Rocks can be fascinating to young and old. A simple collecting trip requires little more than the desire to get outdoors and to notice the geological wonders of the earth. Collecting rocks, or just looking at interesting ones, can be a fun family activity. Materials Needed
    • Cold chisel for breaking off a sample Magnifying glass for examining what you collect Knapsack or heavy canvas bag for carrying samples home Pocket knife for cleaning Newspapers to wrap fragile specimens Old gloves to protect your hands Mineralogist's hammer (blunt on one end, pointed on the other) for breaking off samples
Activity Be careful to obey the laws of your country. In the United States, rock hounding is usually legal on public lands, but not in national parks, national monuments, and other restricted areas. It is also against the federal law to collect vertebrate fossils and Indian artifacts in the United States. Collecting on private lands requires the permission of the owner. Obeying the laws of your country, using courtesy, and taking good safety precautions can help to make your trip more enjoyable. Once you have chosen a place to hunt, plan your trip. You may want to take a whole day with the family to collect rocks, eat lunch, and enjoy the outdoors.

    Volcanic Rocks In Oregon
    By Ben
    a third grade student in
Jewell School, Bend, OR Volcanic rocks are formed when volcanoes erupt. Hot molten (melted) rock from inside the earth is forced out of the volcano known as lava. There are two ways for the lava to come out of a volcano. The lava can forcefully be thrown into the air. The smaller pieces are known as volcanic ash, the bigger pieces are known as volcanic bombs. The lava can also flow down the sides of the volcano forming different kinds of volcanic rocks. There are many different kinds of volcanic rocks. Obsidian is a black, glassy type of rock. When the lava cools rapidly it forms Obsidian. Obsidian was used for arrowheads and spearheads made by the Indians. Basalt is a volcanic rock that can be black, dark gray, purplish, or green. Basalt is formed when the lava cools a little slowly then Obsidian and the lava flows harden. Pumice is a volcanic rock that floats. Pumice is formed when there's gas bubbles in the lava. Pumice is in some of your soaps that you buy. The three main rock groups are Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary. They form the rock cycle.

Good evening! 30 November, 2000 really mean to do that?' So - being suitably chastened by my computer, I return to things I really do enjoy. Writing Mike's Notes and engaging in one of my many 'favorite' hobbies: amateur geology. There's just something about rock formations, old quarries, caves, hills, cliffs, volcanoes,...etc. that fascinates me. Every now and then I'll stop by the side of the road; take out my old rock hammer and magnifier and add a new specimen to my growing collection of interesting rocks. Of course, it's important to note that I always go to sites where rock collecting is allowed. More often as not, though, I'll simply grab my ever-present camera and snap a picture that I can enjoy on those proverbial rainy days. Half the fun in 'rock hounding' as it's known, is knowing where to look. For that, I rely on a series of books published by a small company nestled in the heart of the mountains, appropriately named Mountain Press. They produce a fantastic series of books called 'Roadside Geology Of ...' written by geological experts from many areas of the country. These books are written to serve as a geological tour guide with typical entries such as this one from the Roadside Geology of Arizona: " At mile 21 the lava-filled and later eroded conduit of a volcano, a volcanic neck, rises quite close to the highway, an interesting little peak with several radiating dikes

Fellow Geo-geeks, Well we are beginning the Spring 2003 semester, and it is with bitter-sweet excitement that I declare it my last. I'll miss you guys more than anything. I am looking into the Colorado School of Mines for graduate work in Hydrogeology. I promise you that I will post a page with advice for those who are graduating (there is a great deal that you need to know which no one will tell you until the last minute) and advice for field camp (what to focus on in your studies and what you'll want to take with you). I'd also like to put into a recommendation for the OSU field camp, for such obvious reasons as 1) No out of state tuition fees 2) Weekends off for camping and rock-hounding 3) An incredible faculty, great food in the mess hall and a neat little basecamp and 4) Lots of neat field trips to places like mines to refresh you during your field-work. Heather R. There is a lot more to come so please check back! Heather R. So what's new with the club?
