public schools. Not surprisingly, then, the British public school system was emulated by imperial enthusiasts who established private schools for the sons and daughters of influential, anglophile families in British Columbia.
