Western Burrowing Owl ( Athene cunicularia hypugea
Status: Former Candidate (Note: As of February 28, 1996, this species is no longer listed as a Candidate species. However, it remains a species of management concern.)
Historical Status:
The burrowing owl's historical range is believed to be similar to its present range, however, its abundance and distribution is suspected to be in decline.
Present Status:
The burrowing owl's range extends from the prairies of southern Canada to South America. More specifically, this owl breeds from southern interior British Columbia (nearly extirpated) to southern Alberta, southern Saskatchewan, southern Manitoba south through western United States, central Mexico, central and southern Florida, West Indies, and locally in much of South America. In the southern parts of their range, burrowing owls are resident, but more northern populations, like those in North Dakota, they are migratory. This owl winters regularly in El Salvador and western Panama. The states of California, New Mexico, and Arizona are important wintering areas in the United States.
Habitat:
Burrowing owls are associated with heavily grazed tracts of mixed-grass prairie, particularly where there are burrows created by large rodents, such as prairie dogs and Richardson ground squirrels.

WHO IS ENDANGERED HERE ANYWAY?
What is the annual rainfall along the Jinsha River? Since there is no one taking count, I doubt if either of us will ever know. It is the same with animal species disappearing worldwide. There is no accurate count. Now, suppose it did not rain or snow along the Jinsha for several years. All life in Western China would be severely affected and all China would know something was wrong; no one would have to look at statistics. It is inaccurate to point out an animal as endangered, threatened, even extinct and get a real picture of the threat to our world . Many animals bob on and off and up and down the endangered ÒlistsÓ. As if all this is not confusing enough, nature itself also has a way of embarrassing the best of scientists. About five hundred sea otters (long thought extinct) suddenly appeared off California and have been around there ever since. We think the Caribbean Monk Seal is extinct because it has not been seen lately... Is it gone?

50 CFR Part 17 RIN 1018AC56 Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Endangered Status for the Plant Delissea undulata (No Common Name) AGENCY: Fish and Wildlife Service, Interior. ACTION: Final rule. SUMMARY: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) determines endangered species status pursuant to the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (Act), for the plant Delissea undulata (No Common Name). This species is known in the wild from only a single individual, located on the island of Hawaii. The greatest immediate threats to the survival of this species are habitat degradation and predation by domestic and feral mammals, fire, and competition with alien plants. The small population size of one individual with its limited gene pool also comprises a serious threat to this species. This rule implements the protection provisions provided by the Act for this species. EFFECTIVE DATE: November 12, 1996.

Native Endangered and Threatened Bird Species I live in the Commonwealth of Virginia and I am very proud to be from a southern and diverse state. I live in an area were there are mountains, rolling hills, fertile farmland and oceanfront within a days trip of my home. Even with all of this natural bounty, we are not free of pollution or threatened species. I would like to introduce you to the bird species that are in threatened and endangered in my area. Before I get into the birds that are imperiled in my area, I want to define protected, threatened and endangered. If a bird or any other animal is deemed protected, it is protected by a state entity. That simply includes all wild animals under the jurisdiction of the Game and Inland Fisheries in that state. An animal is not considered “protected” by the Federal government. Animals are protected by the federal and state governments if they are considered threatened. Threatened means that this animal is likely to be put on the endangered species list in the near future in some or all of its range. An endangered animal is any species that is in danger of becoming extinct in all or a significantly portion of its range.

Their reproductive rates are lower than their mortality rates over long periods of time, so their numbers are diminishing. The reasons for this are varied, but lately, very often involves a loss of habitat as people encroach on their living areas. When a species is listed as endangered or threatened, it is not a death sentence. Many animals, like the bald eagle and the American alligator, were on the brink of extinction and are now recovering. Many species, however, will not recover, and could be lost forever. Throughout time, animal species have been going extinct (long before people evolved); paleontologists estimate that well over 90 percent of all plant and animal species that ever existed have gone extinct.

maximum length- 20 to 30 inches
IDENTIFYING CHARACTERISTICS: The massasauga is the smallest of venomous snakes. Most individuals are 20 to 30 inches in length (record: 39 1/2 inches). Unlike the larger, black tailed timber rattlesnake, the massasauga's tail is ringed with dark brown or black, and the top of its head is covered with nine large scales (plates) like our nonvenomous snakes. The belly is black, irregularly marked with pale yellow or white. The tail is tipped with yellow in the young and bears a small, but well-developed rattle. BIOLOGY-NATURAL HISTORY: Massasaugas hibernate in water-saturated sites, six to 24 inches underground, although some remain active through the winter, raising their heads above the water in which they may lie. Crayfish burrows may be used to gain access to these winter quarters, from which the snakes emerge in mid-April. After feeding on frogs and crayfish and sunning for about a month, they move to higher, drier old fields or meadows nearby to feed on rodents and insects. Females with developing young may bask together in drier areas until birth of their young in August or early September. Females reach breeding age at two years and give birth to an average of six or seven young every other year. Hibernation begins in mid-October; young may enter hibernation later than adults.

Threatened:
Bald Eagle
On July 12, 1995, the status of the bald eagle was changed from endangered to threatened in the lower 48 states. Bald eagle numbers, estimated at a quarter of a million in the lower 48 states before 1800, declined steadily throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. Raptors at this time were regarded as vermin and shot on sight. The Bald Eagle Protection Act of 1940 increased public awareness and made indiscriminate shooting, poisoning, collecting, and trading of bald eagles illegal, stemming the decline for a time. But the advent of DDT and related pesticides during World War II and their widespread post-war use soon caused eagle reproduction to plummet. In 1963, a National Audubon Society survey reported only 417 active nests in the lower 48 states. After years of research, scientists determined that DDE, a breakdown product of DDT, accumulates in the fatty tissues of female eagles and impairs the calcium release necessary for eggshell formation. This induces thin shells and reproductive failure during incubation. These findings eventually led to the banning of DDT and related chemicals in the U.S. in 1972. In 1978, bald eagles throughout the lower 48 states were classified as endangered, except in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Washington, and Oregon, where they were designated threatened. Between 1984 and 1994, the number of known breeding pairs in the Pacific States Bald Eagle Recovery Region (Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana) increased from 479 pairs to 1,192 pairs. One-fourth of all the breeding bald eagles in the lower 48 states come from this region.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT SNAKES:
  • Snakes belong to the class Reptilia, which includes the
snakes, lizards, crocodiles, and turtles. They are reptiles characterized by elongated bodies and
a lack of limbs. Snakes are the most modern of reptiles, first appearing
in the fossil record during the time of the dinosaurs. It is thought that they evolved from ground dwelling
or burrowing lizards that exploited the survival advantages
to be found in a cylindrical, legless body. They gave up external ears and developed clear scales
to shield their ever-open eyes from dust and damage. They also developed instinctive behaviors that enables them to find and catch prey, hide from predators, reproduce and survive in a great variety of climates. They are distributed through most parts of the world.

Executive Summary
Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan: Rodent

David J. Hafner, Eric Yensen, Gordon L. Kirkland, Jr., Joseph G. Hall, Joseph A. Cook, and David W. Nagorsen In many cases, conservation of more popular species depends first and foremost on preservation of the rodent community that sustains them. Rodent species are often highly adapted to live in a narrowly defined habitat, and the diversity of rodents reflects the diversity of available habitats. The wealth of knowledge about rodents and their accessibility for research make them ideal candidates as indicators of the status of many terrestrial ecosystems. Rodent conservation must be a concern of every state, province, and territory in North America. Much of eastern and central North America has suffered extensive habitat destruction in the past, and populations of native rodents survive in pockets of remaining habitat. Other regions, particularly California and Florida, are currently under siege from agricultural and urban development and introduction of exotic species. Finally, more remote regions, such as northern Canada and Alaska, must be surveyed to provide a more precise view of natural ecosystems in order to mitigate anticipated human impacts.

The global extinction crisis is as bad or worse than believed, with dramatic declines in populations of many species, including reptiles and primates, according to the 2000 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, released today. Since the last assessment in 1996, Critically Endangered primates increased from 13 to 19, and the number of threatened albatross species has increased from three to 16 due to long-line fisheries. Freshwater turtles, heavily exploited for food and medicinal use in Asia, went from 10 to 24 Critically Endangered species in just four years. These are among the alarming facts announced by the world's largest international conservation organisation, with the publication of the Red List, the most authoritative and comprehensive status assessment of global biodiversity. The release comes a week before the second World Conservation Congress in Amman, Jordan, where members of IUCN - The World Conservation Union will meet to define global conservation policy for the next four years, including ways of addressing the growing extinction crisis.

Endangered and Threatened Ecosystems By Megan Vilello The purpose of this website is to explore the ecosystems of wetlands, grasslands, forests and deserts. I hope to provide you with some astounding facts about the deterioration of these magnificent habitats. It is a sad reality that so many of us are unaware of, yet it effects each of our lives in significant ways. We all must realize that once these environments are gone, they will never return. All of the species that survive in these ecosystems will also become extinct. If there is one thing to remember it is that... EXTINCTION IS FOREVER! What is an ecosystem? The complex of a community of organisms and its environment functioning as an ecological unit. An ecosystem is made up of a wide range of biodiversity such as different types of animals, plants, trees, flowers and fruits. Types of Ecosystems: - Wetlands - Grasslands - Forests - Deserts Wetlands Wetland are a shallow body of water or area which the ground is wet long enough to support plants that are specialized to grow under saturated soil conditions. Irreplaceable ecological services are provided by wetlands. They provide food and habitat for a wide variety of species. Wetlands are an extremely important source of biodiversity.
