Off Hours: Michael McKeown: biologist, activist for rigorous math education W ith a post office box and a home computer Michael McKeown co-founded a nationwide citizens group dedicated to promoting tougher standards for math education. At first, Michael (left) and Erica McKeown hoped that a meeting with their children's principal to discuss the algebra curriculum would quell their concerns about their children's math curriculum. The text de-emphasized an analytical approach in favor of a nonanalytical one, they said. But, they were told, the curriculum was based on the "new way" of teaching. About a year later, Michael McKeown met a high school chemistry teacher who also expressed concern about the way mathematics and science were being taught. "It was an epiphany when I realized there were lots of people out there who shared similar concerns," he said. With three other couples, the McKeowns co-founded Mathematically Correct, based on the fear that certain new math programs would leave their children unprepared to do the kinds of work they do. Since it began in 1995, organization members have advised and helped draft local math standards for multiple state and local boards of education across the country. By far the largest amount of their work has been in California, where their efforts have seen changes in the curriculum and standards.

Program Menu T he Crusade offers services suitable to Crusaders' grade levels and developmental stages as they progress from elementary school to high school. The programs seek to address social development and academic achievement as well as skills needed in preparation for the world of work. In the elementary grades , Crusaders participate in a number of in-school and after-school literacy activities in their schools. They are encouraged and supported by Crusade AmeriCorps members posted in their schools. These AmeriCorps members also offer assistance in classes, organize community-service and other activities, and remind Crusaders of their pledge and college opportunities. AmeriCorps members offer a special service to all sixth grade Crusaders by conducting an assessment of the student's strengths and weaknesses in preparation for the challenges of middle school. The Crusade places advisors in middle schools to support Crusaders and encourage them to do well in school and plan for college. These advisors monitor attendance and grade records of Crusaders in their schools and link students to tutoring and other programs as needed. The Crusade also offers middle schoolers a special Adventure Education program a series of Saturday and/or summer sessions that help students develop self-confidence and the ability to work well with others.

Tennessee Alaska: On June 13, 2001 The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development endorsed the National Standards. To the Top Connecticut: Connecticut's State Board of Education adopted a state policy on School, Family, Community Partnerships on August 7, 1997 based on the National PTA's National Standards for Parent/Family Involvement Programs. Connecticut's General Assembly passed a law in 1997 (Public Act 97-290) which was intended to foster meaningful partnerships among schools, families, and communities to enhance student learning. It stated that ALL local and regional boards of education were required to develop, adopt, and implement written policies and procedures to encourage parent-teacher communication by September 1, 1998. The Connecticut Department of Education along with community partners including the Connecticut PTA, put together a packet to help local boards of ed comply with the law. The packet contained a sample policy, the six standards in detail, an overview of the law, and procedures and agreements that had been developed in school districts around the country, as models for communities to use. This policy and law impact 1,068 public schools including 645 elementary, 163 junior HS/middle schools, 163 high schools, and 17 vocational/technical schools, serving 545,619 public school students.
