Cathedral Valley Mt Bike Ride The scenic loop through Cathedral Valley, in the northern part of Capitol Reef National Park, is "the finest multi-day mountain bike outing in the Milky Way galaxy, if not the entire universe," according to Michael McCoy, author of Mountain Biking Adventures In The Four Corners Region. With praises like that, we decided it was time to get down there ourselves and see if it deserves that kind of hype.
Michael's book is great - we recommend it. But, in this case we have to disagree with his conclusion. The ride is fun, and long (65 miles), and cuts through an amazing variety of scenic geological formations. It's up there near the top on our list, but there are several other rides in Utah which are just as good, perhaps better.
The loop follows a graded road which can easily be traveled in a high clearance vehicle (four-wheel drive is not usually needed, but comes in handy in spots). The road crosses steep hill after steep hill, so it is a physically demanding ride. The road is sandy in many areas, and rocky in others, but this is not a technically difficult ride.
The scenery is remarkable, particularly if you are into rock hounding or geology. You cross formations like the Bentonite Rainbow Hills, enchanted playgrounds which are almost impossible to pass without stopping to explore. You go by lookout points which offer breathtaking views of the Park's South Desert, the Waterpocket Fold, the Henry Mountains to the southeast, and Thousand Lake Mountain to the west. Cathedral Valley itself is spectacular, but it is almost upstaged by these supporting cast members.

How did you get interested? I had a fifth grade teacher who taught earth sciences superbly and took us rock hounding, as did a favorite uncle. I always liked being outdoors, making observations. On the strength of these experiences, when I got to college, I signed up for freshman geology to get my science requirement out of the way. I got lucky and had some great teachers who decided to make a geologist out of me in spite of, or perhaps because of, my rebellious attitudes. What types of jobs have you held? Both public and private sector, and teaching. In the public sector, pure research for the federal government (USGS). Private sector, oil and gas and then environmental geology. Teaching, short courses and now college level. What started you down your current career path? The path of least resistance, at least until I started adding the writing. That may sound like a chickenhearted way to go, but in fact it made sense to do what I was good at and greatly enjoyed (geology) while I developed the discipline and maturity necessary to do something as demanding as an art form (writing). Happily, I get to combine the two. What are the positives and negatives of your job?

Vancouver Island's volcanic origin promises the energetic hounder a constant supply of interesting treasures and precious finds. Combine rockhounding with casual strolls along the beach or strenuous hikes in search of exposed mineral veins - either way, it's memorable outings amid magnificent scenery! The abundance and accessibility of beaches on Vancouver Island makes it a 'gold mine' for the rockhound. Most beaches are public with good access, and full of treasure at low tide. The glacial origin of the Island is responsible for large deposits of debris full of rocks, with the fascinating geology visible everywhere here and in the Gulf Islands . Ferocious winter storms constantly churn up the coastline, offering renewed bounty to the rock enthusiast.

STUDY GUIDE FOR EXAM I GENERAL GEOLOGY (GEOL 1113) The following study guide is provided as an aid to help you identify the major concepts you should have learned concerning topics covered during the first few weeks of class. Key vocabulary with which you should be familiar is highlighted in UPPER CASE GREEN throughout this document and on future documents of this type for the course. You should, at the very least, be able to define the terms given in UPPER CASE GREEN in order to complete the exam. Ideally, however, I hope you will be able to do more than simply respond to definitions. You will also find words underlined in blue - these can be clicked with the mouse and will transport you to images or various sources of additional material I think you might find interesting and helpful to your studies. I hope you will find the time to explore these links, as they are often quite fascinating and (I hope) will pique your interest in this course and Geology as a discipline. It has been my experience both as a student (remember, I was a student once, too! - and it wasn't that long ago!) and professor that the students who enjoy the course most are those who spend a little extra time getting to know it better. This is especially true of Geology - I have found that most people have a natural curiosity about Geology and geologic processes. My aim is to enhance your curiosity, provide you with information regarding the basic principles of Geology, and gain sufficient knowledge of these principles to be able to apply the definitions and the concepts they represent to a fuller understanding of the Earth as a planet and our role as residents of it!

BLM Montana/Dakotas - Frequently Asked Questions
ROCKHOUNDING ON PUBLIC LAND
Rockhounding is a permitted recreational activity on public land administered by the Bureau of Land Management. The usual rock hound materials, including agates and stones, may be collected in reasonable quantities for hobby use. Petrified wood collection on BLM lands is limited to 25 pounds plus one piece per day to a maximum of 250 pounds per year. Rock hounds are allowed to collect rocks found on the surface of the ground. Power equipment or explosives may not be used for excavation or to collect materials or wood without written authorization from the appropriate BLM office The Archeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 prohibits the excavation, taking, or destruction of any historic or prehistoric site, or any object of antiquity on lands under federal jurisdiction. Vertebrate and other fossils of "recognized scientific interest" also are protected. The BLM requires permits for the collection of certain fossils. Permits are granted only to qualified institutions for bonafide scientific research and are not issued to casual recreationists, even though they may have an interest in fossils.
