Rock Climbing in Malaysia - Home Page KL map Photos New Routes Introduction The information contained in this web site will hopefully point visitors and residents alike in the direction of some of the best rock climbing to be found in Malaysia. Links and contact numbers have been provided for rock climbing sites and areas, where no detailed information has been included in this guide. Climate Tropical. The traditional wet and "dry" seasons seem to be a little erratic so if you're planning a visit, some up to date metrological research may pay off in order to increase your chances of getting the best out of the weather. It does rain most days, but usually only in the afternoon and the rock's generally dry by the next morning. Many of the routes are overhung and remain dry even in the heaviest downpours. In a nutshell, you should be able to get plenty of climbing done every day. Rock Type Primarily limestone and there's plenty of it! Protection Most of the routes are "sports routes" and are equipped with bolts, hangers and top anchors. Some of the top anchors could do with new slings and lower off karabiners. Grades Based on the French system and reasonably consistent with those found in nearby Thailand.

PENITENTE CANYON Penitente Canyon is an experienced climbing area, known for its incredible climbing, camping, and easy access. To get there from Alamosa, take Hwy. 160 west to Hwy. 285, following it north to La Garita. Head West from the La Garita cash store and veer left just after the pavement ends. Turn right where the main road turns South and take the middle of the three roads. There should be a sign pointing you the proper way. Total trip from Alamosa is around an hour.
TRES PIEDRAS Tres Piedras is located south of Antonito, Colorado just across the New Mexico border. Bolted and Natural-Pro routes are available in a beautiful setting. Tres Piedras is mainly located on private land, therefore, the owner asks that you send him a signed waiver prior to climbing. Waiver can be obtained through this link. To get there, drive South from Alamosa on Hwy. 285 thru the town of Antonito and across the New Mexico border to Tres Piedras, turn right at the light, (approximately 60 miles.) After you pass the U.S.F.S. Ranger Station, turn right again at the water tower. Follow the dirt road to where it ends (locked gate) and park. It is a short hike to South Rock (to your right).

Camp High Rocks for Boys
Position Announcements Employment Information Request form Camp High Rocks sits at an elevation of 3000 feet in the midst of 1100 acres of camp-owned mountain woodland, with an 11 acre lake, and miles of hiking and biking trails. Founded in 1958, High Rocks remains dedicated to providing a caring, challenging, and noncompetitive outdoor experience for boys. Campers come from all over the southeastern United States; many return year after year for the wide range of activities offered and for the supportive environment they find here. The strength of High Rocks lies in its staff: in each counselor's unique talents and personality, and in an expression of these through the combined effort of the staff working together. We are looking for a team of caring people who will share thoughts with each other, try new approaches, support one another, and who are willing to be creative, energetic, responsible, and patient as they lead by example. Each counselor shares in various responsibilities: being aware of camper safety, organizing activities in camp and on trips out of camp, teaching specific skills, and supporting the campers' growth. Male counselors live in a cabin with 5 or 6 boys, ages 8- 16. We act not only as teachers, but as friends, role models, and at times "parents." There is a lot of hard work involved, but the joy felt and the personal encouragement received from helping a child grow and mature is unmatched. It is a great experience to become a part of the High Rocks family.

Desert Rock Climbing
Sheer Fear!
By Lynn M. Bremner If you want to experience an outdoor sport which challenges both your mental and physical capabilities, rock climbing is it. I recently participated in a basic 2-day rock climbing class offered by Joshua Tree Rock Climbing School. I found it to be one of the most challenging adventures I have ever experienced.
Taking the First Step
When I first decided to sign up for the rock climbing class, I was concerned about how high we would be climbing during the course. I regularly hike, bike, walk, horseback ride, rollerblade and run, so I was confident in my physical capabilities. What worried me was my fear of heights. I decided to call the school and get some more details about their program before I made the final decision to sign up. After talking with Michelle, who schedules all of the classes and is an avid rock climber herself, I learned that approximately half of the students who sign up for their classes are women. I also learned that most people who take the classes do not have any previous climbing experience. Michelle reassured me that I didn't need to climb any higher than I was comfortable, so I signed up for the two-day Basic Rock Weekend Course, which costs $145.
Day 1: Ground School
The students were instructed to meet at Turtle Rock in the Hidden Valley Picnic Area located in the north end of Joshua Tree National Park. As I drove into the park towards Hidden Valley, I was mesmerized by the huge boulder outcroppings and the unique Joshua Trees that were abundantly scattered throughout the park. Mojave Yucca, creosote and other common desert shrubs covered the sandy ground, leaving only large boulders and rocks piles uncovered.

c)That you know the nearest telephones, doctors, inns and places of refreshment and shelter in the area. 5. Overview Location/Maps Description Things To Do ... Nearby/Resources
Joshua Tree National Park is one of the most popular rock climbing areas in the world. More than 4,500 established climbs offering a wide range of difficulty are located within the park's 794,993 acres. Over a million people visit Joshua Tree each year, many of them rock climbers. The National Park Service mission requires park managers to provide for the enjoyment of the park by today's visitor, while conserving and protecting park resources for future generations. Dramatic increases in visitation, coupled with decreased staffing, burden an already difficult, sometimes contradictory, task. Park managers are concerned about trash, soil erosion, vegetation damage, human waste disposal, natural and cultural resource protection and overcrowding as well as the quality of each visitor's experience. This information is devoted to what you, as a climber, can do to help preserve your enjoyment of this unique recreational resource. Help protect the American treasure we call Joshua Tree National Park. Helpful Information Emergency Numbers Park Dispatch: (24 hours - call collect)
Or call Weather The best climbing weather occurs from late October to early December and March through April. Winter days and especially winter nights can be quite cold; summer days are often extremely hot.
