Holy Roman Empire Established in 800 AD (or, depending on your definition, 962 AD), the Holy Roman Empire dominated central Europe until its dissolution in 1806, covering the lands now known as Germany. About: The Schmalkaldic League
The Reformation caused newly Lutheran territories within the Holy Roman Empire to clash with their Catholic Emperor. These tensions produced the Schmalkaldic League, an alliance of princes and cities. This is an article by your Guide. Austro-German Hapsburg Empire 1438 to 1848 Despite contains just a brief timeline, this page highlights an important point. While the major political entity in central Europe between 1500 and 1806 was the Holy Roman Empire, the title Austro-German Hapsburg Empire is far more representative of both the ruling family, and the core territory.

T-O Map
Dateline: 08/25/97 Ancient Greek and Roman geographers significantly enhanced European knowledge of the world; their maps were detailed and their writings of other lands were vast and informative. The fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century and the expansion of the Church led to a diminished knowledge of the world by the common person. Knowledge of the world and sciences was limited to the academic enclaves within monasteries. The quality of cartography declined dramatically during the middle ages. Church-sponsored cartography devolved into a simplified and stylized map of the world known as a T-O map. The T-O map derives its name from the map which appears to have the letter "T" contained within an "O" or circle. The circle represented the known universe and the "T' divided the world into the three known continents: Europe, Asia and Africa. The top of the "map" pointed east (the world "orient" means east and this is where we get the term orientation; now we usually orient maps to the north) and the area between the horizontal line in the "T" and the top of the circle represented Asia. It was believed that beyond Asia, above the circle lie Paradise.

The Roman Empire
Augustus and the Pax Romana
Caesar's assassination brought anarchy, out of which the Second Triumvirate emerged with the rule of Octavian (later Augustus Antony , and Lepidus . Octavian was Caesar's nephew, ward, and heir, and his true successor. At Actium (31 B.C. ) he defeated Antony and Cleopatra and made the empire one. No change was made in the government, but Octavian received from the senate the title Augustus and from the people life tribuneship; this, with the governorship of all the provinces conferred by the senate, made him the real ruler. He was called imperator [commander] and princeps [leader] and is usually considered the first Roman emperor. Holy Roman Empire Back to Last Page Glossary Index Related Terms Carolingian Dynasty
Investiture Conflict

Definition:
The development of the "Holy Roman Empire" was an attempt by medieval political and religious leaders to connect their own rule with that of the Roman Empire, a system which still captured people's imaginations. The Holy Roman Empire was first established under Charlemagne, but it declined after his rule because most of his successors were relatively weak and ineffective. The rule of Henry I (d. 936) represented an improvement in matters because he forced dukes in the old eastern areas which were once under Carolingian rule to submit to his authority. After he died, his son Otto I (936 - 973) ruled a vast region. Otto was a much better ruler than his predecessors, and he sought to expand his authority by assuming the power of lay investiture. The act of placing someone in the office of clergy was called "investing" them, which also included at the time granting them land which would help support them. These lands were royal fiefs, making these clergy members vassals of the ruler and beholden to him. This had a profound effect on the Otto's power, but mostly at the expense of the power of the popes - resulting a conflict later on called the Investiture Conflict

I was killed by the Roman Legionares Memory: I woke up and the sun was on my face. I thought it was odd because I should have been awake earlier. It was also strange because my home was empty. My little stone and wood house did not have my wife or children in it. I became aware or metal clanging outside and screams. I ran outside and found Roman Legionares killing my kinsmen. I grabbed my sword, it was thick and heavy. I ran outside and found my wife being beaten and raped. My children were killed. I charged the Romans on my wife and was ran threw by a spear. I died looking up at the sun on green hills.
