He may have been an avid hunter, but he loved animals and respected them. It is his love for animals that is the core of the teddy bear legend. Hard-working and dedicated, Roosevelt was at the height of his popularity in 1902. His famous "big stick" policy and his powerful physical presence gave him a reputation as a man's man, while his well known devotion to his family made him popular with wives and mothers. Journalists of the day also admired the president, and good-naturedly reported his activities. However, Roosevelt was in trouble with Southern Republicans and National Republicans for his sponsorship of progressive social programs. He further antagonized them by inviting Booker T. Washington to dine at the White House with his family and to advise him on the appointment of blacks to federal posts in the South.

A 5 page paper discussing Presidential Power and the Modern Presidents, by Richard Neustadt, and Hidden Hand Presidency: Eisenhower as Leader, by Fred Greenstein, and how both of these works demonstrate that the power the president holds is not always as supreme as most think. The President of the United States is an individual with the highest profile in the government but that does not mean that he holds the power to make all decisions. Both of the authors being examined illustrate this point from different perspectives. No additional sources cited.

The First Presidential 'Picture Man' Theodore Roosevelt and His Times on Film BY KAREN C. He also was a force to be reckoned with as the 20th century dawned in the U. S. He was charismatic, a real he-man—an appropriate symbol for America’s vast power, might, and advancing culture in the early 1900’s. He held various offices in New York before becoming Vice President to William McKinley, and when McKinley was assassinated on September 6, 1901 TR became the youngest man ever to assume the presidency. He eventually served two terms, from 1901-1909. TR was born in New York City in 1858. He overcame a sickly childhood by developing a love of the outdoors, which lasted throughout his life and set a precedent for the nation’s environmental policies during his years in the White House. Under his direction, the U. S. Forest Service was established in 1905, and over 200 million acres of land were placed under federal protection. TR was the nation’s ideal of strength and vigor—he even had a boxing ring installed in the White House, and lost the sight in one eye because of a match he fought there. Americans were charmed by this man who seemed larger-than-life, whose language was as colorful as his personality and as varied as his exploits. He is still remembered for his take on foreign policy: “Speak softly, and carry a big stick.” His vocal skills carried over into the literary arts. His first book

THE LINCOLN-ROOSEVELT CONNECTION
BY Gene Griessman, Ph.D.
www.presidentlincoln.com Teddy Roosevelt's father, whom Teddy adored, served in a civilian capacity during the Civil War. He spent a great deal of time in Washington and became a close friend of President Lincoln and his wife. They took carriage rides together, and Roosevelt even went shopping with Mary and bought bonnets for her. Theodore Roosevelt Senior's direct connection to the President was Lincoln's young secretary, John Hay. Year's later John Hay became Teddy Roosevelt's Secretary of State and served him faithfully. In fact, their joint efforts resulted in Roosevelt's receiving the Nobel Prize, the first American ever to receive it. When Roosevelt was inaugurated in 1905, John Hay gave the President a very special presenta "mourning ring" that contains an oval glass over a strand of Lincoln's hair. Hay sent a note with the ring that contains this request: "...Please wear it tomorrow; you are one of the men who most thoroughly understand and appreciate Lincoln."
Roosevelt replied: "Dear John, Surely no other President, on the eve of his inauguration, has ever received such a gift from such a friend. I am wearing the ring now; I shall think of it and you as I take the oath tomorrow. I wonder if you have any idea what your strength and wisdom and sympathy, what the guidance you have given me and the mere delight in your companionship, have meant to me these three and a half years? With love and gratitude, Ever yours...."

Presidential Temperament
Excerpted from Presidential Temperament , by David Keirsey and Ray Choiniere
The year 1912 was a presidential election year, and former President Theodore Roosevelt was again campaigning for the nation's highest office. By the evening of October 14 his campaign had carried him to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was to deliver a speech in the city's public auditorium. The time was nearing for him to speak, so he strode from his hotel onto the sidewalk outside, where a car was waiting to take him to the auditorium. As Roosevelt walked toward the car a man suddenly stepped up to him and pointed a pistol at his heart. The gunman pulled the trigger and a bullet burst from the pistol and smashed its way into Roosevelt's chest. His shirt was suddenly spattered with red, and more blood immediately began seeping from the ugly hole. The bullet had come to rest against his rib cage, a mere half inch from his lungs. "He pinked me!" shouted Roosevelt, as bystanders rushed to subdue the gunman, John Shrank. They wrestled Shrank to the ground and then, seeing Roosevelt's bloody clothing, prepared to rush him to the hospital. But they found Teddy Roosevelt a more difficult man to deal with than the would-be assassin. "TR" adamantly refused to go for help. "You just stay where you are!" he thundered. "I am going to make this speech and you might as well compose yourself." Teddy Roosevelt was as good as his word that October evening. Still wearing his torn and red-stained shirt, he had himself driven to the auditorium and there, Shrank's bullet lodged in his chest, he pulled out his blood-spattered notes and gave his speech. "I have a message to deliver," he declared to the stunned audience, "and I will deliver it as long as there is life in my body."

http://www.jrbears.com/story.htm
Many of us have loved a teddy bear . Maybe we've even had more than one very special "teddy" in our lives. Here is the real story of how the teddy bear sprang into our hearts. Nearly 100 years ago, President Theodore Roosevelt, went on a bear hunt. He enjoyed nature and being out in the woods where animals lived. Because he was the President of the United States, the people organizing the hunt wanted to make sure the hunt was successful. But after 3 days of walking and climbing and riding, no bears were found. Now what? The President's bear hunt would be a failure! The next day the hunt guide and his hunting dogs finally found an old bear. The dogs and guide followed the bear for quite a distance until the bear was very , very tired. The dogs attacked and injured the old bear. The guides tied the bear to a tree and called for the President. Here was a bear for him to shoot! President Roosevelt looked at the poor old bear and said "no!" No one would shoot this old bear for sport. That would not be right. However, the bear was injured and suffering. President Roosevelt ordered that the bear be put down to end its pain. Michtom took two stuffed toy bears which his wife had made and put them in his shop window. He had an idea. Mr. Michtom asked for permission from President Theodore Roosevelt to call these toy bears "Teddy's bears". This store eventually became the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company.
