ROLLER SPORTS HISTORY Evolution Competition Apparel Sport in Transition THE EARLY YEARS Roller skates were first invented in Europe in the 1760’s. Joseph Merlin, a Belgian, invented a skate that "skittered" across the floor on small wooden wheels. The hobby didn’t take off at all, and Merlin emigrated to England. In the 1800’s, the Dutch used wooden wheels on their ice skates so they could continue skating in the summer. Roller skates appeared on the ballet stage in 1818 in Berlin, and were also seen on the streets of Paris. In England, this form of recreation was referred to as "rinking". The skates of those times, however, only went in a straight line – they couldn’t turn – and they had no breaking mechanism, so once again the pastime faded away. Roller skating finally made its way to North America in the late 1830’s, with European manufacturers still dominating skate designs for several years. EVOLUTION OF THE ROLLER SKATE Following is a summary of the major known developments and technological improvements of the roller skate, from its origins in Europe, to the inline skates which are so popular today. And if you think that the "inline" technology is a 20

U.S. Olympic Training Center The village of Lake Placid is synonymous with the Olympic sprit. In 1932, the world focused it's attention on the picturesque village when it staged North America's first Winter Olympics. In 1980, the tradition continued as Lake Placid hosted the Games once again. Olympic history was made as the US Hockey Team stunned the world by defeating the powerful Russian team and continued on to win Gold. Today, the village of Lake Placid and the U.S. Olympic Training Center will host the nations best roller hockey players as USARS and the AAU will hold the 2003 Team USA Junior World selection camp and 2003 Future Prospects camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in the same rink as the "Miracle On Ice" happened. This year, USARS and the AAU will select the Top 30 roller hockey players in America that competed in the 16u and 19u divisions at the 2002 United States Championships and from the 2002 All-American team which was announced at the 2002 AAU Junior Olympics to compete for the privilege of wearing USA on their jersey and represent the United States at the 2003 FIRS Junior World Championships in Czechoslovakia. http://www.ccbeunet.br/projetos/2000/eti3/Marcela/history.html
History of the Inline-Skates No one is really sure when the first roller skates were used. It is likely that the first roller skates were an adaptation of ice skates and were used for transportation rather than sport. The first recognized inventor of roller skates was a Belgian manufacturer named Joseph Merlin. He produced the first roller skates with metal wheels in 1760. He presented his invention in London at a formal ball and rolled across the floor playing an expensive violin. The story is told that because his skates were unable to be turned or stopped, he glided gracefully into a huge mirror and suffered serious injuries.
The first time roller skates were "successfully" seen in public was in 1849, when Frenchman Louis Legrange used roller skates to simulate ice skating in the play Le Prophete. He created his skates by mounting tiny rollers down the center of ice skates.
In the mid 1800s, a number of other inventors took up the call and many different types of skates were produced. All, however, suffered the same problems Merlin's skates had: the inability to be effectively controlled or stopped.
New Yorker James Plimpton solved the problem of controlling skates in 1863. Plimpton's skates used a rubber cushion to anchor the axles. This cushion would compress when the body was leaned, enabling the wheels of the skate to turn slightly when the skater shifted his or her weight. Plimpton's design is considered the basis for the modern roller skate.

"Why do the Olympics exclude roller skating?" asks Lewis (Behind the Big Top) in his history of the sport, including speed skating, hockey and dancing on skates. Skates were developed in England in 1760, and ball-bearing wheels were introduced in the U.S. in the 1880s. Roller hockey began soon thereafter in the Midwest, speed skating started just before WWI and roller dancing arrived on the scene in the 1930s. Originally a pastime for the rich, roller skating fell into disfavor as roller rinks proliferated in seedy areas. The most damaging blow to its prestige, however, was the so-called Roller Derby, begun in Chicago in 1935, which turned violent after WWII and was put on TV. Lewis almost answers his own question about Olympic exclusion when he shows how inept the governing body of the U.S. Amateur Confederation of Roller Skating is. Given the book's narrow focus, it is unlikely to hold much interest for a general audience. Photos not seen by PW.
    Book Description

Check out her diary on CNNSI.com as she shares her training experiences. May 15, 2001 Park City, Utah Since this is my first writing I'll assume that most of you don't know who I am...if you do, I'm flattered, but for the sake of clarity I'll start at the beginning. My name is Jennifer Rodriguez. I'm a speedskater. As of this writing I'm in the midst of my summer training, getting ready for the upcoming season and the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City where I'm hoping to turn a few heads. In fact, I plan to win a medal there. Over the course of the next few months I'll be writing here periodically to let you know how it's going. Rest assured there will be ups and downs on the road to Salt Lake...that's fine with me so long as there's a big "up" at Salt Lake. Mailbag Jennifer Rodriquez will answer questions from CNNSI.com users in her Olympic Diary. If you'd like to submit a question, please enter it below.

This special month gives us a chance to celebrate and learn more about the great accomplishments and contributions of women throughout Canadian history. This year, the theme is Women and Sports - Champions Forever! Today, more than ever before, girls and women can participate in all kinds of sports and physical activities! You don't have to look very far to find examples of women who are sport champions. Who can forget the Canadian Women's National Hockey Team's gold medal victory after an exciting match against their American rivals at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City? Believe it or not, not too long ago, running shoes and playing fields were for boys and men only. Girls and women were not allowed to participate in sport activities! Over the years, they had to work really hard to get into the game and play the sports that we take for granted today. A real obstacle race...

Tara Kristen Lipinski Have you ever wondered how hard it is to win a gold metal? Have you ever wondered how much hard work and dedication it takes? Getting up and practicing as early as 3 a.m. and then staying for four hours and getting only five minute brakes in between. How many competitions you enter, how many times you become depressed or arent happy with what you did when you come off the ice. Well ,I do; I'm Tara Kristen Lipinski. I had very helpful parents through my childhood. My early career no one really noticed me, but I still tried my best. Many people know me for my main achievement, wining the gold and getting into the history books. Some consider me an American hero because I brought a lot of pride to America and have made a lot of achievements in my eighteen years. I was born in Sugerland, Texas on June 10, 1982. I skated for the first time when I was three. It wasnt on the ice though it was actually on roller skates. In all the time that I roller-skated I won over fifty plaques, medals and trophies. When I was six that is when I first stepped onto the ice and started to skate. At first I was terrible but about forty five minutes later I got the hang of it and started to transfer everything that I had learned in roller skating to ice skating. I continued to split my time between the two for three years, and then I finally decided to go with ice-skating. I first skated at the University of Delaware. I quit school and got a tutor because of my training hours. Later I moved to Blooming hills, Michigan. I advanced from first lesson to national medallist in six years. I usually woke as early as 3am for pre dawn skating sessions. I receive three to four hour tutoring and am an A student. At 12 and 1 month I became the youngest athlete to ever win a gold medal at the Olympic festival. I became a national medallist at age 13. At that age I had set some high goals for myself I said I want to go to the Olympics and win.
