Hillside School is an independent boarding and day school for middle school boys, grades 5 through 9. Founded in 1901, Hillside is situated on over 250 acres of fields, forest, and ponds in Marlborough, Massachusetts, less than a mile from the intersection of routes 495 and 290 (30 miles from Boston; 70 miles from Hartford, Connecticut and Providence, Rhode Island; and 3-1/2 hours from New York City. The School's mission is to help young adolescent boys develop in their formative years. Our students develop academic and social skills while building confidence and maturity. Program highlights include a student teacher ratio of 6:1, academic and social skills tutorials, a working farm and farm curriculum, and wonderful cultural opportunities in Boston.
We seek not only boys of average to above-average intelligence who are looking for a supportive, structured school, but also students who have been underachieving in other school settings. Hillside's students matriculate at leading independent secondary boarding or day schools as well as local parochial and public high schools.

Formation of the College Board Formation of the College Entrance Examination Board in 1900. This organization, set up by presidents of 12 leading universities administers admissions tests. The purpose is to standardize the admissions process administratively and to force New England boarding schools to adopt a uniform curriculum. In 1901, the first College Boards were conducted. Exams were done in essay format for specific subject areas. Sample some questions from the 1901 test.
Invention of the IQ A French psychologist, Alfred Binet, is credited with inventing the first IQ test, a test that could measure one's intelligence. Binet's intent was to identify slow learners by determining their mental ages.
World War I
Experimentation with army IQ Test
During the first World War, IQ testing advances greatly when Robert Yerkes, a Harvard professor, persuaded the army to let him administer IQ tests to nearly two million recruits. Yerkes wants to use tests to choose officer candidates and help the IQ movement build up a record of statistical evidence. The resulting Alpha and Beta tests mark the first time an IQ test has mass results. The goal of IQ testers is to select the most intelligent people of society, not necessarily to reform education.

The Hands of Young America by Susan Pence Beaudry
Part II - Hands That Taught Young America
Originally published in Needle Pointers , Volume XIV, Number 2, February/March '86 I pray that risen from the dead, I may in glory stand A crown, perhaps, upon my head, But with a needle in my hand. - a sampler verse - Certainly this is the lament of many truehearted stitchers, but nary a stitcher among us can truly claim to be born with a needle in their hand. Stitching is surely a learning process, and the hands that ply stitches have had the guidance of wiser teaching hands. This has repeated itself throughout history. From the 17th through the 19th Century, children from three to as old as ten were often sent to dame schools. These schools were usually conducted by widowed women of reduced means in their homes or rented buildings. The education though rudimentary, frequently, included needlework This was available only for the fortunate female, and for many it would be their single brush with formal education Plain sewing, knitting and marking samplers were usually taught. (It is interesting, to note that most extant male samplers appear to have been made in dame schools.) These marking samplers would prepare the students for the task of marking textiles so necessary for their laundering and rotation, and for ownership and legacy purposes.
