Programs for the General Public The Rhode Island Space Grant Program provides a number of science programs for the general public. The "Space Grant Speakers Bureau" sends working scientists to clubs and organizations, such as Senior Citizen groups and Amateur Astronomy clubs, throughout the state that request speakers on science topics. Several programs have been developed in association with the Roger Williams Park Zoo and Cormack Planetarium . The Space Grant Program has organized and supplied speakers for the Zoo Docent Program, the Zoo Winter Lecture Series Program, and two special Zoo programs associated with the Dinomation Exhibit. In addition, Space Grant has supplied speakers for the Brown Institute of Secondary Education Zooscope Program. Request a speaker. Kennedy (D-RI), visiting Potter-Burns Elementary School today as part of the U.S. Department of Education's "National School Modernization Day" program, outlined initiatives he is supporting in Congress to provide students with facilities more conducive to learning, greater access to technology, better-trained teachers and smaller Grades 1-3 classrooms. "There is nothing more important to this nation's future than making sure our students have access to a quality public education," said Kennedy. "But with the current state of our educational infrastructure, that access is being denied and the excitement everyone should feel with the opening of the school year is undermined without a new progressive education agenda." Students desiring to teach at the high school level (grades 9 - 12) are encouraged to pursue majors in Biology, Chemistry or Physics. These programs provide a greater concentration in the subject area as well as include supporting course work in all areas of science. Students completing the major in Chemistry and Physics also meet the requirements for Rhode Island certification in General Science. Biology majors who wish to obtain General Science certification must complete an additional course in Physics, preferably Physics 102. S tudents seeking certification at the middle school level (grades 6 - 8) should pursue a major in General Science.
