Country Info Romania Introduction Romania General Data Romania Maps Romania Culture ... Romania Time and Date Romania Culture Back to Top Romanian culture is largely derived from the Roman, with strains of Slavic, Magyar (Hungarian), Greek, and Turkish influence. Poems, folktales, and folk music have always held a central place in Romanian culture. Romanian literature, art, and music attained maturity in the 19th century. Although Romania has been influenced by divergent Western trends, it also has a rich native culture. Romanian art, like Romanian literature, reached its peak during the 19th century. Among the leading painters were Theodor Aman, a portraitist, and landscape painter Nicolae Grigorescu. Between 1945 and 1989 Romanian art was dominated by socialist realism, a school of art that was officially sponsored by the Communist government, and through which socialist ideals were promoted and advanced. A notable contribution to modern concepts of 20th-century art was the work of Romanian-born French sculptor Constantin Brancusi. The Romanian language, although developing over the centuries in difficult historical conditions, is as Latin as any other Romance language and, like the culture as a whole, continues to exhibit a remarkable vitality. This fact is perhaps paralleled by some of the Modernist tendencies in the Romanian fine arts: the sculptor Constantin Brancusi, a promoter of absolute Modernism coupled with a firm sense of classical Mediterranean values, had great international influence early in the 20th century. Romanian poets and writers, too, have operated in a cultural tradition somewhat different from that in neighbouring countries; in architecture, the Bucharest television centre is but one example of another Modernist trend.

http://www.mapzones.com/world/europe/romania/historyindex.php
Country Info Romania Introduction Romania General Data Romania Maps Romania Culture ... Romania Time and Date Romania History Back to Top The territory that is now Romania first appeared in history as Dacia. Most of its inhabitants were originally from the region of Thrace, in Greece; they were called Getae by the Greeks, and later, by the Romans, they were known as Dacians. Between ad 101 and 106 Dacia was conquered by Roman emperor Trajan and incorporated into the Roman Empire as a province. Roman colonists were sent into Dacia, and Rome developed the region considerably, building roads, bridges, and a great wall that stretched from what is today the Black Sea port of Constanta across the region of Dobruja to the Danube River. The Carpathian-Danube region in which the Romanian ethnic community evolved was settled about 2000 BC by migratory Indo-Europeans who intermingled with native Neolithic peoples to form the Thracians. When Ionians and Dorians settled on the western shore of the Black Sea in the 7th century BC, the Thracians' descendants came into contact with the Greek world. The Greek historian Herodotus, writing in the 5th century BC, called these people Getae (Getians). Together with kindred tribes, known later to the Romans as Dacians, who lived in the mountains north of the Danubian Plain and in the Transylvanian Basin, the Getae developed a distinct society and culture by the second half of the 4th century BC. During the 13th and 14th centuries, Walachia was involved in frequent struggles against Hungary. In the 15th century the rulers of the Ottoman Empire began to extend their conquests northward. Walachia was forced to capitulate to the Ottomans, although its leadership, territory, and religion were not changed. Direct Ottoman rule was not felt in Walachia until after the Ottomans defeated the Hungarians at the Battle of Mohács in 1526. At the end of the 16th century, a Walachian voivode, Michael the Brave, led a revolt against the Ottomans and succeeded in bringing Walachia, Moldavia, and Transylvania under his rule for a very brief period. Michael is the national hero of Romania for his part in this uprising and for being the first to combine the three territories that were to form Romania. After Michael’s defeat and death in 1601, the Hungarians ruled over Transylvania and the Ottomans regained control of Moldavia and Walachia.

MODERN ARCHITECTURE IN ROMANIA, 1920-1940
The analysis of architecture in the system conferred by the other arts allows for singling out the major crosscurrents existing in the course of the history, as well as the peculiarities belonging to architecture as a synthesis of arts, science and technology, definitely influenced by economic and social factors. ROMANIA AFTER WORLD WAR ONE-ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL CONTEXT The creation of the unified national state in 1918 made Romania one of the countries with important prospects of economic development in South-Eastern Europe. The world crisis of 1929- 1933 would not have major repercussions for Romanian society. Moreover, the crisis stimulated owners of capital to launch real estate investments in a bid to avoid the danger of devaluation. The evaolution of the legislative situation too, was congenial. Credits and tax breaks were granted for housing construction, as well as other allowances. The local administration, represented by mayors open to the renewing movement, backed the daring projects and worked firmly when it come to decisions concerning the evolution of the town, colaborating with valuable experts. The penetration of the new building technologies occurred at the same time, especially the wide-scale use of reinforced concrete. All these were concerted, as observers noted, with the progressive spirit of the investors, who would consider that modern architecture meets comfort requirements and suits the activities of West-European civilization, and also allowed for the implementation of economically efficient investments by employing technologies free of costly and laborious decoration.

ROMANIA - CULTURE
LITERATURE ARCHITECTURE THE FINE ARTS THEATRE ... CINEMA
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
Another feature of Romanian culture is the special relationship between folklore and the learned culture, determined by two factors. First, the rural character of the Romanian communities resulted in an exceptionally vital and creative traditional culture. Folk creations (the best known is the ballad Miorita - The Ewe Lamb ) were the main literary genre until the 18th century. They were both a source of inspiration for cultivated creators and a structural model. Second, for a long time learned culture was governed by official and social commands and developed around courts of princes and boyars, as well as in monasteries. The first printed book, a prayer book in Slavonic, was produced in Wallachia in 1508 and the first book in Romanian, a catechism, was printed in Transylvania, in 1544. Until the 18th century written culture mainly consisted of historical, moral, religious and legal writings. An outstanding personality of that time was prince Dimitrie Cantemir (1673-1723), for a short while ruler of Moldavia, prominent in various areas of humanist culture: history, philosophy, music, literature. He was known in the learned Europe as a remarkable scholar, author of writings in Latin: Descriptio Moldaviae (commissioned by the Academy of Berlin, the member of which he became in 1714) and

The csángó (chango) minority culture in Moldavia (Romania)
by András Barta
The Csángós are one of the best examples of the beneficial effects of cultural diversity. This ethnic group has for centuries been living isolated from other areas, where Hungarian is spoken, in an area with a Romanian majority.
This resulted in the development of an ethnic isle with an individual, most specific culture, interacting with elements of Romanian culture. This is best illustrated with folk songs and ballads, which are living and developing even today. They show Hungarian as well as Romanian elements. In spite of the idea, that many Romanian scholars admit the Csángós’ Hungarian origin: the official Romanian policy still denies the fact. As a consequence of the assimilation policy: 75 % of the Changoes has lost its Hungarian origin and language, but 25% of them still uses (Hungarian) mother tongue beside Romanian.
Social Background
The Csángó Hungarians live – almost exclusively – in villages. Only 1 % of them are intellectuals. 10 % of them are illiterate and 40% are half illiterate. About 10% of the young people graduate from high school and every 10th of them continues their studies at the different departments of universities/colleges.
Hungarian Csángós generally live on a law level of civilisation and they have to face many social problems too, because more than 60 % of the active men are unemployed. There are 3-6 children in an average chango family. The women generally work in and around the house in a patriarchal system. The families live mostly on farming but the soil is poor and life is a struggle for surviving, which results in a significant migration rate among the Csángós – usually to a Romanian majority area (promoting assimilation of the Csángó Hungarians to the Romanian majority.)
