I am, by trade, a U.S. History teacher. However, history is more than a career for me- it is a passion. I consume volumes of civil war materials, immersing myself in the most heated and bloody conflict in American history. On this page, I have divided American history into periods, with what I consider the best links for each included. Red Scare: strikes that took place in a time of widespread anxiety and fear of Communism ("Red") (1919 - 1920).
Palmer Raids: Mitchell Palmer ordered the arrest of 5.000 suspected Communists in 33 cities across the country. The Economic Situation and the Contrast between urban and rural areas after WWII:
- Warren G. Harding took a laissez - faire attitude towards the nation's economy, cutting federal spending, encouraging business growth, and reducing the national debt.
- Farmers did not share in the nation's prosperity during the 1920s. Their way of life contrasted sharply with that of city dwellers.
- Many blacks migrated to northern cities in search of opportunities denied them in the South.

Shortly after Carl Greenleaf became president of the company, he noted that saxophones were being produced at a modest rate of about 100 per month. According to his own recollections, the "saxophone trade increased quite rapidly [in the 1920s] and the saxophone business almost immediately became the most profitable part of the business. Every effort was made to increase production and it was built up very materially" (unpublished autobiographical sketch). According to the company's 1922 annual report, saxophone production had increased to about 150 units per day.

    http://www.duboislc.org/BlackPerspective/BlackPerspectivePart14.html
A Black Perspective of American History By Leon Dixon, Gerald Hynes, and Carolyn Gaines Nelson Part Fourteen: The Roaring Twenties As the war ended, homecoming troops flooded the job market, while simultaneously the orders for war supplies fell off and came to an end. This situation produced a post war recession. As usual the Black laborers, both those already at home and the homecoming, were relegated to the ranks of the "last hired, first fired." "Only in the heaviest work, such as road building and longshore work could Negroes hope to hold jobs. The market for domestic servants was shrunken by post-war introduction of domestic labor saving devices such as washing machines. And, as always in a tight labor market, the Negro found himself dispossessed from those few jobs which had been traditionally available to him." As early as 1919 the returning Black soldiers were confronted, with the revival of the Ku Klux Klan, a series of brutal race riot as well as the scarcity of jobs. "The possibility of intervention on the economic front by the Federal government was nil—the American people had overwhelmingly voted for a return to 'normalcy' under the Republicans and their genial if corrupt presidential candidate, Warren G. Harding. Conservative policies in government had returned with a vengeance. Business influence in government was supreme. As Harding's successor, Calvin Coolidge, put it, 'the business of the nation is business'." "The quest for the dollar became a national crusade, prosperity was for those who could seize it, and the devil was welcome to the hindmost. The level of the national morality was well illustrated in 1925, when, with the government's permission, the Ku Klux Klan (which now boasted four million members) was allowed to parade in full white-sheeted regalia down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington."

"Shack compactly illuminates the expatriate African American community of jazz musicians that thrived in the Montmartre district of Paris in the 20s and 30s and helped turn the 'city of lights' into the major jazz capital it remains today. The catalyst for this transformation was James Reese Europe, leader of the 'Harlem Hellfighters' troop regiment in the American Expeditionary Force in World War I. These musicians and soldiers, despite indignities inflicted by the U.S. military, impressed Europeans with their jazz concerts, and later the Hellfighters became the most decorated military unit in the American forces. After the war, many of them stayed in France, which lacked the segregationist laws and customs that plagued them at home. Shack profiles the leading figures in this community, including Josephine Baker, Ada 'Bricktop' Smith, and Sidney Bechet. A brilliant account of an unsung chapter in American history." Booklist "A short but powerful book that makes a valuable contribution to the publisher's 'Music of the African Diaspora' series."

A Curriculum of United States Labor History for Teachers.
Sponsored by the Illinois Labor History Society
    [Table of Contents]
    Introduction
The United States has the bloodiest history of labor of any industrialized nation on Earth. It is a story rich in human drama and tragedy. It is also one of progress and hope. This is a resource that teachers of United States history can use to incorporate our rich social and labor history into their courses. Using the ideas employed here teachers will increase student understanding of the American economic system and the important issues we all face as workers today. The concepts and lessons will build on each other so that at the end of the school year the student should have a working knowledge of the importance of labor in society. A guiding theme of this work is how laborers have earned a voice in the workplace and increased their share of the economic pie. Teachers should highlight the stark contrast between today's working environment and the relationship between workers and owners of the past. The scope of United States history has been divided into eleven basic periods. These will correspond with the unit divisions that many modern textbook companies use. In each period the main events and issues of US labor history are introduced. Concepts, ideas and resources are presented to aid the teacher. In several of the units specific lessons are available for immediate use.

Forest Park Middle School Introduction The Task Conclusion HyperText Dictionary
    Introduction
The 1920's was a truly exciting decade in American history today we might say it 'rocked;' back then, it 'roared.' In all aspects of life, fashion, music, literature, sports, economics, social reform, politics, things were happening, and happening fast. Using the Internet, you'll soon know just what was going on.
    The Quest
The radio was a big part of everyday life in the 20's. Your task will be to create a radio broadcast that your team can perform by researching a variety of sites on the decade and writing an historically accurate program.
    The Process and Resources
In this WebQuest you will be working together with a group of students in class. Each group will contribute to the Task by providing one segment of the broadcast. As a member of the group you will explore Webpages about The Roaring 1920's. Because these are real Webpages we're tapping into, not things made just for schools, the reading level might challenge you. The group responsible for segment 1 will write one national news story, and one story about the economic condition of the nation. The group responsible for segment 2 will write one story about crime or criminals, and one sports story. The group responsible for segment 3 will write one story about fashion, and one about either music or literature. The group responsible for segment 4 will write one commercial, and interview one non-political person living at the time.

Broadcasting The twenties began with an era of prosperity and high hopes as America emerged victorious from the First World War. By the end of the decade, the stock market crash and crushing poverty for many created a new sober society and a sharp contrast with the exuberance of the early twenties. Experiments in broadcasting were taking place around the country ( click here for a chronology ) but station 8XK is generally considered to be among the first important stations to sign on. Frank Conrad, a Westinghouse engineer, broadcast the election returns of the Harding-Cox election and KDKA was born. KDKA is special because it provided broadcasting with a number of radio 'firsts' including the first religious services and first broadcast of a presidential inaugural address.
